I'm wondering what is the difference between the Off Topic Forum and the General Chat Forum? Should ALL General Chat topics be sims related in some way? Which place would be the right place to post a getting to know you type thread, introducing myself a little better and asking other people to do the same?

One would be General and one would be offtopic (where offtopic would probably be something soooooooooo outlandish)

FaeLuna
09-21-2002, 08:36 AM
sooo... General would be like hey, how is everyone, my cat is eating my sock... and Off Topic would be like If the Martians Came would they be Dark or Light Green? :P

Helén

lol Josh!
Outlandish???? Talking to me??? .. *lol*
Well that makes me special if i'm "off topic".. Goes for anyone outside US then or??? To be "outlandish" hat is. Does the word really exist by the way?? Or are we creating a new language as well??
Most amusing...

FaeLuna

"outlandish" means to be outrageous, very strange, unusual, off the wall, bizzarre, crazy etc. Yes, it's actually a real word. :) I guess originally it might have come from people thinking people from different cultures did things strangely, so they called it out-land-ish... I've gotten so used to the word I never even think about that.

Same here Fae :)
I hate SATs...they always change your vocabulary.

Jake
09-21-2002, 01:55 PM
i have yet to take SATs....do it this spring or around there

FaeLuna
09-21-2002, 02:00 PM
hehe I didn't learn any new volcabulary for the SATs... I just read TONS of sci-fi and fantasy novels. You can still tell sometimes when I've learned a word from reading and not heard it used, I know what it means, I use it right, I just pronounce it ALL wrong!! But look, I got good trying to describe stuff.... I made up that definition....

Helén
09-21-2002, 02:12 PM
And so we have more learning to do. Thanks for the clearing of outlandish, but what is SAT????
Sorry. I'm just swedish bunny with a minor brain. (hoppetihopp)
*joke*
Really There are loads of words that are not commonly used and you never really learn them, especially not in school. *sighes* So i'm gonna keep asking you guys until I really got it. ok? (And hopefully remembers it too) :D

FaeLuna
09-21-2002, 02:14 PM
ummm let's see if I remember, I think it stands for Scholastic Aptitude Test, in the US people take it as a test to be accepted into College after they graduate from 1-12 grade school.

Jake
09-21-2002, 02:15 PM
SATs is a test you have to take in high school in USA. everyone 10th grader takes it, the higher test score the more likely you'll be accepted into a good college or university. i think thats right

Helén
09-21-2002, 02:16 PM
Aha! Thanks!

FaeLuna
09-21-2002, 02:16 PM
hey, maybe you can teach us stuff too!! What's the word for "bunny" in Swedish?? I'm always quoting the line from Buffy, "I've got a theory, it could be bunnies." :P I should learn that in as MANY languages possible!

Helén
09-21-2002, 02:37 PM
Sure in swedish that line will be:
"Jag har en teori, det kan vara kaniner".
one bunny/rabbit = kanin
plural = kaniner

hoppetihop

ManagerJosh

I should consider installing a language translator here...

FaeLuna
09-21-2002, 02:42 PM
whoah, that's scary I could almost READ that without the translating!! I see/guess "I have one theory, that can truth/reality/being -------------" the word for bunnies I would NEVER have guessed if you hadn't told me. :D

FaeLuna
09-21-2002, 02:43 PM
oh my goodness I just realized that my friend using the nickname Kanin for his bunny character is a word play!!! hahahahahehehehehe!!!! cool!!! I'm learning ALL the time!

FaeLuna
09-21-2002, 02:46 PM
Hey if you do any translating "official" for the site I think it would be cool to translate the words for all the Objects and Downloads people would be looking for on websites where they don't speak the language!! I found a lot of cool stuff on German sites but I had to learn what everything was the hard way, and guess on some....

I'd want to learn Object, Skin, Man, Woman, Child, Doors Windows, Stairs, Chairs, Sofas, Tables, Beds... you get the idea... oh and Plumbing and Toilet are always good words to know too!!

ManagerJosh
09-21-2002, 03:13 PM
I always use http://world.altavista.com

timz2rules

adding a translator would be nice, especially for those others who can't understand english :P

Helén
09-22-2002, 04:05 AM
Defantum have one at his site,
Well german is an easy one.. What about the chinese and russian sites? You should see the translations for the sims bars in the game... omg! They really get funny. But then there is no other words to use.. So i run it in english anyway.
But translations for downloads would be excellent i think. But what's more urgent is translations of instructions for downloads.

ManagerJosh

Dunno about Chinese though. The Chinese language has sooo many dialects it is hard to differentiate one from another.

One character may represent dog in one dialect, but the same character may represent ox in another dialect.

Sorta confusing to the translator wouldn't it be?

FaeLuna

Most movies I've seen use Mandarin and Cantoneese as the two Chinese language options, so I guess those are the 2 main ones so people would probably know one or the other??

Helén
09-22-2002, 07:52 PM
Why not check that with Drachelord or Lewdini? Lewdini is a member here if I'm not mistaken..

Those are the two primary dialects used. However I'm accounting for the many different people who visit here. Not all of them who come from China will speak the primary two dialects.

They are similar, however sometimes you will get completely different meanings. It is hard for a computer to know which dialect to use considering the same chinese character could have several dozen meanings when you translate it.

Real tricky stuff obviously.

lewdini

Someone should invent a universal translator ...like in Star Trek :)

Helén
10-02-2002, 02:18 AM
Lew you ought to know about chinese translators right?

lewdini
10-02-2002, 03:38 AM

Helén

Aarrgg..
Well seems chinese will be to tricky then....

*sighes*

:D

lewdini
10-02-2002, 07:18 PM
Thats why we are trying to standardise chinese into one dialect...mandarin

Helén
10-02-2002, 07:42 PM
That sound very good.
Dialects can coexist as well.

:bunny::bunny::bunny:

lewdini

Dialects originate from different towns/villages....even within an area...a dialect can be split into different dialects as different villages have different pronounciations....scary huh!?
