View Full Version : How many items are in your Downloads folder?

I've been downloading alot recently, and I made the mistake of revisiting the thread where people put down their favorite sites.
So I highlighted everything in my Downloads folder to see just how much I had. I don't know if it's the average number or if mine is lower than most people's (which I'm sure it is) but now I think it's starting to slow my game down a bit, so no more downloads!...for now.
I have 694 items. I have no clue how much space that is, I don't know how to check. There are some I want to delete but I have no clue which files they are!

6,900 items in 98 sub folders totalling 1.91 gigabytes.
The number of downloads doesn't slow down your games performance in normal Live Mode. They will, however slow down the loading time. They also affect the performance of Body Shop, CAS and catalog modes because the game has to access the downloads folder to bring up all the relevant choices. This can cause long lags while stuff is swapped around between hard disc and RAM.
NOTE. A lot of items (Maxis or CC) can slow the game down if you pack out a house with a very large amount of furnishing and garden objects. The more there is on the lot (sims and objects) the memory is used up and the poorer the performance. If you start with a blisteringly fast machine a small drop in performance will not be a problem, but people whose machines are bare minimum will struggle.
Good thread FFL!!! Let's see what everyone else has! :D
Shall we add a poll, do you think?

I used to have over 5GB in my downloads folder but after I had problems I forgot to back it up and had to start downloading all over again. I now have 1.77GB, 5,360 files in 42 sub folders. It makes it a lot faster to start up now though :D

5,804, at 1.58 GB.
Heh. Mirelly's got me beat. Glad to not be the champ, here.
i just have 1 :o
i use to have some more but when i open the game there was a message alerting me to desactivate the objects i've downloaded , so i just give up of having new stuff for my sims... now i'm starting to make my own floors and walls and someday i will try to do some clothes too, when i get more practise using photoshop :p

That message comes up for everyone, I just ignore it and play with my scary downloads anyway. ;)
Its basically just Maxis saying its not their fault if your game won't work.

What can I say, I'm just a download addict. :o

Oh, I feel a bit remedial...I only have 342 items taking up 85.3MB of space! But then, after the GBFBVFS incedent, I have been a bit leery of adding back a lot of custom content...

LOL in a way--yes. It seemed like a big number to me, because I hadn't downloaded that much stuff before. But now you guys are making me feel like I can allow myself to download thousands of more items :p
I have a question though. What do you mean by subfolders? Do you just make a folders inside the Downloads folder? That might make me feel better, thinking "Oh I have 3 subfolders" rather than "I have 694 items" even if I'm on the lower end of the spectrum.

Exactly. Within my download folder I have folders for hair, makeup, clothes, objects, hacks, walls, floors, and more folders for hacks that are made by certain people I like so I don't get them confused. It is an easier way to sort it out if ever need be.
Don't put folders within folders though, those won't show up.

Just a word of caution. Earlier versions of the game did not support sub-folders for custom meshes. I can't recall off-hand when this support came in but if you put a mesh file in a sub-folder and can't find it in the game then that's your problem ... put it back in the root downloads folder :)
NB Good CC artists add the word MESH to the filename of mesh files. Some buggers don't bother and this is a dadratted nuisance and devoutly to be deprecated. :(

My Downloads folder has 5,459 files, 82 folders. 1.88 GB.
And I used to worry. :o Quite a few of you have me beat.
My downloads tend to follow a costume and weirdo theme, though. Whenever I want to dress my sims in something ordinary, I find that I don't have much to choose from.
Hugz, I am SO in awe. I think my computer is pretty good, but I don't think it could handle your Download file. :D
Ok lets see here, uh *cough* twelve. Yeah laugh, dial-up does not support downloads. I've got Mirelly's glasses in here, and a few xmsims hair. *cough*

I've got dialup. That hasn't stopped me. :p
No way, Lynet. With all your freaky skins and medieval stuff you still have fewer downloads than me? How embarrassing. I have got to kick my clothing habit, obviously.
And this is after deleting more than half of my object downloads. I love the stuff with Seasons and no longer feel the need to keep a lot of my downloads. I think it's time to clean out my walls. I have more than a hundred downloaded walls by various artists ...
Oooh, fuzzy ferret, I feel like a pusher! Come on, just a few thousand more, it won't hurt you ... I will warn you, my game takes a full five minutes to load and my machine sorta rocks.
Especially now that it's dust free. :o

After another sesh today I've gone up to 7,243 in 95 folders (I did a bit of compacting ;) ) - and that totals to 2.04 gig :(

I feel so disorganised. :p All my downloads are dumped in the same place - no subfolders. And I'm not about to start now either lol. However, I do keep a backup of each set of downloads installed on the same day - I have sub folders in my backup folder, each one titled with the date they were ADDED TO the game, so if i get a bad set, I can see which ones to remove.

I have subfolders for the basics, i.e., Clothes, Hair, Makeup, Accessories, Walls, Floors, ?? I think that's it. All else is just plopped in the downloads folder. Once a week or so I go through it with Clean Installer to see what I have, and since I've installed Seasons, when I'm remodelling a home, if I see something I don't use, I delete it as well. Trying to clean things up a bit.

9.15gb as of this morning. And that's *after* I did some major culling while I was getting ready for Seasons. (It was 8.something before Seasons.)
That's 41,620 files in 100 folders.
It can take over 30 minutes for my game to load because of the high number. But I get frustrated that I can't use that perfect (fill in the blank) if I take more out. I need to somehow find a way of getting fewer downloads without that frustration of missing something!

1285 currently, no idea how large..... I've thrown out bigger download files 4 or 5 times. oh! don't leave a copied download file on your desktop. slows down the whole computer. and upsets significant others.

just some 1700 files in 40 or so folders, totalling ~1GB
once in a while i go through it and kick everything I just downloaded but never used..(like some 50 Skin files I deleted the other day...each sim needs only 1 and never changes them (in my game at least ;)
If my game would take 30 minutes to start, I would just get some Dynamite and blow the whole thing up *LOL* Try to sort it out a little...do you really need 25 different Bathtubs and 500+ Everyday-Clothes in the game???
Create some "packages" and switch them once in a while.
I actually try to find a way to save a complete hood incl. every Item that actually is used...and then delete all downloads and restore the hood...to get rid of all these unused files

Update time:
Fess up folks. Who's read this and thought, hey. I think I'll download a few more bits and pieces.
Repost your revised figures (or join in) and also measure your loading times.
I'll kick off. I'm up to 2.12GB: 7,436 files in 101 folder.
Loading time (from clicking desktop shortcut to appearance of neighborhood chooser) ...
5 min 40 secs ... I was surprised. It seemed a lot longer

Im not sure how many d/l's I have but loading is taking longer these days and frustrates me. I only have 2 folders and everything else goes into downloads so it's all a mess.
If I want to start from scrathc to get myself more organized, can I just completely delete everything from my downloads folder and start over? Will that delete them out of my games?
So if I have sims living in a house that I downloaded and I delete it, what will happen to the sims?
Please help... im confused!

Uh, yeah. If there downloads folder is emptied the game won't be able to show them.
However, remember that when you're using the catalog for making sims or furnishing homes you can alos delete custom content that you no longer want from there. Be careful not to delete items that you suspect are not recolors of Maxis made items unless you don't want that shape any more . because the game will let you delete a mesh and leave all the recolors behind  But anything you know is a recolor and you don't want it any more (and lets face it, if you have lots of recolors, scrolling by them all to get to one you want is tedious ... specially if you always scroll past 6 pages of things you never use and wonder what possessed you to download them in the first place.

Thanks. I've tried to delete hairstyles while in the body shop but they always come back. There are some that I want to delete but dont know the names of them so I dont know which d/l in my folder to delete. It gets frustrating so im at the point of just wanting to delete everything & start all over!

Haha! What you need is the Sims 2 Categorizer.
Got to http://www.simwardrobe.com/
and download the highly nifty Categorizer (in the Sims 2 >> Programs section) ... beware the site has lots of other shiny goodies. You may come away with more than you went in for

That dynamic denizen of download decency, Delphi, of ModTheSims2.com has knocked out a wee gizmo for those of us who suspect that our copious download folders have more orphans than Dr. Barnardos. Delphy's Download Organiser does what it says on the tin. Finds recolours without meshes, sorts stuff by name, by type, helps re-file into folders ... wipes your nose before it drips .... It's awesome. My download folder has shrunk by 129 orphanned recolours. I can't wait to to start up the game and enjoy the gaining of 3 seconds of playing time. (The DDO helpfully informed me that it took it 3 minutes at 40 files per second to scan my entire downloads folder ... that's about the same speed that game does it ... woo hoo!)
Get it here - DDO (http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=227925)
I understand that it will also work for American players, by subtly organizing their files instead of organising them, as it does for native speakers of the Queen's English ... :p

Hey, Christii, it's not on our website. I advertised it because we're not partisan. If you need help with it the support is over there. Look at the information on the download page I gave you link to. It's a long page with all the information you need ... there's a lot to read and look at before you ever get to the download link.
As for where to download. Never be careless in downloading. Be consistent.
Open My Documents and take a look. There should a folder called My Downloads. That's where Internet Explorer (and Firefox) both seek to save downloaded files unless you tell them otherwsie. DON'T TELL THEM OTHERWISE. One day you'll slip and click and forget what you did and never be able to find that must have download again ... that's when you discover that Windows is great at telling what you already know and not so good at telling what you need to know. You try to download it again and Windows tells you it's done it already ... (yeah, you know that) .. but don't expect it to be in a hurry to tell you what it's done with it ... it expects you to know.

I'm not going to do a search, but I doubt it equals to a lot of people around here. I'm selective on my downloads. I only download things that I must have. Yet I still had to clean out my folder a few weeks ago... this computer just can't hold enough stuff on it, I guess. It's either that or remove an EP.:(
