View Full Version : The Sims 2 System Requirements

ManagerJosh

A lot of questions have been going on about the system requirements needed to run The Sims 2.

At this point, let me say THESE ARE THE OFFICIAL SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS.

System Requirements:
If you have a T&L capable video card with at least 32 MB of video RAM then you need at least:

800 MHz processor or better
256 MB RAM if Windows XP, Windows ME, Windows 98 or Windows 2000
At least 3.5 GB of hard drive space
If you have a non-T&L capable video card (an Intel Extreme Graphics or a Radeon 7000/VE Series) then you need at least:

2.0 GHz processor or better
256 MB RAM if Windows XP, Windows ME, Windows 98, or Windows 2000
At least 3.5 GB of hard drive space
Get the most current driver for your video card. The manufacturers usually have the video drivers on their sites for you to download. Visit the nVidia (http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp) site, the ATI (http://www.ati.com/support/driver.html) site or the support site for your computer's manufacturer for the latest drivers for those video cards.

Supported video cards (and the more video memory the better):

ATI RadeonTM series (7000 or better)

Radeon 7000/VE series (non-T&L; requires 2.0 GHz processor)
7200, 7500
8500, All-In-Wonder 8500
9000, 9200, 9500, 9600, 9700, 9800
X300, X600, X800

NvidiaŽ QuadroTM series

Quadro, Quadro2, Quadro4

NvidiaŽ Geforce series (GeForce2 and better)

GeForce2
GeForce3, 3 Ti
GeForce4, 4Ti, MX 420, 440
GeForce FX 5200, 5600, 5700, 5800, 5900, 5950
GeForce 6600, 6800

IntelŽ Extreme Graphics (non-T&L; requires 2.0 GHz processor)

82845, 82865, 82915

From the nVidia (http://www.nvidia.com/) website's glossary
Transform & Lighting (T&L) definition: Two separate engines on the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) that provide for a powerful, balanced PC platform and enable extremely high polygon count scenes. Transform performance determines how complex objects can be and how many can appear in a scene without sacrificing frame rate. Lighting techniques add to a scene's realism by changing the appearance of objects based on light sources.

Some other notes about video cards:
T&L video cards started shipping around 4 years ago, so if you got your computer in the last couple of years you should check and see if you have a T&L card.

Note they are subject to change at any time.

Wow, those would have to be sheer minimum at least. My advice is, even if you hear official recommended specs, go just that bit further to be safe.

Thank you ManagerJosh for the requirements. However Will Wright said in an interview "You cant have a computer that wont run the game" Though I am going to delete the original Sim games so it will run. (sorry if I saod it to casually, Im new and dont want to get on the wrong side of things)

ManagerJosh
07-26-2003, 08:43 PM
nah no worries crazy :) But remember those specs aren't official so we don't know what Will Wright is setting the specs to be :)

i also read that interview with Will Wright, and from what i read in that, the first specs seemed a litte more realistic compared to the second.

that would be a smart idea. If someone where to not know about the requirments and preordered then they could get pretty upset and/or mad for maxis not telling them before hand so they culd prepare!

mattho
07-30-2003, 11:14 PM
I doubt it... I think there are heaps of people looking forward to it - accentuated by the fact that it's the last expansion for the Sims, and all.

FinalFantasy4ever
07-30-2003, 11:23 PM
Yeah but there isnt very much in it thats great and many people such as my self already wasted abuncha money on buyin all the ohter expansions and feel thats its a waste. Specially since it was announced after TS2

mattho
07-31-2003, 12:04 AM
I don't know, I'm not sure why Sims2 would need to have an effect on the expansions of the original Sims. Sure, we know that Sims2 is coming out, but there's no reason NOT to buy MM.

FinalFantasy4ever
07-31-2003, 12:07 AM
Many people when TS2 come out will stop playin TSO and the exps. So for many people they are buying a game that will get little use.

mattho
07-31-2003, 12:09 AM
Well... I'm sure that all boils down to what people want to play. I mean, I have Simcity4 but I will always love playing Simcity3000 - I might even play it more than its sequel.

FinalFantasy4ever
07-31-2003, 12:10 AM
Hmm yeah guess your right it really just depends on the person

I agree with what some one else said.. josh's first possible system requirements are more plausable than the second ones. I do remember Will Wright frequently saying that he wants the game to be available to most or all people, without them having to get major upgrades. so i say some where around

500mhz processor or more (1.2ghz recomended)
128-256 megs (mg) of ram or more (512 recomended)
8mg 3d video card (32mg recomended)
1 gb harddrive space (plus extra for saved games)

as for what this got off topic on to.. i never got another expansion past vacation.. and i dont plan on getting a nother one, unless its given to me.

simsamgrl16
08-07-2003, 06:11 AM
yea me 2

lilfaeriegirl078
08-07-2003, 09:21 AM
well i read in interview with willl wright at boomtown, and he said almost every computer out there right now will be able to run it. thats means like if we got the sims 2 today, it would run on almost all of our comps. just not old ones

simsamgrl16
08-07-2003, 09:23 AM
yup hope so thas so kool

I hope my computer can run Sims2. I'll be so upset if it can't! I only got it at the end of last year as a twenty first present and I can't afford to get another one already. I'll be gutted. I am soooooooo looking forwards to the game. I have no idea what my computer has. I know hardly anything about it. I mostly got it to play the sims online on but I can't play that anymore.

Go back and read the first of this thread, ManagerJosh covers the requirements pretty well....

katrina
09-04-2003, 12:22 AM
But how do I know what my computer has?

FaeLuna
09-04-2003, 10:58 AM
You might be able to find out by right-clicking the icon that says "my computer" and then select "properties" and see if that tells you what you need to know. I mostly know what my computer has because it's all listed on the recipt from when we had it built. :p

katrina
09-04-2003, 03:08 PM
Thanks. I tried that and it said I have 192 MB of Ram. I'll need more won't I? How do I get new Ram?

FaeLuna
09-04-2003, 06:46 PM
To get new RAM you would need to go to a computer store that sells RAM, and you might need their help to figure out what kind of RAM you need to get. They will have different sizes of RAM for you to pick out your new RAM from. Sometimes they'll have to take out all the old RAM but sometimes there is room for them to just ADD the new RAM and then it really goes up because it is the TWO RAM chips together.

ManagerJosh
09-04-2003, 07:47 PM
see www.topmicrousa.com for RAM :D

We have some of the best deals around :)

katrina
09-05-2003, 03:17 AM
thanks guys. i think i will probably need to look into getting more a bit closer to when sims2 comes out. if i uninstalled sims would that give me more ram for sims 2?

FaeLuna
09-05-2003, 11:39 AM
No, uninstalling stuff won't give you more RAM, think of your computer memory being like a puzzle, and RAM is like the size of the puzzle pieces that can be moved around. RAM stands for Random Access Memory, it is the size of a chunk of your memory your computer can deal with all at once. Your memory for STORING stuff is what gets cleared up when you uninstall programs, not your RAM which is memory for MOVING stuff. I hope this makes some sense. :)

simsamgrl16
09-07-2003, 09:33 AM
i'll never understand this stuff lol

Maxis has a survey thing up to see what type of systems we have for sims2

katrina
09-09-2003, 04:52 PM
It wouldn't let me take it

FaeLuna
09-10-2003, 10:12 AM
Where did you find their survey? Can you post a link to it? :)

katrina
09-11-2003, 02:47 PM
at the official website. I'm not sure of the link. But if you go to www.thesims.com there is a link there to the offical website.

ManagerJosh
09-11-2003, 09:53 PM
After much anticpation, Maxis was gracious enough to release some preliminary system requirements for The Sims 2. As of September 12, 2003, these are the requirements for your computer. Please note they are subject to change at any time.

System Requirements
-128MB of RAM for Windows 98, 2000, or ME (256MB of RAM For Windows XP)
-Graphics: GeForce or Radeon Series or Better
-CPU: 600MHz (if you have one of the video cards above). Those who have less powerful cards will need a more powerful CPU.
-Those who do not have a powerful video card, or a lower end model, you will most likely need a 1.5GHz processor.
-Monitor Resolution: 800x600 (Lower performance machines are advised to run in lower resolution as usual.)

Currently there are two teams at Maxis working on improving performance while reducing the amount of processing required.

Keep in touch here at WorldSims as more details are being released. We'll release them as soon as we receive it and clear it with Maxis.

FaeLuna
09-12-2003, 09:07 AM
How would I go about finding out if my graphics card is considered "or better" than the GeForce or Radeon Series ones? :p I'm guessing it's probably not... but I'd like to know if I could find out. :D

ManagerJosh
09-12-2003, 09:15 AM
Start > run > dxdiag :D

Post what you have here :)

FaeLuna
09-12-2003, 09:23 AM
ok I did that. :D Under the date and computer name it says all this:

Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600)
Language: English (Regional Setting:English)
System Manufacturer: INTELR
System Model: AWRDACPI
BIOS: Phoenix-AwardBIOS v6.00PG
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz
Memory: 512MB RAM
Page file: 344 MB used, 894MB available
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0 (4.09.0000.0900)

I wish it had let me copy and paste it instead of writing it all down in notepad! :p So there might be a typo, but that's about it. Now what does it all MEAN? :p

heehee don't worry simsamgrl all that wasn't my siggy! I was posting all the technical stuff I didn't understand from running the program like Josh said to. You can see my siggy down UNDER all that, it's just FaeLuna. If I had all that technical stuff as a siggy my posts would always seem HUGE haha!

I'm an old bird new to gaming. Never played a game that held my interest more than the briefest of times... until The Sims hooked me.
My question: has there been any talk of a Mac version of Sims 2?
And I'm assuming that user made objects will not be able to run in Sims 2, is that right?

How are we supposed to know or find out if we have the requiremnets for The Sims 2?

Vchat20
12-22-2003, 09:01 AM
first off, YOUR best bet would be to go to www.simprograms.com or .net or something. they have a download to check if you meet the requirements. those of us who actually have the knowledge can easily peek around the computer and find out.

Ok-would this work with the sims 2?:
CPU: Pentium 2.4GHz
Operating System: Windows 98* 4.10.2222 A
Default Language: English
DirectX* Version: 9.0
Physical Memory: 247 MB
Min. Graphics Memory: 8 MB
Max. Graphics Memory: 64 MB
Graphics Memory in use: 29 MB
(Intel 845G/865G graphics memory is dynamically allocated-can be upto 64mb)
Processor: x86
Processor Speed: 2413 MHZ
Vendor ID: 0x8086
Device ID: 0x2562
Device Revision: 1
Accelerator In Use: Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller
Video BIOS: 2686
Current Graphics Mode: 800 by 600 High Color

Other information:
Non T&L capable, supports Intel's zone rendering technology
Intel 845G/865G graphics memory is dyanamically allocated-http://developer.intel.com/design/graphics/dvmt.htm explains the DVMT technology.
Driver version: PV13.6

The system requirements page at The Sims 2 websites mentions Intel integrated graphics:
'If you have a non-T&L capable video card (such as TNT2 or Intel Integrated for example) then you need at least:
1.5 GHz processor
256 MB RAM if Windows XP, Windows ME, or Windows 2000
128 MB RAM if Windows 98 '

yours looks like it would work, but the graphics card would become a problem.

umm. no. look at his graphics card. i have the same exact one and games like halo and bf1942 i have major trouble running. pretty much the only thing different from his list is ive got a 2GHZ celeron. hell wanna try to upgrade the video card. and most likely hell ned a pci video card since most pc's that ave intel's have no agp slot.

TaiGuy
01-23-2004, 03:54 PM
well, he'll obviously be playing with software rendering.
he does have a 2.4 Ghz processor, minimum for software rendering is 1.5
however, his image quality might not be as nice as hardware rendering image quality. but i'm sure his FPS will be fine...

Josh said:
"Currently there are two teams at Maxis working on improving performance while reducing the amount of processing required."

where did you get that information from?

Vchat20
01-23-2004, 10:39 PM
im pretty sure its valid information. Josh always seems to get very valid info from maxis. and, no he wont be running with software rendering, it will be hardware rendering, but it will not be using the T&L as stated on the system requirements for ts2. it would probabaly run fine, but he would be better off and would like it better in the end if he got a new vid card. im probably gonna get one myself before ts2 is released.

Yes-The Intel 865G will run The Sims 2-as it's 64mb and the CPU compnesates for the lack of T&L. The 845/865G can run many games that need T&L .

To decide what kind of graphic/video card to get, go shopping with this graph so you can get the best card for the best buy. http://www.snootysims.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=753

Also, you might want to wait until September to buy it. The prices should go lower for the currently available stuff since there's so much new coming out. I suspect that the prices (except for RAM which is in high demand) will allow you to buy more than you could get if you bought now.

Don't worry it should still run it. Although if anyone has 256MBs of RAM with Windows XP I would be shocked. (Leave if you don't want to read the end of my boring post. :p  ) I was running XP with 256MBs of RAM and was shocked at how bad the performance was. Although with 1GB of RAM if works nicely. :D

You meet or exceed all the minimum specifications and your card (while not the best on the market) is one of the supported ones. You should do fine.

It's really hard to say whether something will "look good" until the game actually has been played on the specs. As long as it will run, your best bet is to see how *you* like it when you play the game.

If you think your graphics aren't good enough, then and only then go and get a better card. But if you do, aim for getting something like a Radeon 9800Pro or better or a Geforce FX 5900 or 6800. No use getting something that is only minimally better than what you have.

You didn't list your harddrve space (which isn't in the dxdiag, unfortunately.) You can find that by opening My Computer, right clicking on your harddrive, and selecting properties. The total space isn't as important as your unused space. You'll need 3.5gb (yes, GB. It takes 4 CDs to hold just the game) for the game, and then room besides that for saved games, your houses/families/neighborhoods and for custom content. (Figure that any custom content you get will take up much more room than the equivalent in TS1. The files are huge in comparison.)

I hope this helps.

Welcome to the forum!!!

Ok, at the risk of sounding like a huge idiot and messing up my first post ever, i have a question. how do you find this information about your computer? i have no clue what kind of RAM or whatever is on my computer... i got it a few years ago and i just got XP put on it. but now i'm worried that it might not be able to handle TS2. Anyway... mine was a gift i got from my parents a few years back.. so i don't know any info about my computer. Should i look up the model on the maker's webiste? or what?

It's always good to know the information from the maker's website. This is especially important if you want to upgrade as the information on that is usually not readily available within the computer itself.

However, you can find out basic information about your computer from your computer's dxdiag.

You get that by going to Start, clicking on Run, typing dxdiag in the box and then clicking to activate it. From the first tab (which usually has the system information) you get:
operating system
processor (make/model and speed in mhz or ghz)
memory (RAM)
direct X version (to know if you'll need to upgrade. 9.0b or better is what's required for the game.)

under Display or Display Devices you'll find:
card name
Chip type (if different form the card name)
display memory ("approx. total memory" or video RAM)

To find out how much room you have on your harddrive, go to My computer and right click on your harddrive (usually C:). Then click on properties. It has total, amount used, amount free and a pie chart showing what percentage is used.

It's good to have at least 25% of your harddrive free, or at least 5gb, for "manuevering" room for your operating system. Also, if you have less than 15% free, you may not be able to do a disc defragmentation.

And if you use your computer for gaming, you should do frequent defrags. On TS1 with Superstar, for instance, you should defrag when you are done playing each time. It wasn't so bad after Makin' Magic. We don't know how much TS2 will "chew up" the drive, but nightly defrags can't do harm but can do a lot of good. Waiting until the "analysis" says to do a defrag is for business purposes but is not sufficient at all for people doing gaming.

Nah it doesnt look like it. The RAM is to low for one thing. And what Video Card do you have? You can check the required system specs for the Sims 2 here (http://thesims2.ea.com/about_system_specs.php).

You have a supported non-T&L card with enough Processor to run it. But the minimum RAM is 256mb. So, you'd need to add a bit of RAM in order to run the game at the minimums.

I have bought some more RAM and will probably buy a new video card also so it will run better.

Okay, I'm going to ask the experts about whether we've got enough power to run the Sims2 on our computer...I didn't think we would but after reading the spec page now am wondering...We have the following:

AMD 1200/266 CPU
Asus A7A266 Motherboard
256 MB DDR RAM
ATI Radeon 7200 32 MB Video card
Maxtor 40GB Hard Drive

Hmmm, is that enough information for all you die-hard computer fans to tell me yes or no?

Your video card is actually 64MB. It also has T&L. Your computer should work fine with the processor and RAM you have, although a upgrade of either one of these would spruce up the game. ;)

I've installed sims 2 on a Pc with follow specs out of curousity
and it worked well, in that it was playable :-

Pentium II 350mhz
192mb sd ram
Geforce 2mx 32MB (agp x2 board)
XP pro
40Gb drive

so i imagine the minimum specs to be a little high then.

Anything is playable on a system. I installed The Sims 2 on my P2 400MHz downstairs, and the wait time was a killer.

Page 70 of the manual states:

"If your system is running anti-virus or crash guard programs you will need to close or disable them to run The Sims 2. To do this, find the icon . . . . ..

and

"Once anti-virus and crhash guard programs have been disabled, you should end all unnecessary general background tasks."

They suggest that you use Task Manager to close EVERY process (excluding System, Local Services, or Network service groups) except for explorer.exe or taskmgr.exe.

So, those of us who are connected to the internet through highspeed are expected to disable our virus protection while playing the game????? Preposterous. Opening ourselves to tons of problems, yes? I suppose we can unplug from the wall socket to disable internet, but come on. This is crazy.

If I saw that warning on the box, I wouldn't have bought the product. Now that I own it, and feel that it is unreasonable to run such a program that makes you disable virus protection, I can't return it.

Any thoughts???

I suppose I didn't have to do that either, but I was following instructions in order to make sure I did it correctly.

Bottom line is that Maxis is suggesting that we turn off virus protection. I see that as a SIGNIFICANT issue.

Those of us who don't fear computers can work around these things, but what about all the huddled masses who go by the letter of the law because they don't know there may be options.

These are the people who open themselves to real problems when they are instructed to "take off their condoms and have unprotected sex".

Just my two cents.

I noticed that a lot of people like me had the same problem with their video cards, which were not considered as compatible with DirectX 9.0c by their system, when they tried to start the game The Sims2. I followed your instructions, it means that I downloaded the latest driver for my video card and I reinstalled DirectX 9.0c on my computer. I think my card has upgraded, because the control pannel isn't the same anymore and it seemed that everything was ready to make the game work. But no !!!! I still receive that message before the game begin : No compatible graphics found on your system for DirectX 9.0c. I have a Gigabyte Maya Radeon 9000 pro with AGP bus, VGA driver, and the last driver from ATI... My OS is XP, what can I do now ? For three days I've been looking for a solution but in vain. Please, advise me something. Txs

Most of the games seem to have this sort of thing to help with performance. However, it depends on your system. I haven't disabled any of them, but I have a higher end computer.

Also, if you don't have the internet on when you are playing, then you aren't in any danger. Are you saying that your computer is permanently online at all times. Isn't there an offline setting at least (so that your computer has some privacy?)

AMD XP2500+ Barton
Gigabyte 7N400-L
Asus 9570 /nVidia 5700 with 128M
768 RAM - with Dual Channel activated
120 Gb Western Digital JB
Audigy
CD-RW
Modem Conexant

I Played long time Sims 2 without problems. Now, after 10 generations, at an exact moment, game is running VERY SLOW, even if with few seconds before is running very well. When that is happening, my sims are moving like into a replay, mouse not responding well, the game is not saving at all.
I don't have any memory resident programs (antivirus, optimizers).
I have enough disk space.
I have Windows XP SP1, DirectX 9.0c, and only drivers certified by Microsoft.
I use for video the generic driver from nVidia, version 66.93.

When saving, after about 7 minutes of "saving", I hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and I watch at performance tab: CPU 100%, RAM Free about 20 Mb.

I wave some skils with computers, I'm not a novice, but this problem is more than I can understand.

What can I do about it??????????
