It has been identified that some of the issues being reported on the BBS, namely the frozen sims, are due to user created game patches. Maxis does not officially support user created content, such as skins and objects, because it would be impossible for us to test it all, but we do try to test some of it, and we do make changes to support user created content, because being able to play with, and create your own things in the Sim world is what the Sims is all about. We specifically design our game so that its innerworkings are visible, and so that anyone can design and create their own skins and objects. It is unfortunate when there are sections of user created content that do not exactly conform to established formats, so that when we design a new expansion pack the skins do not appear, or they crash a game, but we try to be as diligent as we can to ensure that this happens to as few things as possible.

But you should NOT download a user created file that claims to patch your game, and the way the game runs, and then expect your game to work with new expansion packs. These pathches use files that replace our game files, and then cannot be updated by newer versions of our game, like superstar, to include the new functionality of the expansion pack. Maxis does NOT and will not support user created patches. The only supported patches are listed on thesims.com.
