ive got 2 questions actually
1. can you get struck by lightning before seasons because one of the sims on my game from the families already on the game has a memory of being struck by lightning and i havent got seasons?
2. is there a way to get the maternity leave after my sims gives birth because it comes up with the message saying your sims will get a further 3 days vacation... and the carpool always comes the next day and she wont go until i call the nanny and she gets here by which time the carpools already gone and she has to drive to work.

Here's some answers for ya. :winks:
1. No you can't get struck by lightning. But some sims (the ones that maxis made from the start) have that memory anyway. Which is kind of weird.
2. The carpool will turn up but if you don't go to work, your sim will have used one of its days off and their little work-o-meter thingy won't get lower and the boss won't get angry with you.
Hope these are the right answers (I'm a bit sceptic to the first answer), correct me someone if I'm wrong. :classic:

1) You can't get struck by lightning if you don't have seasons. It's weird that the memory would be there.
If you do have seasons however, then I think you can get struck by lightning, because I'm pretty sure one of my sim women did. She was out in the backyard during a thunderstorm, tending to the garden, and I think she may have wandered a bit too close to a tree or whatever got struck. I didnt' see it happen, though there was a big lightning bolt, and I don't know how else to explain that black and grey fried hair look and the tattered clothes she staggered back in the house with. :)
2) Maternity leave is given after the sim is pregnant, but before birth, I think, technically, because there is that pop up notice about how the sim needs to stay home and get rest before the big day. After birth she is given an additional three days vacation, and like muffin-tacos said, she doesn't HAVE to take it, but if she just doesn't get in the car, it uses up a paid vacation day.
And of course, someone correct me if I'm wrong too! :)

The pre-made sims with the memory of being struck by lightning have indeed been struck by lightning.
Weather was in the game but due to bugs (and EA realized they could make money out of it) it was removed. No doubt these sims were made when lightning was still in the testing version.

Ah, thanks Vankate for putting in the bit about Seasons! I just took it for granted that Krazzy Kezzy already knew about people being able to get struck my lightning if you had Seasons. :knockout:

Actually, that's not completely true. With OFB, if you make an evil kite, you can get electrocuted by flying it. That would be like being struck by lightening, don't you think?

Good point, Meg! But since I don't have OFB, the thought never came to mind.:nervous:

1) lightning/storm coexist with the season of spring. therefore, you cannot get struck if there's no season for spring to start with!!
-my sim had gotten struck by a lightning (happens randomly, i guess) and her hair was all burned off, her face was all black and it was quite hysterical.
2)hmm.... i have a currently pregnent sim. dunno about this question yet... i'll come back and tell you when i find out. :D

All I know is, I think if you fly a kite and it electrocutes you, then it is most definitely evil! :D

While we're on the topic of lightning...
(Sorry, this is a tad off-topic but I didn't want to
start a whole new thread for it...)
I forgot to buy my family a telephone, & then the tree out back
behind our house was set on fire by a lightning bolt. Buy & Build mode
were unclickable, so I figured I was in trouble...but then they became
clickable again so I bought a phone & called the Fire Station.
Well, by the time the fireman got there, the fire had ceased & I was
fined for "calling when there was no emergency."
So, my question is...does a fire caused by lightning always stop on
its own, or was I just lucky?
muffin-tacos
05-17-2007, 01:39 AM
I once had half the trees in my garden burn down! :wideeyed: But that fire wasn't started by lightning. I had placed a grill so nicely by a tree and what do you know? The grill burst into fire and it spread to a few trees. But they were quite close to each other.
So really, I can't answer your question for ya. Was your tree standing on its own or by lots of other stuff? If it was on its own, then I don't think there was much risk of the fire spreading.

Polls should always be funny. Political elections would be much better if the ballot papers had a bit of comedy in them. People would go to vote just for the giggle.

I looked up both words in Dictionary.com (which I love and have bookmarked, mainly because of the Thesaurus) and because of this extensive research I'm sitting fair and square on the fence. :D
In this particular instance, both spellings are relevant, sort of.

Lightning Lightning Lightning. Thats how you spell it.:D
I nearly got struck by Lightning. It hit a power box 50 feet from where I was standing. I felt a shock throughout my body, and it scarred my retina.
I have a little white spot in my vision that will never go away. And now I'm petrified of Lightning. I always go inside during thunder storms.

But lightening is a term used to describe a change in the body toward the end of pregnancy. Therefore, since the original question concerned both the thunderstorm static and maternity, I decided to sit on the fence.
p.s. Glad you survived the lightning, Moon.

Wow, Moony, that's so cool! After that I don't blame you for not wanting to be outside when it's storming! But then again, I think very few people do. Apart from those nutters that think "oh look a storm! Lets go outside with an umbrella and try to get struck by lighning!" - of course.

I'm with odin. I was unlocking a steel gate with spikes on the top during a thunderstorm (to get my car out to go to work. Nothing else would have driven me out in that!) Suddenly I felt my hair prickling, like it was trying to take off under my hood. I got in the car right quick, and drove away like a bat out of hell. When I got home a tree less than 50 yards away bore new, livid burn scar down its trunk. Guess the lightning didn't like my gate after all, but I'm staying indoors from now on.

Scary story you got there, Mirelly! I would have probably died of fright if that happened to me! Seriously. How scary coming back home when there's a tree with a burn scar down its trunk because of the lightning! :scared:
I know! Lets all share scary lightning stories! *sets up a campfire* Gather round the fire my friends but watch out for the lightning!

Like Mirelly. The tree next to the power box got fried. However there was no flame. Just a black tree. I also got a mild case of sunburn. Just before it happened everything went silent. So I stopped walking.I started to feel like something was going to happen. Had I kept walking the direction I was going, I may have been hit. All the air conditioners in the local shops got blown out. And the power was cut to the whole suburb.
Its also dangerous to have showers or baths during lightning, or even doing the dishes. So I just turn everything off. and sit in the lounge room until its over.

Just wanted to say that I've had storms during both Summer and Autumn, so Spring isn't the only season to experience storms and lightning. I never would have thought about it really except while I was playing my latest Sim (well, actually she's old...she's Circe Beaker, but I haven't played her in ages) there was the biggest storm I've ever seen in the game and there was HEAPS of lightning...and this was in the middle of Summer. I'm still amazed at how loud the thunder claps were. :D:D It was wonderful.

hence, "well I was playing my favorite sim, Circe Beaker,"
Technically since she said playing my favorite sim, that can mean one of 2 things.
1. She was acting in a play, and was assuming the role of her favorite sim, Circe Beaker.
2. Now, this one's a tad bit more logical, she also couldve been playing this game called "The Sims 2" and was controlling one of the inhabitants of the game, formerly called "Circe Beaker"
Now, im, not positive on which one she meant, the former or the latter, as they are both completely logical and should be handled with tender care while reading.

So, my question is...does a fire caused by lightning always stop on

Pardon the lateness in this reply, but I didn't notice an answer to it, so I figure I'd tell you that the lightning bolts can randomly strike at things in the yard (like trees) and set fire to them. The buy and build modes are disabled just like in emergencies, such as a robber.
But, usually, these instances happen during thunderstorms, and the rain automatically puts out the fire for you, hence the buy and build modes coming back and ending the crisis. If this happens, you don't need the firemen, or they just get irritated that there is no fire.
However, only once in game I did actually have a lightning hit RIGHT at the end of a storm, and the rain stopped, but my tree kept burning! Luckily it was far enough from the house, and it just burned on grass. It also had a weird period where it looked like it went out, and my buy mode came back, and then it restarted, but the buy mode stayed in tact, so I called the nice firemen and they came running.
:D

It was in the game. I put one of those lightning sticks in the yard, because she had quite a few trees and I'd heard they can get struck by lightning, and it was wonderful to see it get hit over and over again. :D I'm looking forward to more storms in the game now. I've never seen one that big...I hope there are more.

Easy way to fix that is desensitization. Just buy a storm CD from a new age store (or I'm sure music stores have them too) and play it every day for a short period of time. Start at low volume and gradually, over a period of weeks, turn the volume up and keep it running longer.
While you're doing this make sure everyone in the house is acting normal and happy. Do NOT comfort the dog, dogs don't understand 'comfort' they see it as praise...like you're saying to him "Yes, you should be afraid, good boy". The more you play the CD and ignore him, while acting happy and comfortable and normal. The less frightened he'll be. Reward him when he relaxes by paying attention to him, but ignore him again if he starts to whine and be afraid. :) It takes time and patience, but you can help him.
Sorry to hijack the thread. I'm a mad obsessed dog person. I can't help myself. :o

LOL your dog is smart.:)
If you are swimming in a lightning storm I wish you luck. Water is a good conductor for Electricity. The lightning can hit the water. But if you are swimming, you are the highest object. So its more likely to hit you. In Australia, lots of people get hit. Maybe its because we have a pretty flat country. lol. I dont tempt fate. lol:D

I agree with Odin. It's extremely dangerous to be around water when there is a thunderstorm.
It has nothing to do with being frightened of the noise and the storm. It's just common sense. Your dog is a smart pooch to hide.

You swim when it's lightning?? If your pool has metal sides...well, I'll just say I'd rather not drown in my pool. Lightning can strike from miles away, so you don't really know "when it gets closer". Well, you KNOW, you can see it, but that doesn't mean that if it's far away it won't hit. I always get out at the first signs of lightning, even if it's farther away. I'd rather live...
Our dog gets nervous during storms. I'll have to try that....

It's always worth the time and effort. Imagine if you were terrified beyond belief when there was a storm around. Much better to take the time to help your dog out of the fear than just let him be scared to death when ever there's a storm. Dogs are worth the time it takes to train them. ;)
Ok...I'll shut up now and go back to trying to get my Sims struck by lightning. ;)
