SimCity v5.0 - City or Culture?
A flurry of excitement sprung up from the SimCity community yesterday as word got around that a new SimCity title was going to be finally unveiled. As more details slowly emerged, it became clear: "This isn't your father's SimCity".
Some of the first details to be unveiled and surprised everyone was that working title, SimCity "Societies", is not being lead by Maxis or internally within Electronic Arts. Instead, the title is being spearheaded by Tilted Mill Entertainment. Some of you may know Tilted Media, but for those unfamilar with Tilted Mill, they've lead the development towards Caesar IV.
Details are still rather sketchy, but in a post (http://www.tiltedmill.com/forums/showpost.php?p=157643&postcount=22)on the Tilted Mill Forums by President and Director of Development, Chris Beatrice, suggests the title is going a different direction than the traditional SimCities of the past. It appears SimCity is taking a step away from being the "classic realistic urban simulator".
If the title is any indication of the direction this version of SimCity is heading, it appears to be heading towards a social oriented concept following the progressive life of a particular character. In essence, it seems to be following the path of an earlier title released, "City Life" and an earlier project developed by Maxis, entitled "Simsville". However there has been no official sources or information to validate this theory.
Various threads has popped up around the net, including leading SimCity fansite SimTropolis (http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/categories.cfm?catid=367&entercat=y), and Tilted Mill (http://www.tiltedmill.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13032), expressing a myriad of emotions, including anger, concern, and shock.
Though the title seems to be early in development, all indications is that Tilted Media is excited to be working on the his historic series and it's fanbase.
Only time will tell what will become of this series. Several questions remain, including what is SimCity Societies and what can be expected. Will fans embrace it? Or has EA destroyed a franchise and alienated its entire fanbase? Will SimCity societies become a smash hit and join the ranks of history
But one thing is for certain. We'll be keeping an open mind on this title.
