Graphics problem: "stretched" Sims

I recently reinstalled the Sims 2 and University on my laptop and have encountered a problem I never had before: Sims (and possibly objects, though I can't tell for sure) are appearing stretched: exceedingly tall and skinny. I meet all the recommended system requirements and have tried reinstalling my graphics drivers (though I'd be willing to do so again or switch drivers if recommended). Any ideas?

FWIW, I've tried using Body Shop and it doesn't seem to have any problems, it's when I take the Sims into the main game that they appear cropped to be skinny. It seems like it could be a resolution problem, but I don't know how to fix it.
