In the first blog entry on landscapes (/index.php?/content/view/3/2/lang,en/) I emphasized the importance of light in the realistic rendering of modern computer games. I would now like to explain the technique we have developed to accurately simulate light in our graphic engine to apply it to the buildings you will use in Cities Unlimited. We are forced to cheat a little when simulating light in a 3D game, because our machines cannot possibly replicate exactly the physical complexity of reflection, refraction and other physical processes that allow us to see colors for example. To illustrate this blog entry, I am going to take one of the latest models built by our graphic artists: a soccer stadium. You will see below the first representation of the stadium in the game, i.e. the 3D wireframe mesh:
