there have been way too many threads regarding this subject from people who are having the same problems. please check here before posting any problems to help keep the forum from having duplicate posts.

for anyone who wants to know how to find their graphics card type and how to upgrade their drivers:
if you do not know what your graphics chipset is, click start, run, and type dxdiag.exe and press enter. click the display tab. now you should see what kind of graphics chipset you have (something like intel, nvidia, or ati, which you can find under manufacturer).

If your card is intel-based, go here: http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df/Product_Filter.asp?ProductID=797
If your card is nVidia-based, go here: http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp
If your card is ATI-based, go here: http://www.ati.com/support/driver.html

once you arrive at the appropriate site, depending on how it is set up, you must enter your windows version (98, Me, 2000, XP) which you can find on the System tab in dxdiag.exe (listed under operating system). you must also provide the graphics chipset (should be something similar to Radeon, GeForce, Intel Extreme, etc, which you can find on the Display tab under chip type).

download the file they suggest and run it. it should upgrade your drivers and ask you to restart. do so.

here is information about installing directx:
now follow what josh posted about reinstalling directx. the thread is located here: http://forums.worldsims.org/showthread.php?t=2869

what to do from here:
if your problem is not solved once you have done everything above, please check the sticky posts josh made in the Tech Center forum and try those. also look at other people's posts in threads similar in nature to your problem. there is most likely a workable solution there.

if you still can't get the game to run or your graphics drivers to be compatible with directx, then please post your full computer specs (operating system, card chip manufacturer and chipset, etc) and a detailed explanation of your problem. specify whether the upgrade of the graphics driver was successful and whether you could install directx 9.0c and have it be compatible with your graphics card.

thank you everyone for following these steps as a lot of people were having the same problems and started multiple threads about the same thing. this should help in keeping the forum free of bunches of the same topic

note: People have been having problems with forced refresh rates. The refresh rate determines how many times your monitor refreshes its image in one second. Usually this is somewhere between 60Hz and 75Hz (1Hz is equal to one cycle per second, so 60Hz would be equal to 60 cycles per second).

People have stated that refresh rates other than 60 Hz will not be supported by the game. The game simply changes the refresh rate to 60 Hz and changes it back once the player quits the game. The problem originates when there is a program that is FORCING a refresh rate and does not allow the game to change it. This may be the cause of graphics problems that so many people are having.

Here are some threads that explain this problem (the second one is not from WorldSims):
http://forums.worldsims.org/showthread.php?t=2853
http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthr...#post1333186422

Check these topics out and try what other people are suggesting. Make sure there are no programs that are forcing refresh rates on you and do not allow the game to change them.

Thanks everyone :)

Hi,
I downloaded the update for my graphics card as it was posted(NVIDA) I have Windows XP. When I ran the game it went so much faster than before *yay*.However, when I got to the neighboorhood itself the graphics were still the same. Kinda blocky. Anyway, I thought that I might have downloaded the wrong update as there were a couple of ones for Windows XP. I then installed the one for Windows XP 64-bit version or something like that. Anyway, when my computer restarted after the installation everything became over-sized on my desktop. After that was fixed This error keeps coming up saying that there is a problem in:
C:\Windows\system32\nvmctray.dll
and that the system will now close. Then when I tried to click on the Sims 2 icon it gives an error message that I do not have DirectX9.0c which I do. So I re-download DirectX9.0 and when my computer restarts after the download finishes. it comes up with the error again about the.dll file. Did I totally mess up my computer ?? Please someone help!! Is there a way to fix this?? Please Please Please if you can help I would greatly appreciate it. Is there a way to set my computer back to a date before I messed it up :p *LOL*:p . Thanks again!! Have a Wonderful Day!! God Bless!! *smiles*:)

P.S. Below are my system specs:

whoa JDub: don't download 64-bit drivers unless you have an actual 64-bit processor in your system (AMD 64-bit or Intel Itanium processors (may be a few more out now)). Those are drivers specialized for a different kind of processor. You usually have a 32-bit processor (if you would have had 64-bit, it would say next to the processor in system information).

sha bang and attitudeimpaired: check out the link in my signature. it points to a list of things you can do that might solve your problem.

My problem's seem a lot more complex than those of the other posters. My computer won't give me any information on my current graphics driver. In dxdiag.exe it just gives me n/a for all the information. And when I tried to download one from each of the above sites it won't let any of them download. My computer is fairly new, so I don't see why it wouldn't have a compatible driver. When the prompt came up saying I needed to install 9.0c I had 9.0a already on my computer, while I tried the same thing on my mom's laptop and she had 9.0b and it worked fine. Do you know where I can get a driver that would work with it?

Oh ok, I've seemed to fix it.

what can I do to make sure I've got everything updated to capacity in order for the game to run the best it can? Since people seem to be having problems beyond this...

And for my chip it says Mobility Radeon... is there any updates I need for that?

Sorry I'm so computer dumb!

My game seems to work just fine but the save feature seems to take ages. I find myself putting off enduring it! lol On a thread in general discussion someone suggested I need to update my video drivers. I'm in fear of doing more harm downloading like JDub6758.

If I click on downloads and it takes me to that poorly designed chart and I click on graphics and then geforce and then windows xp all that pops up is something that says it supports all 6800 series. Is that what I download? Now if I click on downloads and then geforce but not anything in the third column and look at the bottom of the page there is another upgrade. If I scroll through it it does mention my geforce3 ti-200. Is that the one I need? So before you roll those eyes at how dumb can zydeco be, walk in my ignorant shoes a few moments! If you have a really ancient Direct X, however, it can't install it with that update. The update I believe requires that you start with Direct X8.1 or above.

But there is still the Microsoft site, which as the direct X which will update anything.

My problem is this XP compatability thing. I went to NVidia, downloaded the drivers that were, supposedly for XP, tried to install them, and got the "Failed logo test" thing. I only have driver version 5.2.1.4, which is the original drivers that came with my GForce FX 5200 card. Help!!!!! Please!!!!!

I am running XP Pro, sp2 with Direct X 9

Well, that ain't gonna cut it. You need newer drivers than that to run 9.0c and TS2. Download the drivers again and reinstall them. If that doesn't work, you may have to force the issue by hexing out the "logo test" nonsense. Like anyone cares if the logo doesn't match, anyway. If at first it doesn't work, force it. If it breaks, it needed to be replaced anyway.

If that doesn't work, you may have to force the issue by hexing out the "logo test" nonsense. Like anyone cares if the logo doesn't match, anyway. If at first it doesn't work, force it. If it breaks, it needed to be replaced anyway.Hexing out the Logo test? What does that mean? Does anyone know of a patch for windows XP that will help this? If the driver can't be recognized by XP, it just doesn't work right. So downloading an incompatable driver will not help me.

It uses a universal driver. Be sure you get the latest version (61.77 to my recollection)That is the latest driver, but when you try to install it, on XP you get that logo test failure B.S., that WHQL nonsense, with a warning that installation could cause instability, or failure of the device.

J. M. Pescado
10-22-2004, 08:01 PM
Oh, pay no attention to that. That's just some random blather about whether or not your driver is certified by some Windoze authority.

Ask yourself: Do you really believe a word Microsoft has to say about security or stability? No? Neither do I. A certification is only as good as the certifying authority, and in this case, the answer rates somewhere between worthless, and "well, at least you can still use it as toilet paper".

"Failed to find any DirectX 9.0c compatible graphics adapters in this system! Please make sure you have a DirectX 9.0c compatible graphics adapter and have installed the latest drivers provided by the manufacturer. The application will now terminate."

"Microsoft Windows detected and recovered from a device failure. Please save your work and reboot to restore full functionality."

Yeck, a Celery. And you definitely need more RAM, although you MIGHT be able to squeak by....IF you upgrade your graphics card. A 4 MB "card" ain't gonna cut it. Did you check for an AGP slot yet?

can someone give me the answer to this question please! The sims 2 requires atleast 256MB, but what if you have 32MB, will the game still run? Please email me at michellebuffy501@hotmail.com

Thank you
There are two places where you can find "mbs" that have to do with the game. RAM is measured in MBs and that is the one that needs to be a minimum of 256mb (and from what we found in the first few weeks, 512mb or more is definitely better.)

If you are talking about 32mb, chances are you are talking about the graphics card, not the RAM. For the graphics card you need at least 32mb, but you probably won't be happy since those are usually "shared memory" which means that they take away from the RAM to do it. And most of those are also not T&L enabled cards, which means that your processor has to be at least 2.0ghz (2,000mhz) to be able to do the game.

So, the best idea for you is to follow Manager Josh's advice to let us know what your computer already has in terms of specifications (aka "specs"). Here is how you figure that out:
You check your specs by going to Start, clicking on Run, and typing in dxdiag in the box. Once you've activated it you will see several tabs.

The General or System Information tab has some of the information (mixed in with a lot of things you don't necessarily need):

operating system

processor (make/model and "speed" in ghz or mhz)

memory (system RAM, "short term memory")

direct X version

The Display or Display Devices tab has:

card name

chip type (if different from the card name)

display memory or "approx. total memory" (also known as video RAM or video memory)

To get your harddrive (long term) memory, go to My Computer, right click on your harddrive, go to properties and look at the total drive memory/space and the free drive memory/space.

I don't mean to be a pain, as I can see that you are getting the same questions from everyone regarding the "Failed to find any DirectX 9.0c compatible graphics adapters...", but I have tried all your solutions so far without success. I know the name of my video card (S3 Twister K HP) but it isn't listed... Please tell me it's supported!!! I ran the DirectX Diagnostic and it says that the Direct3D 9 "Display driver does not support API (DDI version too low)"

Again, sorry if I could have kept looking, but it's been two days, and still no solution!

S3 video cards are in general lower end graphic cards, and are really poor in graphics. The best way to fix it is upgrade your graphics card to something that is DirectX 9.0 compatible.

Hi everyone, I am another Sims fan, and have spent hundreds of dollars upgrading my computer just to play this one game. I had the Sims 2 which ran fine on my computer, but since I purchased the sims University, I can't get anything to work. At first, when I tried to load a house, it would just get stuck in the loading screen. After troubleshooting and changing my hardware acceleration, I got the houses to load, but the sims don't move. It's almost as if it's stuck in pause mode. Tonight I tried to purchase more RAM hoping this would help, but it didn't. Now my houses load quicker but my sims still don't move. I tried updating my directX driver, but I got this message "The NVIDIA setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware" ... What does that mean???? I've recently had to reload everything on my computer because something went wrong with i dunno what...
Anyways.. before that i was enjoying playing with my little simmies
Naturally the sims2 was one of the first things i installed on my computer but now i can't play it because of some graphic error that was mentioned earlier in this thread...
I checked my for device name like it was suggested but it comes up with n/a for everything under device! I don't know what to do.
I also don't know if the driver name will help

main driver: vga.dll
version: 5.01.2600.0000

I'm using XP Pro and Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.8GHz and I've installed DirectX 9.0c

Also wondering if there's a way to tell where abouts this graphic thing is and if i could manually find out the model no. or manufacturer or anything at all

Thanks heaps for any help

Hmm. Have you run dxdiag? (Start >> Run >> then type dxdiag and press Enter)

The fact that you have "reloaded" your puter is significant. Do you mean that you have reinstalled Windows? If so you will need to reinstall your display device (graphics card) before you get the full functionality that The Sims 2 needs.

If your computer is an off the shelf system then you will have had a sytem restore disc and if you have used that then dxdiag will surely tell you about your display adapter ...

If on the other hand you have a custom built computer then you should have been given a packet containing all the software needed to restore your system. Check through it for an Nvidia or ATI disc. Using that should help you to get the thing up and running but after that you will probably still need to go to the appropriate website to download the latest drivers.

Also you probably ought to have made sure that you had Windows fully updated before installing software for fun. Others may disagree with me but I think that it is asking for problems to ignore free improvements. At the very least you should've installed Service Pack 2. I have just had to perform a clean install myself (last Saturday!) I spent most of Sunday restoring/updating my Firewall before adding anti-virus protection and upgrading that. After that I gave Windows its head and let it go get SP2. It was only then that I began downloading and installing new graphics drivers (Directx 9.0c came in with SP2) and other stuff. I also downloaded the latest patch for TS2, plus the dotNET framework and SimPE, and Homecrafter+ all of which I had lost in my Saturday afternoon partition implosion. I didn't install The Sims2 until Monday afternoon and University wasn't added until Wednesday.

Compared to before the game runs like a rocket.

Motto. Make haste less speed.

So ... do the dxdaig thing and report back here. We'll help all we can but we can't do a thing without some more data. :)

04-23-2005, 06:46 PM
I tried doing the dxdiag thing again and it still came up n/a for everything under device so i don't know the manufacter, the name, chiptype or anything. So anyways my computer is customed made and i don't have any of the software you're talking about. When i turn on my computer i noticed in the top left hand corner

NVIDIA 4.34.20.23 AA
GeForce FX 5200 BIOS

I dunno if that means anything, but i did a quick search of it and apparently GeForceFX5200 is some kind of graphics video card for something. Is that what I'm after??

Where can i get or download the software for it if it is? If its not it, then i was wondering if i could just open up my tower and physically get my hands on it to find out what exactly it is called?

Hm ... tricky.
Go to Control Panel (switch to Classic View [Left hand column, at the top])
Double click System.
Click the Hardware Tab.
Click the Device Manager button.

OK look down the list for device with a yellow warning triangle. It'll probably be labelled something like "Unknown PCI device".

Right click that and choose the porperties tab tell what it says about the device.
Do this for all instances of the yellow triangle.

Secondly where have you plugged in your speakers? The pictures shows a typical PC case with a soundcard installed in a PCI slot. The PCI slots are the bank of six vertical rectangles on the right hand side. The clump of sockets along the bottom edge of the picture are all ports on the motherboard. You computer might have the sound processor on the motherboard ... so we need to know about this.

Your system is Intel based. Use the Intel link at the htop of this thread.

http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df/Product_Filter.asp?ProductID=797 takes you to the most likely graphic controller for your 'puter.

You can find out exactly what your system is by running dxdiag:

Start >> Run >> type in dxdiag -- wait for it finish and then make a note of the contents of the tabs labelled system and display

We can't help you otherwise. :)

The GeForce 4 series is pretty low-powered but it should run the game so long as you don't expect to see crystal clear screens like the Maxis screen-shots. Be prepared to stick to smallish houses, smallish family sizes and no large gatherings/parties and the game should work with that card if that's the best you can fit into your 'puter.

There's no such card really. Most people who bought a cheap end card in the end paid for it dearly during their gameplay.

My suggestion is get at least a half decent card (GeForce 6 6600, MSRP: 169-199) and be happy.

If so the rest is easy (though it may take a while if you don't have a cable/broadband connection :p)

You need a graphics drive so highlight that in the left hand selection panel.

The next option lights up in the middle panel. Choose the top one: GeForce & TNT2 cos if you don't have that type of card you ought not to have bought the game at all!

The third panel of options becomes available. I imgaine that you want to choose the Windows XP\2000 option.

Hit the Go button and you'll download the latest driver. Just make sure you know where it is being saved to cos you actually need to double click it to run and install it before you can use it ... you will also then need to restart your puter ...

I am sorry, Erin, but your computer does not appear to meet the minimum system requirements. Your machine's ability to handle The Sims 2's graphics falls a very long way short of the bare minimum. In order to play the game you need a modern deidcated graphics card (approx US$100) though your present computer may not be worth upgrading. Sometimes it is cheaper in the end to replace with newer, better, faster etc.

Sorry to be a bearer of bad news. :(

Hi,
I am trying to get my new sims2 game to work on my computer. It's a compaq presario 700 with windows xp home edition installed. It has an s3 Graphics Twister K Compaq graphics adapter on board and I can't get it to be compatible with directx 9. Every time I try to run the game, it says "failed to find any directx 9.0c compatible graphics adapters in this system! Please make sure you have a directx 9.0c compatible graphics adapter and have installed the latest drivers provided by the manufacturer." and then it exits the game. I followed your instructions for finding out all of the details on the graphics adapter and this is what I got...
Device:
Name: s3 Graphics Twister K Compaq
Manufacturer: s3 Graphics Inc
Chip Type: s3 Twister K
DAC Type:s3 SDAC

Date: 12-12-2001

VDD: none
DDI Version: 7

Thanks for all your help,

there have been way too many threads regarding this subject from people who are having the same problems. please check here before posting any problems to help keep the forum from having duplicate posts.

for anyone who wants to know how to find their graphics card type and how to upgrade their drivers:
if you do not know what your graphics chipset is, click start, run, and type dxdiag.exe and press enter. click the display tab. now you should see what kind of graphics chipset you have (something like intel, nvidia, or ati, which you can find under manufacturer).

If your card is intel-based, go here: http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df/Product_Filter.asp?ProductID=797
If your card is nVidia-based, go here: http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp
If your card is ATI-based, go here: http://www.ati.com/support/driver.html

once you arrive at the appropriate site, depending on how it is set up, you must enter your windows version (98, Me, 2000, XP) which you can find on the System tab in dxdiag.exe (listed under operating system). you must also provide the graphics chipset (should be something similar to Radeon, GeForce, Intel Extreme, etc, which you can find on the Display tab under chip type).

download the file they suggest and run it. it should upgrade your drivers and ask you to restart. do so.

here is information about installing directx:
now follow what josh posted about reinstalling directx. the thread is located here: http://forums.worldsims.org/showthread.php?t=2869

what to do from here:
if your problem is not solved once you have done everything above, please check the sticky posts josh made in the Tech Center forum and try those. also look at other people's posts in threads similar in nature to your problem. there is most likely a workable solution there.

if you still can't get the game to run or your graphics drivers to be compatible with directx, then please post your full computer specs (operating system, card chip manufacturer and chipset, etc) and a detailed explanation of your problem. specify whether the upgrade of the graphics driver was successful and whether you could install directx 9.0c and have it be compatible with your graphics card.

thank you everyone for following these steps as a lot of people were having the same problems and started multiple threads about the same thing. this should help in keeping the forum free of bunches of the same topic

ok so I tryed everything you said right there. you said its spost to say something like intel, nvidia, or ati. mine says n/a what do i do if it says n/a?

If you have been reading my posts, you will have seen my signature. One part of it is the Frequently Asked Questions. Have you read them? If you had you would have been able to post your sytem specifications because you would have read the post about how run dxdiag.

I can't come around to house to hold your hand. Just reading random posts and using them to ask unanswerable questions is gonna get you nowhere.

Also bear in mind that there is not a large army of people just sitting at their PC's waiting on the offchance that someone is going to post a question. No one has all the answers and so few questions get answered immediately. We try to help but we do it for fun. When we're not looking at the forum we're usually doing something else ... like playing the game.

Read the FAQ's. Post your system specs and you'll get an answer ... as quickly as it is convenient for one of us to respond.

OK sweetheart ... let's go in stages.

First make sure you have the latest Windows updates. You should be on Service Pack 2 ... Click Start >> Help & Support >> Keep your computer up-to-date with Windows Update

Next thing is you probably need to upgrade your graphics driver ... go to this Intel link (http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df-external/Support_Intel.aspx) and follow your way through it to get the graphcis/display driver updates and follow the instructions for downloading and installing.

If all that doesn't work please refer to the FAQs - see the link in my signature and repost with a dxdiag report and a detailed description of what the problem is. OK?

I would recommend having at least 512MB of RAM to play TS2.

Any video card will do depending on what slot you have on the mother/main board inside your computer.

If you have an AGP slot, then get an AGP card and put it in, install the drivers and it should work.

sims2addict85
10-21-2006, 10:49 AM
so how do I get 512MB of RAM?

Flameback777
10-21-2006, 10:54 AM
Easiest way would be to take your computer tower down to the local computer shop and ask for them to install 512MB of RAM and upgrade the graphics card. They should be able to see what card you'll need then.

I'm having the "failed to find..." problem..I been trying for awhile to fix this but it isn't working. I have no idea what I'm suppose to use. Everything says n/a when I looked for what type of chip set...but what i do know is this:

K7 Triton series agp8X/dual channel DDR motherboard (http://www.techspot.com/vb/showthread.php?p=372169#)
Windows Xp
I think the processor (http://www.techspot.com/vb/showthread.php?p=372169#) is: AMD Athlon
1.24 GHz, 1.00GB of RAM
Network Adapters: 1394 Net Adapter and
Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC

sound video and game (http://www.techspot.com/vb/showthread.php?p=372169#) controllers:
NVIDIA nForce Audio Codec Interface
legacy video capture devices
legacy audio drivers
standard game port
Creative SB Live! Value
Creative SBLive! Gameport

I'm guessing I use NVIDIA but which one? There are 50 types on the site.

I have played the game before on my computer and it worked perfect. Then I had to erase everything and now it won't work when I reinstalled it. Any help would be great.

S3 video cards are in general lower end graphic cards, and are really poor in graphics. The best way to fix it is upgrade your graphics card to something that is DirectX 9.0 compatible.

So, it will not work with this S3 card at all? I wish it would say that on the box. I didn't know this and i don't have the slightest idea how to install a new graphics card. I downloaded the driver, etc. but can i make it play at all, even if it's choppy?

Have tried moving dsetup.dll & dsetup32.dll and dxsetup files to system32 directory - no joy.

Other points: Have managed to load this game once before and get it running but cannot seem to do it this time.

Also in loading directx from microsoft (just in case this was the problem), I thought it might be sensible to load the latest version - 10. This hasn't helped, but further cannot find directx - 10 to uninstall it, to go back to version 9.0c.

I imagine epople here are sick of seeing these threads, but I am out of ideas!!

Help. Please.

Bill
