Unable to open the game.

I've managed to run into a wall with my new PC. Every time I try to open the Sims 2, I get stuck at the first white screen saying "Sims2". After several minutes my computer locks up, forcing me to restart.
Tried patching it, updated drivers, still can't get it to work.
Any ideas?

OS: Windows XP pro SP3
Processor: Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 2.40GHz
Ram: 2gig
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 1gig
DirectX: Version 9

you might want to look into T H I S (http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1004&message=23511857)
On my rig (Vista/Athlon Dualcore/2GiG RAM) Sims2 wouldn't even attempt to start without the patch. Instead I got a pop up to search for a matching patch. (That might have been a "perk" of Vista though ;)
But ever since everything works just fine here.
