View Full Version : So What is Spore Anyway?

Mr.Heat
03-28-2005, 11:55 AM
Spore is the next game from Will Wright/Maxis, probably best known for being the makers of Sim City and The Sims. Spore takes elements from many of Maxis' previous games such as Sim Earth, Sim Life and Sim City and blends them into a simulation that allows the player to influence the development of a life form from a single-cellular stage, through multi-cellular life in the oceans and on land, to the development of sentiency, tool-use, and eventually interplanetary and interstellar flight. All of the information we have about the game at the moment is from the talk/demonstration "The Future of Content" given by Will Wright at the Gaming Developer's Conference.

Have a nice simming..errr..sporing!

I heard that the game will be very reliant upon downloading things and using 3rd party programs. Is this true? (I hate downloading unknown stuff just to enjoy a game! :( )

Mr.Heat

I don't think that the game will cause anybody problems, since everytime you'll login to the EA server, it will poll out your creatures automatically, so theyr'e shared anyway, and people who will download stuff from the EA server (which will probably be the biggest source), won't have any problems

Wrong Boines, you don't have to deal with those super creatures, cause you don't have to download them so early in the game...And diplomacy is always a good way... ;)

Erm, you guys act like you'll be choosing what you download and downloading from a website. This isn't the case, from what I've heard. The game chooses what would be best to fit into your universe, and downloads it for you, invisibly. You don't have to do anything yourself except play the game. Custom content will be integrated automatically.

Yes it does, reading back into some of Will Wrights past interviews and such, he talks about his "upcoming game" and how much he's been pushing for completely transparent connections between users. There will be no selective downloading, unless he makes a last minute decision to change that, but I think it's better that way. If you allow selective downloading the people will pick the same few races every time, this will have the game select it for them, and the game will be different every time. People will get bored slower.

Mr.Heat
03-31-2005, 07:10 AM
Selective downloading is a possibilty in the game, it is inculded as a featured option as i know....you may be right though

That does sound interesting.

I think it would be quite good to include selective downloading, as well as the automatic one (Which I have doubts about) because you may see somebody else's game, and they have something in it that you really want, but your game doesn't download it. Whoa, I could understand how agitating that must be..

Although, yea, if there is no selective downloading it'd be quite exciting so see what you get each time.

Mr.Heat
03-31-2005, 07:18 AM

And that obvously, what Will Wright doesn't want you to feel....that's why it's logical to have selective downloading...

Heat

03-31-2005, 06:18 PM
And who's to say that if you see something cool in their game that something equally cool won't be in your game? The whole point is exploration. Besides that, if you selectively downloaded a race, where would you find it? It would still take a long time to find it. The entire point of spore is custom content self proliferating, and if any of that content could get "popular" then everybody's game would have this particular race, and eventually there would be a "list" of the coolest and best races to have, and everybody's game would end up the same. The exploration, the surprise, would end. You know it would happen too. With the game shuffling it up a bit every time you play, there's always the chance you find a certain race of sentient sixteen legged sausage monkeys. When everybody has their universe filled with various pokemon every time they play, that won't happen.

Mr.Heat
04-01-2005, 02:16 AM
Hello...errmm...guest...

You have a really good point there, But don't you think people like what's called "popular"? i think that's the reason Will Wright may include that feature of selective downloading....

Heat

04-01-2005, 06:15 AM
Nah, I think if Will Wright conformed to what was "popular" SimCity and The Sims wouldn't exist. If he gave in to the lowest common denominator, he'd be making another FPS with no gameplay and good graphics. Will Wright will do what Will Wright wants to do, and that is why he's such a good game designer. He breaks so many rules and jumps so far out of conformity that it surprises people, usually in a good way.

I never said Will Wright is Conformed to what's popular, but i know he would like his game to sell, and that feature is some kind of a key feature in the game....i still bielive it will be included after all

With such a small "footprint" for each object, maybe everyone's game would get a copy of every object and creature, and we'd simply have the option to use it or not? Maybe even to sort by our own preferences?

Personally, I'm going to try to make the most unusual stuff possible, test the very limits of the game's creative possibilities. Then again, that might annoy some.

I think that it will be good to have the non-selective picks, because what if that one creature is cool, but it works out horribly in the ecosystems? If this sort of creature was real,it would go extinct. Yeah,it's cool. But if it was left in,it would die,so spore just dosen't let it in in the first place!

Ok, First of all, proper grammar dictates that you use a SPACE after a comma, IE:

Not like this,alright?

And second, I was not referring to you mentioning death, what I was referring to was you resurrecting a thread that has been dead for two months.

Hey, would this include customized skins, creatures, objects/buildings, etc.? Or do you think there will be a way for the players to choose to download or upload specific custom things that they can use in their own culture(s)?

Actually, now I wonder if we will even be able to create our own custom skins/textures, and much, much more -- or if everything will be able to be customized anyway in the game itself?

K.Kraden

Everything is uploaded.

More or less, Spore will ship as the naked engine, with only a little bit of content to start the community; all the content will be created either by players, or will be randomly compiled by the computer in real time.

Like all my statements, I must warn that since I am not a Maxoid or Will Wright himself, what I say has a moderate chance of being innacurate.

OK, so based on that, what would happen if you don't have Internet connection during gameplay? Could you still download custom stuff?

Does Spore require the Internet in order to play it?

Astrodog

No, the game is already preloaded with plenty of creatures, buildings, etc. etc. etc.

K.Kraden
09-05-2005, 07:35 PM
When I say 'little bit of content' I am talking relatively. You will start out with prebuilt creatures, buildings, vehicles, and plants in the thousands, but when compared to what the Spore community will create, this number is very very tiny.

I also heard that Maxis might create content packs that has a whole bunch of made creatures in a nice tidy little file, in case you can get onto the internet via a public terminal or something.

Also, considering the content is compressed -EXTREMELY- small ( 1MB can hold roughly 1,000 items), even if you're running on a 56k or even a 28.8 or lower (ancient, I know, but it still exists), you can still get plenty of creatures downloaded quickly and easily.
