View Full Version : I Think The Universe Hates Me

I have been having a trying year and today confirmed what I have suspected for several months now. On Sunday I decided I could finally allow myself to unpack my PC and get back to simming. So I spent yesterday getting that part of the room ready. So far, so good.

This morning I had to go out to pay some bills and get some groceries and other stuff so I though 'twould also be the ideal occasion to pick up my nice shiny new copy of Nightlife at my local Asda. Aaaaaaarrrrggghhhh! SOLD OUT!

I was so annoyed I nearly bought Doom3 ... but luckily the picture on the case was so scary I couldn't actually pick it up. ;)

My sims are all safely parked and waiting for a downtown to open up near them and what am I doing? Making soup and watching the flipping Hallmark channel ... I've nearly run out of Kleenex

That's so awful  . Even the guides were sold out at my local CompUSA store. Will they restock soon?

Aw I'm not too worried really. I live within sneezing distance of one the largest malls in Euroland ... there's gotta be a copy of NL there with my name on it! Trouble with malls is the incredible amount of hiking needing to get around all the stores ... not the mention the incredible weight of credit card slips that have to carried home! :p I have to go there on Wednesday anyway so hopefully on W'day night I'll be ... 'downtown ... where all the lights are bright, downtown etc. etc.

10-03-2005, 10:46 AM
That's great that you'll already be making a trip to the mall. However, I'd be rather broken hearted that it wasn't at the store on the day I was ready to grab it.

Hubby and I were on vacation when Nightlife hit the shelves. I was going through a bit of withdrawal. When we got back, we had a few extra bucks left and I convinced him that I HAD to have the EP. Actually, I had to bribe him with a copy of a new release of one of his favorite PS2 games. :D I couldn't stand having to wait to get it! I'm terribly impatient.

I had to bribe my honey too, he got Burnout 3 revenge for xbox, although I've been playing that myself and am farther along than him in that game! He was trying to tell me that nightlife would make a great Christmas gift for a while...I told him he was nuts. I ended up pre-ordering it with the free overnight shipping code.

Bribe him? I don't think I even mentioned it till the postman didn't arrived with it at the door and I started sulking :p . Actually, there was a certain amount of glee when I pre-ordered, I had recieved a $10 fathers day gift voucher for an on-line store that I frequent and used that to purchase NL, that'll teach him for saying 'Your not my mother' when it was mothers day as an excuse for not getting me anything! :devious:

I feel so much better knowing I'm not the only person this has happened to! I'm afraid I wasn't very nice the year my family overlooked mother's day and my birthday (same month). I did nothing for any birthday for the entire year. I simply mentioned that it appeared everyone voted not to celebrate them. (I'll admit I wouldn't have done something this extreme if my kids hadn't been in their early teens.) It's amazing how much attention is given to mother's day and my birthday now. ;) All family members must learn at some point that if Mama isn't happy...no one is.

I didn't quite bribe hubby for Nightlife...I used subtle manipulation. On the way to the electronics dept in Wal-Mart, I started to inquire how he was doing with his fantasy baseball team. I mentioned that I would be somewhat glad when it was over because we always seemed to have a baseball game playing on tv. :( He mentioned that he had signed up for fantasy football, too. :o I picked up Nightlife at that point and said I wanted to buy this sometime. He took it out of my hand and tossed it in the shopping cart. I gushed, he grinned. He can now watch unlimited football and I can play Nightlife without guilt.

By the way ... when I first married I found that taking hubby to the supermarket tended to result in large numbers of impulse purchases of the biscuit and beer variety causing severe pains in the housekeeping budget. After a while I found that stopping off at the golden arches en route to the market and stuffing him with a supersize meal resulted a net saving equivalent to a whole chart CD. I thought I was being dead clever until I discovered that I was piling on unwanted pounds (courtesy of my own MacD intake) and the lucky rat with the hairy legs was actually losing weight (due to a drastic reduction in sugary snack consumption). :(

I never bothered to say anything to hubby. :o I just bought it. The man is an accountant who uses computers all day long at work but can't figure why anyone would play games on them. When I talk about the Sims his eyes glaze over. He refers to this forum as a chat room (no matter how many times I correct him on this.) I did, however, get his attention when I printed out information about the EA corporation. He had no idea there was so much money involved in the computer game industry. He's a little more curious but would still rather watch football on TV.

That is so annoying about men. I cut back on both sugar and fat consumption and nothing changes, not even a pound. Hubby, on the other hand, looks as trim as a catalog model. It ain't fair. :o

Tell me about it. My husband I both tend to gain weight, part of the curse of middle age, but he can drop it like that if he just diets for a week or so, while I struggle and struggle ... Of course it helps that he has a physical job (he's a baker) while I sit on my arse all day at a computer ... but someone has to make the big bucks. As he likes to joke, he makes the bread, I bring it home. ;)

He always showers me with gifts. I guess I'm spoiled. We don't have a lot of money but if I really want something, like NL, I get it. It helps that he goes to bed early (ah, the life of a baker). Once the kid's in bed I can play guilt-free.

Shame on those husbands who say "you're not my mother." THEY didn't have to give birth! You just slap 'em upside the head for me. :p

My friend who was going to install NL is expecting twins any day (or rather, his wife is) and can't do it! Time for Plan B: Ingratiate myself with my little brother, who is a computer genius. Of course he has a two year old daughter, so time to himself is minimal, but I bet if I babysat while he upgraded my computer it would all work out ... wish me luck!!!!

I'm getting so bored with the game, especially with my inferior chip! I need NL, stat!

My boyfriend goes down to the gym every other day for a week and loses 10 pounds, I went to the gym every other day for a month and gained 5...I don't get it. I don't think I ever will. My parents are the same way, my dad is fit and trim, and my mom, no matter how much she diets and exercises, can't lose the weight. But God did make us this way for a reason, this way we're able to support a life inside of us...those super skinny chicks aren't healthy enough to have a baby because they don't have any fat. At least that's what I fall back on! ;)

Meow-swish-crack! (LOL...j/k...I firmly believe that no man who is in a long term relationship can truely be happy until he makes peace with the fact that he is whipped. :p)

My wife is the fiscally responsible one in the family and handles the bills, so when she asks for something expensive for herself I've learned to say, "Your the one who pays the bills. If you think we have enough money just buy it for yourself...you're worth it." Most of the time she guilt-trips herself out of buying it, but enjoys hearing the compliment. Win-win for me! ;)

Back to the topic. I got NL yesterday and spent the afternoon and evening installing it and testing it with Pescado's hacks (http://www.moreawesomethanyou.com/smf/index.php). Had some amusing gameplay errors until I noticed I had left in a bad one (a child failed to transition to teen -- no grow up option either -- forced it with a cake and he became a teen with one day to go before becoming adult; also when the game was loaded he was stood in the basement with no homework at ten to three on a school day and he'd gone off to school earlier before I started restoring downloads after the first try outs with NL installed).

The bad hack was the phone hack BTW

I got NL yesterday and spent the afternoon and evening installing it and testing it with Pescado's hacks (http://www.moreawesomethanyou.com/smf/index.php).
Did you use Dr. Boris' list from the site? I left all of Pescado's hacks in but turned most of them off with the Clean Installer. Did you find the new NL hacks? They made them a little difficult to locate. The phone hack occupies whole threads because it doesn't work and the constantly ringing phone is driving everyone crazy. The autoyak is working for me. I find this one an absolute necessity. It isn't working quite like it used to but I can live with the one minor problem I'm encountering.

I did have one odd thing happen and it's irritating me to no end. My game was working just peachy but someone on MATY recommended making the objectpkg read only. MaxoidTom said that was a brilliant idea...so I dug it out and did that. When I went to play the game none of my hacks worked. :( I adore Carrigan's "Forever Burn Fireplace". It was working fine...I know because I have every fireplace in my game blazing gloriously. Once the objectpkg was marked read only every home I visited caught on fire. Aspects of macrotastics ceased to work. I'm curious if anyone else tried making their objectpkg "read only" and if their hacks are working. It's certainly possible I did something wrong.

Mirelly
10-06-2005, 05:04 AM
Oh I looked at Boris' list and then my eyes glazed over. In spite of the (mostly) good advice that I hand out I mostly operate my own computer with the delicacy of a chainsaw and axe. Sometimes life is too short for reading long lists ... why couldn't MATY have created a NL archive of workable hacks ... I just started out by removing the ones I could live without and then playing for a bit to see what went wrong. (I was only playing a sideshow family so am not too bothered if they become irreversibly damaged  )

Meanwhile I can't wait for the business EP to come next year!! :D

10-06-2005, 05:21 AM
Well...actually I didn't follow Boris' list precisely either. ;) I put in those I wanted to work. There is some level of denial or something. I know it's ridiculous but in my mind maybe a miracle will occur and those will work in my game. :D

No offense taken. In fact, I'm always teasing the missus telling her that she must be gay 'cause she married a big ol' girl. :p Or you can blame it on the fact that my Reader's Digest subscription ran out...leaving nothing but Mamabear's Soap Opera Digests to read in the bathroom. ;) Speaking of which, has anyone noticed that sims can interact with the newspaper while sitting on the toilet? Thanks, Zy! I didn't know that about the lotbin. I'll have to do that before I move people into houses I might want to reuse.

No, I didn't get to save anything. It's all gone. But I had way too many downloads anyway, so now I can just go and get my favorites.

And thank you for the kind words, Lynet. I feel terrible about those sims. I had a really good story going, and I'm really going to miss them. I was looking forward to going back to my old neighborhood just to watch the sparks fly ... it's going to take a while to build a new one.

But, on the plus side, my sims have reflections! Clicking between floors doesn't take 10 years! They no longer saunter everywhere (OK, the college sims do, but they do it much faster.) I can see the neighbor's houses, even if they are a bit ghostly. I have got to get rid of that big rock next to Lola's dorm LOL. I hate looking at it all the time. :p

And ... the entire game loads in no time at all. You have no idea how long I was waiting with my old chip, even the "good" one ... the opening movie makes me a bit dizzy, it goes so fast now.

Yes, Lola is a pleasure sim! :D And she does indeed get what she wants ... I'll post a picture soon.

One nice thing I've noticed about NL is that Uni doesn't have to be a drag anymore. They're not cut off from the neighborhood any more, so it's just another life phase. They can go anywhere, do anything they want, which will make studying trickier I admit.

I'm sorry you had to scrap everything but it's certainly the best method for spring cleaning all the downloads. :p I was surprised when I did that, that I knew exactly what items were necessities and where to get them. I never missed most of the items I trashed. Older downloads have huge poly counts that slow the computer down anyway. Most of the newer ones have made an effort to keep this down.

I have no clue why but I think the addition of Nightlife makes the whole game work better...smoother. Perhaps they added some University fixes. My game has always loaded quite well (I can tell when my downloads are getting out of control when it starts taking longer to load) and I was prepared for Nightlife adding to the loading time. I've been pleasantly surprised to find that wasn't the case.

Oh, Witches, I am so sorry! :( I know from experience how painful it is to have to start all over. Yes, they are very much like pets, or like friends, or whatnot. Anyway, I will say it gets better with time, the hurt heals, and you get involved with your new Sims's lives and can actually make them better than the last time because you are a better player.

For example: My favorite Sims have had three lifetimes already!

Hicks Family (single mom Charlene and her 4 children Jackson, Bambi, Luke and Leia): Lifetime #1: Charlene married a Russian named Ivan and argued with her stepdaughter. Her oldest daughter Bambi was taken by the social worker. Oldest Son Jackson married a cheater and was raising a set of twins that actually belonged to a neighbor. The Super-flu swept through the house and killed both parents. Luke stayed in the family trailer and married Annoying Sofie the townie. Leia kept playing the field and had a daughter, Rowena. She lived with Jackson and his family.

Lifetime #2: Charlene was a better mother (and had invested in a magical hacked painting that could keep everyone happy and willing to do their homework). She married Napoleon Bonypart for a time and had several children with him before she caught him in bed with Kaylynn the maid. After he left she took his money and his children and moved into a restored farmhouse in the quiet countryside, and was happilly helping to raise her grandchildren. Bambi and Jackson went to college, fell in love with classmates, and married them soon after graduation. Luke was eaten by Tina Jerry's cow plant. Leia played the field. She had joined a Sorority and was actively persuing her ex-stepfather Napoleon.

Lifetime #3: Charlene is young again and back with her 4 children, Jackson, Bambi, and twins Luke and Leia. Jackson is now in college. As a teen he has some "Dream Dates" with Marion the paper-girl. Now he and Marion are Woo-Hooing it up in college, and because the full-sized bed is in her dormroom, Jackson has not set foot in his own. Both of them want to get married and have lots of children. Charlene is dating Larry the Cable-guy. Bambi is a teenager and Luke and Leia (I've changed her name to Laura) are little kids and doing well in school.

:D They get a chance to do it all over again, and again, and again. LOL LOL

Surprised, I didn't have a computer problem which resulted in me starting over. However, I'd been getting some weird instabilities and when I started reading about the problems when you have over 800 characters in your neighborhood's character file, it can cause problems. I went and looked, and sure enough I had 881 characters. (And that was pre-NL.)

So, I decided that I'd start over. Once you've been playing a while and getting used to your new people, the loss of the old ones doesn't hurt quite so much.

And when I restarted I was able to make a neighborhood which fit my needs much better in terms of terrain (although I did have to get SC4 out again), organization and the like. (Problem was, I kept getting the lines of the credits from "6 Million Dollar Man" running through my brain at odd times. You know the one: "we can make him better than he was.")

Thanks, everyone. I do feel better. I know I'll have to resurrect a few of my favorites, eventually, or at least name a baby after them ... I started over before, but not by erasing the game, and I could return to that neighborhood whenever I wanted ... now, of course, I can't.

I played Strangetown for a while and kind of got into it, but now that I'd have to start over I'm not that interested in it anymore ... still, I know it's on the back burner if I need a break.

In the meantime Lola and I are learning the ropes of NL. She already met a cute guy in a restaurant (Rodney's Hangout) and is working her way toward being friends with him. His name is David something and he's a college student, I'm pretty sure. Anyway, he is fiiiine. :D

I saw my first vampire. She was really corny! Kept sucking on her own arm. Blaaaah blaaaah blaaaah I vant to suck your blood, or my arm ... Honestly, hard to take her seriously. If I create a vampire, I hope they don't do that all the time! I'd have to kill them off.

Clueless. :D

I hadn't met a vampire but some guy came around towelcome me to the neighbourhood the day my Sim moved in. I discorved shift-clicking n him after using boolprop I could turn him into a vampire. He changed straight away, became all dark atc, and then ---

attempted to steal my newspaper. With my Sim stood right in front of him watching. Not exactly rock 'n roll. An interaction box appeared with him looking as though he was leaping on her. I thought it was going to say 'Be bitten' but it actually said 'Yell at'. However before she could do that, he said something about it being the day he must flee. And everything went back to normal.

Oooh. I had a vampire try to muscle in on my sims date. I tried to shoo him away when dawn broke and he started to smolder and scuttled away to hide from the sun. LOL

Obviously, I haven't finished reading the Prima Guide for Nightlife. :o I'm afraid I'm not to the "vampire" section. By teleporting the Count (using Inge's little shrub) and letting him bite one of my sims, it unlocked his ability to run amok and turn townies into vampires. :( One of my sims came home from school the other day with a "new" friend. He got off the bus and started screaming about the light and ran home. It seems a number of my townie kids are now vampires. (At least they don't hang around after school for long now. :D)

I went into SimsPE and created a relationship with a Countess for one of my Sims. Then he called her and asked her out on a date. Before the date ended, they were in love, and she bit him. I thought that the relationship had to be a high level before they would bite?

The idiot decided to go swimming in the afternoon. Guess what happened to him.

what are the clues that a regular np or sim has become a vampire? since some of the posts imply that many of their nps had become vamps. so how do you avoid bad nps?

The vampires are pretty obvious. Their skin is a blue color and they walk around like a caricature of Dracula. They are pretty cartoony vampires. And when a NPC that you know is bitten, they will have a special vampire icon. They have their hands up near their faces and their fangs bared.

I wanted to make Spike (you know, from Buffy), so I made him a college student, but honestly if he's going to be acting like a two-bit movie monster after he gets bit I think I'll pass ...

Has anyone had a player vampire yet? Are they cool or just silly?

They are cool for all of 5 minutes. LOL I wanted to make Lestat and decided against it for the same reason you decided against making Spike. Lestat is suposed to be sexy, not silly!

That's a perfect description of the vampires. :( They are cheesy. I wish you could choose to include them in a neighborhood...or not.

I wonder what would happen if you befriended them all and invited them to move in and then let them have a little "accident" ... would they be gone? I'm thinking the game would probably make more, so it would probably be a waste of time.

I think the Count and Countess are like Mrs. Crumplebottom...NPC's that must never be killed or you fubar your game. Maybe someone will make a hack that fixes this at some point.

I wasn't going to try it anyway. Much more fun to annoy them ... especially Mrs. Crumplebottom. I think I'll go out of my way to make an enemy of her sometime ... just cuz I like playing with fire. :D

Mrs. Crumplebottom? There's a Mrs. Crumplebottom in NL? Or are you talking about the Mrs. Crumplebottom from TS1? I loved her; so much fun to start making out in front of her and watch her blow up.

Yes, there is Mrs. Crumplebottom in NL, and she is really mean, she ruined one of my sims dates the other day by wacking her (my sim) with her handbag repeatedly over the head, kinda killed the romance....

Yeah, she's a nuisance, but a funny one. She started whacking Marcel Mace over the head when he was on a date with Sheila Mae Sparrow (from my Dear Emmy story) but it didn't hinder their love affair. They're married and have a baby now :D

I ended up having two "Mrs. Crumplebottom"-types on a date last night. Virginia Dawn was dating one of the Moore Twins (Samuel, the cute and fun one.) Virginia had been dating Tina Simpson's son Kaleb. Well, Tina just happened to be at the PURE club, having drinks with Mrs. Crumplebottom. She was infuriated that Virginia would be cheating on her baby boy! She kept running up and smacking Virginia around. When she wasn't, Mrs. Crumplebottom would take over and whack Virginia with her purse. With all my hard work, I only got a "great" date out of it, but I guess I can consider myself lucky. LOL

Tyson and Lola still had a dream date, even though they each got hit with the Crumple's purse. The secret is to walk away from the interfering old busybody.

She is funny, though.
