A first look at Injustice: Gods Among Us

NetherRealm Studios recently revealed a new fighting game, titled Injustice: Gods Among Us, featuring characters from DC Comics franchises. This is the second fighting game produced by NetherRealm featuring DC Comics characters, the first being Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. Six characters (Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Harley Quinn, and Solomon Grundy) have been announced so far, with promotional art suggesting future announcements for more characters. The game has been featured in E3, where spectators can view gameplay footage of the characters brawling.

According to the presenters from NetherRealm, Injustice was built from an upgraded Mortal Kombat 9 engine. Gameplay footage even demonstrates similar over-the-top violence from the Mortal Kombat series, although the blood has been significantly toned down. Each character has a unique set of moves, including a combo meter that fills up and leads to an extravagant attack against the enemy. The attack sequences in the game are given a cinematic feel, as the flow of the characters’ attacks resemble the action sequences of a superhero movie.

A major feature of Injustice is the immense amount of interaction with the environment the characters can implement in their battles. The aim of the developers is to make stage selection just as important as character selection. Each arena contains a large number of unique items and backgrounds which are implemented into the battle. For example, the Batcave stage contains various gadgets, including teleports that allow for more complicated fights as well as the Batmobile, which can shoot missiles at the enemy upon the pressing of a red button on stage. The arena can even expand to allow players to fight with different backgrounds through a powerful attack from one fighter against another. Such an attack leads to a cinematic sequence of the player flying through buildings and rooms until reaching a new area. The battle continues with switching areas and using the arena’s surroundings until a victor emerges.

Injustice: Gods Among Us is slated to be released in 2013 on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii U.
