I voted. :) The Sims were winning, hand's down! :) I think we need to keep this thread and the link active and near the top for the month so we can all remember to vote. We can cast a vote each day for 30 days. ;)
BTW, what other games are y'all voting for? I'm definiatly voting for Tomb Raider. :) That was my obsession before the Sims. :)

I'm like Rowanstaff...I love Civilization. I've spent untold hours of my life playing one version or another. I still play Sid Meier's old Colonization and enjoy Pirates. I'm counting the days until Civ4 is released. On the other hand, I'm old enough to remember how important Pac-Man was. I even owned an arcade version. I can't pass an old Space Invader without dropping in a few quarters. My Pong is boxed away in the basement. While I might vote for Will Wright due to all the games of his I've owned...I'm not sure I can vote for The Sims as the best game. To be honest, The Sims would have lost its appeal for me long ago without the sim community taking it to another level. I have fond memories of many of the games listed. I may have to use my vote to bump some of the oldies. Most of the younger players will never know how fantastic some of those were in their glory days.

Ah yeas. I would've spent the NL cash on Pirates if it had been on the shelf. I really loved the old Commodore 64 version as for Civ, I have 1, 2 & 3 and am looking forward to 4 coming out. I'm hoping that the new 3D mapping will mean that the world actually gets narrower toward the poles ;) I can't play Colonization any more cos it was an MSDOS based thing that XP spits at like a hissy cat. I really used to love whupping the backsides of those pesky tory red-coats climbing out of their big ships and getting all uppity 'bout tea and taxes ... ooops. Off topic.
My main vote still goes for the Sims precisely because it was so immediately accessible for modders and gamers to create and share content and gameplay (ie story telling etc.)

tied with Lara now.
the other major game i voted for was Myst. i dont know who else here has played it, but that game is very interesting to say the least. my cousin was the one who got it. i remember at one point we stayed up all night trying to get through certain areas on there. like the underground labyrinth: at one point we got so lost we ended up going back to the beginning and did a massive map across a dozen sheets of paper. lol. then some time later i ended up trying out realmyst which is essentially a cosmetic upgrade from the original myst to a full 3d rpg.
those who havent played it should really try it out.

I always vote Everquest, Final Fantasy, The Sims, Resident Evil. Together these 4 franchises have taken a decade of my life away. However, I believe these fluctuations we see are the result of other fansites posting "OMG GO VOTE!!!111!!!" posts for their various gaomes. However, I believe the final winners will be tha games with most consistent votes. So keep plugging away and KEEP VOTING!

My brother loves the game genre of Survival Horror. Hey, what's everyone's favourite game company though? I actually hate EA. THey milked all the money out of us with their expansion packs for TS! Try voting for the games that nobody else is voting for to help deprive the current leaders (apart from Sims of course) of votes. Sly and sneaky! I'm voting for Tetris and PacMan. I actually like both those games - I'm not voting for them to be sly and sneaky!

My estimates at this point is there's at least 750,000 Everquest and Everquest II players. But that doesn't compare nearly to the millions of Sims players in the world...
Same with Final Fantasy and Lara Croft...the numbers don't add up.
Note: I'm also assuming that people don't play both..just one or the other :)

Mirelly
10-08-2005, 01:25 AM
The truth is simple, surely. The Sims is so good that players don't have the time to bother with fansites. :D
Games like Lara Croft require fansites because half the players could never complete even level one without a walk-thru. I don't know about EQ but FF seems also to need a high degree of walk-thru-ery. The Sims franchise is so simple even children can play it, those of us who go in for the full custom content/modding experience (creating it or using it) are, I suspect in the minority of the wider, but still loyal, fanbase.

I suspect you you might be right. I never liked the games my son likes--so much violence and gore. He gave me one of his to play and for a while it was rather interesting. That was Baldurs Gate. I liked some of the characters, exploring strange landscapes, meeting fanciful creatures, but I got tired of the fighting required.
In any event, he has no interest in games like the Sims and would not vote for it, if asked to vote.
And I think Mirelly is right, too. People who play the Sims games are not quite the same type of people who play the RPGs and shooter games. Are the Sims fansites where we find clothes and furniture downloads pushing the contest on Walk of Game? Does the membership of Sims fansites add up to the millions who play the game? The Sims2 official site is crowded but not THAT crowded. Huge numbers of Sims players don't seem to bother with going online except to get a patch or an occasional problem or bug resolved.

What really surprises me is how far down Half-Life is on the list. This game is considered the number 1 game of all time by many gaming sites. I switched from Resident Evil to Half-Life a couple days ago for my last vote. Half-Life changed what everyone thought FPS and Roleplaying games could do... like, for example, be the same thing. It took rushing monsters and showed us what an AI squad could do. It opened the door for unbelievably complex and rewarding story-based games, like Systems Shock 2.
And its in like 12th place. I haven't seen word one about it on any of the Half-Life fan and news sites I frequent.
I think this Walk of Game is not going to be a measure of a game's merit, but of the ability of fan sites and media sources to generate buzz.

Notice how John Carmack is at the top of the Lifetime Achievement list while his game Quake is at the bottom of the Games/Characters list? Doom is midway between. :( Are Doom and Quake somehow evolutionary or revolutionary?

Like I said before, I'm ready to call that a sham.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but HOW THE HECK did The Sims drop to 9th Place in the course of 10 days? That's physically impossible.

I thought the Sims was still in 5th place when I voted Monday morning. Maybe it was wishful thinking but I'm certain they hadn't dropped as low as 9th. I'm forced to agree. Something is screwy about the count. Also, the John Cormack numbers really confuse me, although what I know about the gaming industry could be written in large letters on a 3 x 5 card.

Okay, I'm OFFICIALLY calling this vote a sham
The votes here are totally off. Go look here (http://forums.worldsims.org/showpost.php?p=86930&postcount=64) and here (http://forums.worldsims.org/showpost.php?p=88127&postcount=68). During a period of ten days from when I posted the last stats of votes and closing, these were the rankings of Will Wright, The Sims, and The Winners. The first set of stats will be marked as (A) and the Second set will be marked as (B)
Starcraft: (+2 Change)
(A) 3rd Place, 24.9%
(B) 1st Place, 41.5%
Final Fantasy (-1 Change)
(A) 2nd Place, 27.4%
(B) 3rd Place, 38.5%
Lara Croft (-9 Change)
(A) 4th Place, 24.0%
(B) 13th Place, 13.1%
Everquest: (-1 Change)
(A) 1st Place 36.2%
(B) 2nd Place 38.9%
The Sims: (-4 Change)
(A) 5th Place, 23.2%
(B) 9th Place, 17.9%
Sid Meier: (-1 Change)
(A) 3rd Place, 40.6%
(B) 2nd Place, 43.4%
John Carmack: (0 Change)
(A) 1st Place, 47.1%
(B) 1st Place, 56.8%
Will Wright (-2 Change)
(A) 2nd Place, 43.0%
(B) 4th Place, 37.5%
Correct me if I'm wrong, but with such a drastic shift with Lara Croft, something is WRONG here. Go look at a few other games above The Sims. Something is DRASTICALLY wrong. Will dropped 2 whole places in two days! Toru Iwatani even jumped a spot here. I really want to see the final tallies here because I don't like this one bit. Having The Sims taking this huge tumble is one thing, but the stats jump here is so drastic, it raises my eyebrow.
When I have a moment, I'll check for a 5% margin of error and see how off the stats could be (range-wise).

I don't know if it still does, but back when I was playing Tomb Raider, there was a huge online community similar to the TS2 community. I wonder if they had a last-minute push for votes?
