Chat Room?

I've been debating on installing a chat system here at WorldSims. Post your comments :)

I think it might be neat, like if you scheduled chats... on the other hand would we get spammers and rude people showing up and taking it over? Also, if we had a chat all the time, would people be as active in the boards? Still... I think it would be neat to chat sometimes!!

I find that people aren't really that into chats unless they are really big events.

Not really. Simschat shows a huge variety of people during 24 hrs. Most ppl are on when US is "awake" so to speak (US evenings and aftrnoons) Midday (for me) you'll find some ppl to, mainly asia and australia.

it has some point s to be "in the middle" timewise..
So I think a chat wold be nice.. but it needs some sort of masters. And it could be open certain hrs.. providing it covers good hrs for the planet.. Maybe it's easier to get masters for it then?

a chat would be good, but definately would have to have some sort of moderators...or somethin that sees such and such person say samething over and over in a certain amount of time, and that person is muted/banned with a message sayin so

We do have moderators at these forums who live from Europe, to the states (myself) to Australia.

Primary concern is traffic though. I don't want to use up TOO much bandwith.

good questions...the old chat had lots of smilies and a buch of diffrent rooms, it was also down a lot, if i remember correctly...and yes josh, what will the new one be like?

the chat we would use would be a modified version of phpmychat.
It would merge with the forums.

I think that is luck, Nina. Sourceforge is known to translate itself automatically to the language of preference of a user's PC.

Well, a chat room eats up a LOT a Bandwith, like my site went from 500 megs a month to over 1000 megs...just from the chat room alone...it might cost more...or cost the site to be temporilary down...just something to think about,

i just thought of something, if Josh wants more visitors, then he might get a few more if he had the chat, because it would end up being much like thesims only a lot weaker, and we would have mod's on all the time or almost all the time, what would the mods be named if Josh did make a chat...?

No Not really. hmm. it's like grrr. there are on swedish sites such for anyone to go onto. there are rules of course and webmasters keeps an eye and takes off any inpropriate stuff.

So true Fae!! But I think that a chat here would be easier to "keep clean", as it isn't that many people involved. In chat there are hundreds and hundreds coming and going. (except for Josh who rarely speaks a word;))
But we need the equivalents to simmasters then that's true. :)

Well apparantly we do have the ability to have a chat, it exists, just we're not scheduling any chat events HERE... I think it would be really cool if we set a day and made our own chat event here though, like Maxis does, only HERE, and just to hang out, have fun, and chat for a few hours! :)

And that's part of the greatness of this forum. I think so anyway. Let me see here. This is the aprrox. times right now. (+ 5 min. to make this post):
* When my time in central europe is 4.15 pm. And it is Saturday. I'm on GMT+1.
* Now, Brazil is 1.15 pm. (because of daylightsaving time they are that close).
* US westcoast is 7.15 am.
* But parts of Asia 11.15 pm
* West Australia is already at 1,15 Sunday morning.
* New Zealand has already Sunday morning 4.15 am.

We have active members in all these areas I believe. So what time shall we have?? This is a main issue I think. ;)

Look above Lew and you get the timetable around the world. And by Asia i mean your's and Tess' timezone. if an event will be held.

We also have people in UK here and they are on GMT-time wich is 2 hour behind me. So what's the best time?

I do believe we are going to have it on weekends at least. Then it's just to remember that when it's saturday 3 pm PST it's already sunday 7am in Asia and sunday noon in New Zealand. ;)

I know I’m the new kid on the block and all but I have a suggestion for Josh.

You could set up a chat room in msn as a test to see how popular it would be, kind of like a test run before you commit more bandwidth from here to it.

It’s free and all you have to do is post the link on a sticky on the main forum page or something.

BTW I’m in Australia (Victoria near Melbourne, we’re 4 hours ahead of Western Australia here)

But I know Josh have trouble solving some scripts. I've seen him and Tim wrapping their brains around it and it seems really hard to comprehend and handle. Until that's solved the chatroom wont be opened up at all. And there's NO telling about how long time it will take. After all. Josh has a workoverload that's awesome. And as the rest of us - he has a real life to handle too with all work he has there. He's already put his heart and soul in here.
You're awesome Josh. Please take care of yourself too and see that you get enough sleep and food as well. I really don't want you to collapse or get sick. :ermm:
