Rose Dawson sat at Midlnight Flows with her mini-tape recorder in her purse, waiting for the Raven-haired beauty who was sashaying into the club. She felt the odd sensation of excitement mixed with terror watching her enter. At one point and time, this creature had been Doctor Tina Jerry, respected cheif-of-staff, wife, and mother. Now, she's Countess Tina Warner, Vampire.
Tina and Rose had always been friends. They had known each other in college, and both had attended the other's weddings. Rose was now an old woman, but Tina never looked younger, more beautiful.
Now that Rose was done having children, she had wanted to persue her passion for the written word. She had mentioned this to Tina at a get-together, and Tina had suggested that Rose write her biography. "No one would believe it. You can market it as a work of fiction," Tina had said, sounding a bit sad.
Rose jumped on the chance. It was not for lack of imagination that she wanted to write someone else's story: it was pure curiosity. So much of Tina's life was a mystery, even to her closest friends and family. Rose just wanted to know: How does a high-standing, intelligent member of society become the mistress of evil?
They greeted each other with a hug and then sat down. "Red wine," Tina ordered from the waitress, to Rose's surprise.
"Unlike the vampires you see in the movies, we do eat and drink pretty much anything we like," Tina explained, smiling to show her fangs.
"What does being a vampire do for you?"
"Well, for starters, we don't age. We don't need as much as mortals in the way of food, rest, comfort, that sort of thing. We can transform into bats if we wish. But, we cannot go out into the sunlight. Sunlight is a quick, painful death to vampires." Tina took a sip of wine and said, quitely. "That's what happened to Barthalamew."
"Bart? You're 1st husband?" Rose's interest was piqued.
"Ahh, how I loved that man. We had a passionate relationship from the very beginning. We took our time getting married. I even left him at the alter, remember?" Tina chuckled, then continued. "He had a fiery temper, though. Heard about me flirting casually with Elijah Warner after work one night, and the marriage was over. He walked out when little Kyle was only a toddler. I was devastated."
"I remember all that. I believe that you married Elijah, didn't you?"
Tina smiled a wry smile. "That comes later in the story, my dear. You're jumping ahead of yourself."
"I'm sorry. Please continue."
"From what I've heard in the Vampire Community, Barthalomew began seing a vampire after he left us. Countess Lisa, I do believe. She fell madly in love with him and wanted him for her companion. We vampires can be, ah, impetuous, at times. She bit him and then took him upstairs in his new mansion. Afterwards, she left just before dawn." Tina shook her head. "Bart was not the most brilliant of the light bulbs. He decided to try swimming during the afternoon, and wound up getting too tanned, so to speak."
"How did it happen to you? Becoming a vampire?" Rose asked.
"Ahhh, my dear, that is an interesting story. Soon after Bart's experience, I started wanting, no, dreaming of being a vampire. I was called to it. I tried to fight it. I mean, how does someone who saves lives for a living, who has two young sons to raise, make such a drastic change in lifestyle?"
Rose raised an eyebrow but remained silent. She felt that becoming a vampire was much more than just a "lifestyle change."
"Then it happened to Elijah. Elijah and I have also been friends since college. Elijah talked about vampires non-stop. He had met Count Jay downtown, had befriended him. We discussed our interest at length and began haunting known vampire haunts after work, watching them. We felt they were beautiful, powerful. And, soon, Count Jay shared his "dark gift" as it's been called, with Elijah."
Rose was finding it harder to remain impartial. Because her own husband, Jack, was a doctor on staff with both Tina and Elijah, they were very closesly aquainted with their families and what had happened to them. Soon after Elijah's transformation, his sweet, kind wife Harriet had died mysteriously, and he had remarried Tina soon after.
"Ahh, yes, Harriet." Tina smiled.
Rose gasped, surprised. "Can you read minds, as well."
"Yes, I can. Did I forget to mention that?" Tina smiled devilishly. "Vampirism had nothing to do with Harriet's demise. She had a cooking accident, pure and simple. It's all right now: I hear that she was resurected and is happilly living with her daughter."
Rose nodded. She had seen Harriet recently. Harriet was very different since her death and re-birth. She seemed weak, muddled, introverted. Just not the same.
"Anyway, Elijah shared the dark gift with me, and we were married. Our daughter Arwen Grace was born soon after. Believe it or not, Vampires can have children."
"But Arwen is not a vampire?"
"No. She must choose vampirism, when she is old enough. If she wishes."
"What's it like being a vampire? What do you do? How do you spend your days?"
"Ahhh, my dear Rose, the sun will be up soon. We spend our days sleeping." Tina took one final sip of her wine and sat the glass down. "I must flee. Will you meet me tomorrow night? Here again?"
"I will," Rose agreed uneasilly.
"Until tomorrow night, my dear," Tina threw some simoleons on the table to cover both women's drinks and hurried out of the club.
