I thought we should have a thread just to talk about our day, share whatever we want, no rules, nothing too trivial. If you want to tell us you shaved your legs (or not) go right ahead. :p

So, we're sitting around talking the other day and we were discussing the fact that my husband and I, while quite alike in many regards, have at least one major difference: he gets addicted to things, and I don't. You can't leave cigarettes, soda or potato chips lying around if he's home because they'll be gone. He can't have just one.

He used to smoke, I made him quit. I can smoke a cigarette or six and then not smoke ever again. I only do it when I'm feeling naughty. I smoked some in college, never got addicted.

So I was saying how I never get addicted to things and my daughter pipes up and says, "You're addicted to the sims."

Out of the mouths of babes. :o

I haven't been having a very good, well, month. They didn't even give us time to transition between the easy, almost homework-free life of a 6th grader to the much more stressful, hard-as-crap life of a 7th grader before they just dumped it all on us! As if that weren't enough, I've been having a horrible headache for a while now, especially in the afternoon when I start to feel drowsy (I took a lot of naps when I was younger  ) *Sigh*...At least I have Sims 2 to make me feel better. I was telling my mom about some things that were bothering me a while ago, and she said, "It's that game you're always playing, Sims whatever. It makes your brain think too much, and then you get a headache!" Psh, sure. :p

I got a second job. Nothing exciting, just at an outdoor and camping store. My 3 days a week at the high school library weren't paying the bills. On a plus, we've just had school holidays, so while still getting paid for the library I was able to work extra shifts and get even more money. I treated myself to Nightlife, cuz I've been wanting that for a while now, but never been able to afford it. Next it's a new video card...:D

I can smoke a cigarette or six and then not smoke ever again. I only do it when I'm feeling naughty. I smoked some in college, never got addicted.

I'm the same way. I've had stressful days/weeks at work, where for about a week I'll smoke. Then I quite for a couple months. Never had a problem quiting. I smoked for about 5 months strait at one point, about a pack every 3-4 days, and then quite and didn't have an issue with wanting one again. However, for the sake of our younger ones, I do not recomend this to anyone! Smoking is bad.

Brandon however is just like your husband...one chip! Ha! Same with pop and cigarettes as well. He's not able to only have one. He doesn't smoke either now, but for a while we both were. He had a hard time quiting. I never did.

So I was saying how I never get addicted to things and my daughter pipes up and says, "You're addicted to the sims."

LOL, way to funny. I'd have to say it is my one addiction as well...well...that and WorldSims!

I did a makeover on two of the sim college boys with those stupid bowl haircuts. They were walking by Avery's house and I thought, Oh, no, honey, that won't do at all.

So I bought her a beauty chair and she made them over on the spot. They're both really cute now, though one is still stuck with the name Rodney.

I'll try to remember to post pictures.

Yeah, WorldSims too ... I'm addicted to this site, too. Sigh. I've really got to focus on something non-sim but this is just so much fun.

Well, doesn't look like I can go Blackpool after all.

There's a guy in our class called Singy, and him and I used to fight like cat and dog. We still do sometimes. It's Katie's birthday on Tuesday, so we were going to Blackpool for the day tomorrow. So everyone was talking about it this morning in class, because we're all really excited, and someone suggested that some of theguys come. Katie at first was like 'Noooo!' when they mentioned Singy, and I asked her was he coming and she said no. So I said, 'Well, just to let you know, that's good because if he came I wouldn't go.' Everyone knows about us. And she said 'Okay...' looking a bit unsure. I said 'Seriously if I get at yours tomorrow and he's there I'm going home.' and she said 'Okay, don't worry, he isn't coming.' I didn't want to ruin her birthday because I know exactly what he's like - he'll try and be funny by humiliating me, and I'll end up arguing and on my own in the middle of Blackpool. Not a good birthday celebration for Katie. So I got on MSN before happy happy happy, and she says 'Singy, Tom and lewis are all coming tomorrow, you know.' so I told her that if he starts tomorrow I don't care I'll get a train on my own home, after she went mad when I said I was coming at all. Later on I told my Mum Singy was coming, and she went MAD. so I had to ring up Katie an say I couldn't come, with my Mum shouting 'He's a ****head, Emma! I don't care you're not going!' in the background. I totally agree with her, but I still think I could have gone. We can be civil.

So right now Katie may be telling Singy he can't come, or being presurrised into ditching me instead.

I also nearly hit an old lady today. I was helping out at an OAP free diner and was serving, and as I went to set the plate down the old lady moved her head down as she moved to pick up her bag. She nearly got her mash, steak, peas carrots and gravy on her face.

The sun came out yesterday for the first time in an aeon and it seemd willing to stick around for a bit so I ventured out on foot to explore the canal banks right next to where I live. I've been here for almost 8 months and although the wate is barely 30 yards from my back door I haven't ventured out to explore the tow-path (note to non Brits - UK inland waterways were built in 18th century when barges (7 feet wide and 70 feet long - narrow on purpose cos the UK is hilly so canals need lots of locks and locks need lots of water) were towed along by horses ... hence tow-path :)

Anyway. Had a nice brisk and bracing 45 minute walk that took in around a mile and half of the Stourbridge Locks section of the Dudley Canal. Lots of Canada Geese, ducks and one pair of coots (or maybe they were moorhens ) Also spot a useful ladder and quite a few empty plastic 2 litre pop bottles ... ah the joys of the urban landscape :p

Anyway, glad I went. Got up this morning and it was raining ... a lot. :(

Fell about laughing. Ems you're a gem. It takes most, so-called carers, years of training before they can treat their elderly charges with such reckless abandon ... :p ... looks like you've found a vocation.

As for Blackpool ... trust me. It's a dump ... especially in March. It'' be freezing cold, it'll deffo rain all day and all the decent places will still be shut up waiting for Easter. No-one goes to Blackpool in March! Not even the people who live there

[For those who do not know, Blackpool is like Las Vegas only without the glitz and the razzamatazz and a lot more wind and rain, especially the wind and the rain ... they have a saying there: "if you can't see the end of the pier, it's raining; if you can see it, it's about to start raining" :p]

Lol - I know, but I mean, I wasn't bothered about that. I just wanted to spend time with my frieds. On Monday everyone will be discussing it - and in a few months, it'll be 'Look what I found last night! The pictures of us all in Blackpool! OMG, do you remember when we all got soaking?'

It just seems like I'm geting left out more and more with them these days. Yeah, someone might say well then, they're obviously not your friends, but right now they're what I have.

So how come sims pictures need approval?

I thought it was just pictures of people's cats and dogs that had to be approved.

As for what's new in my life. Nottin. Except we've hired a painter. All the walls around here are either pastel blue or beige (yawn.) I think we'll go with different pastels. Just for a change. :p

For those wondering why we don't just paint the place ourselves--we're OLD. That's why.

HEY! The pictues just got approved. I'm going to go take a closer look.

Just looked. Mucho improved, those guys.

Well, it's a typical late Winter morning, with piles of snow still hanging about like so much dirty laundry...remnants of the 19 inches we had two weeks ago. Cloudy and a little dreary, but the temps should reach the 40s (farenheit), so we should loose more of the snow cover.

And today is the day a few of us Minnesotans will be gathering to meet in person! How lovely it will be to chat with other Simmers - people who do not look at you strangely when you try to explain to them how you need to get the next generation through college, or how your Sim was abducted by aliens, and is now pregnant with his first child...What a freeing experience this will be!:)

I'm so excited about this. Meeting new friends is always fun, and to have this opportunity to talk about all this is wonderful. Are you other two experiencing any flax from your husbands about this? Brandon rolled his eyes at me at first, but he actually does think it's cool we're meeting. Gets him off the hook from hearing all my stories about my sims.

Well, my roommate thinks I'm being a total geek - but in a good way! She was also comforted by the fact that some friends of ours turned out to be mutual friends of Surprised_by_Witches - That means it is less likely that I am off to meet a couple of Axe Murderers! Heh. Little do you know.

I had fun, guys. I hope you did too. I loved seeing your houses, Sacharissa. For those of you who didn't know this, she's a talented sims architect, and lucky her, she can carry them with her wherever she goes. Maybe we'll get lucky and she'll offer them up for download (dibs on the urban space!).

It was fun getting to show my sims in person. I gave a tour of the ruined mansion where Spike and London live. It was fun getting to talk about my sims with people who already "knew" them. And, thanks for being so nice about my daughter and her cousin wanting to show you their sim creations as well.

It's a small world, isn't it? So weird that we already knew some of the same people. Or maybe not so weird, since we live in the same area of town.

To answer your question, Shana, I guess I'm lucky in that I have a husband who's interested in what I'm interested in. I've already told him about my sims quite a bit. He laughs at me a little but he likes hearing what Max and Spike and Porter are up to, and he helps design some of my characters. He was quite opinionated about what David Sullivan should look like, LOL.

Sorry you didn't get to meet him. Ah, the glamorous nocturnal life of a baker.

It was really fun getting to tour Porta de Luca, and "meeting" Spike and London in person! I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with my fellow Simmers. How fabulous to get together with old friends we've just met and discuss life in Simsville - and life in Minnesota...Let's do it again!

And thanks for the kind words, SBW! I was inspired to go home and try to recreate a couple of the lovely cottages on your street! While they are not exact replicas, I think that they would fit nicely into the style of your neighborhood.

Me, too. It's a hoot and a half. Hard to believe you're 12 sometimes, girl.

Today I've got work to do and I'm slacking off talking to y'all. Can you say, girl in need of a vacation?

My daughter wants to join this site. I'm not sure we can do two accounts from the same machine, though she could use her daddy's email account (or get her own yahoo one).

I'm a little worried. I think some of the content (especially my story!!!) is too adult for her. But she's determined.

I know you all will be very nice to her, so no worries there. If she has to join a site I'm glad she wants to be on one I moderate.

So, if we can figure it out, coming soon: Witch Baby. (Doubt she'll use that name, I just thought it would be cute.)

I don't see anything inappropriate in SBW's stories ... or any of the others for that matter. LOL reminds of a couple of stories. An englishman was in NYC and needed some batteries for his electric shaver (razor?) He asked at 2 or 3 stores and was met blank expressions and denial that such stuff could be bought anywhere. Frustrated he was repeating himself at yeat another store counter when an impatient New Yorker waiting behind him leaned over and snapped, "Badda-rizz! The guy wants some badda-rizz!"

Years ago I was having a snack in a 'greasy spoon cafe' (the nearest equivalent would be a cheap diner) when a West Indian gentleman came in asked for "Two Egg an' Two Ast"

The girl serving looked mightly perplexed. She was sure that she had no asts in the freezer but the old gentleman looked so sweet and kind she didn't want to let him down. She asked him to repeat himself hoping a second turn around the block might bring clarification. I heard him distinctly, cos he raised his voice as though humoring a child.

"Two egg 'n two ast," he said plaintiffly. The emphasis was very clear. I suspected I knew what it was he wanted but another lady came in at that moment and she had also heard the conclusion of the exchange. With a smug expression she said, "he wants two eggs and toast!"

LOL, Mirelly.

I once spent an hour in Sainsbury's trying to find thumbtacks. I finally asked someone and they looked at me strangely, so I described what I wanted and she said, "Oh, you want Drawing Pins!" Only she pronounced them "Drawring Pins."

Whew. I thought I'd never find them. I think she thought I was looking for some kind of medieval torture device. Talk, or I'll use the thumbtacks on you!

If you have a moment, can you answer my question?er...well...I've just been using sims I created in Body Shop. I've used the same sim sometimes over and over.

In other words, I'm sorry to say, I haven't cloned an NPC, townie or sim born in game. (Although it occurred to me you could package one for upload then set him up in a new neighborhood. Haven't tried it.)

But, the interesting thing is this--which you may have already discovered about Body Shop--if I choose, for example, Errol, and then just hit the symbol for female, I get his mother. :D If instead, when I have Errol there, I choose the symbol for the child, I get Errol as a child. I thought that was pretty cool when I discovered how it worked. Actually, once I had Errol created in Body Shop, the other tricks worked just fine in the game's Create a Family (or Sim or whatever.)

Anyway, if you were looking for something more scientific and clever I'm afraid I was just pulling the wool over everybody's eyes. :o

I went to a very nice wedding today. Two "kids" that I've known since they were knee high tied the knot and boy does that make feel old. Except it was wonderful seeing so many good friends. and the ceremony was funny and sweet with a chinese theme. lots of good talk, good food and nice memories. one feature that was very clever was instead of having a recieving line was the bride and groom came back in after the recessional (which was done to the theme of StarWars) and dismissed each row, greeting each guest as they did.

They may use a little book called a wedding planner, but if you mean the actual person, the wedding planner, that's mostly for rich folks.

No one I know has ever used one.

SuiteMichelle, that sounds like a fun wedding. I like it when people get married in a way that reflects their personalities. We had Leonard Cohen songs at ours (played on the accordion by a talented friend).

My baby sister's getting married in July. She wants my daughter and me to be in the ceremony. My daughter is very excited. She gets to wear fairy wings.

The Setting: A college classroom my Senior year. My roommate and I are ready to give our presentation on Lord Byron's poetry. My roommate is sitting at the table when I come into the room holding a bag. My roommate begins, in her best Monty-Python-Old-Woman voice...Roommate: Hello Mrs. Smoker.
Me: Hello Mrs. Non-Smoker.
Roommate: Been shopping?
Me: No - I've been shopping!

We then proceeded a Monty-python-esque discussion regarding Lord Byron, which eventually ended up with my roommate wearing Christmas-Lights on her head - plugged in and blinking, of course! (She was a looney! She needed a new brain!), and me wearing a pair of alien antenae (the economy model brain).

I later discovered that a friend of mine was walking down the hall and discovered a swarm of Freshmen peering into the class wondering just WHAT the class was! She looked in, saw me and my roommate, and said:Hmmm - Looks like Nineteenth Century British Lit!

I've often wondered how many of those Freshies signed up for that class the next year! ;)

PS - We both got an "A" for the class!:D

I had a call from the painters this morning (9:30 am). They're showing up Monday morning around 7:30 am. I'm going to have to disconnect my computer from the internet and move it to the basement, out of the way of dripping paint. I'll be able to plug it in to play sims (me and the spiders) but I'll be off line. :( Obviously (as I am now) I can check in with Worldsims while at work but only for a quick moment now and then. Bummer. My husband wants huge amounts of painting done, inside and out. I'm going to try to get my computer room done first, or at least early in the job. :o

I wrote another chapter for Ironsides last night but didn't have time to put it up yet. They still haven't gone to the cemetery yet. I'm hoping I can get them there before Sunday.

This is so stressful. I don't mind living with peeling paint--it adds something homey to the atmosphere--but my husband really doesn't like it.

I used to do all my own painting. Did it for years. But my husband has continuing problems with his shoulders. He had an MRI recently and the doctor has recommended physical therapy to relieve some problem or other with the 'rotator cuff' in his left shoulder. And some other problem with a disc in his neck affects his right shoulder. :( Seems like he's always hurting somewhere, poor guy.

And he's one of those types who'd take the paint brush away from me in order to do it 'right' if I were to start in on it myself. So if he's willing to pay for it I'm not going to complain. To him, anyway. I'll complain freely and frequently around here, if y'all can stand it. :D

LMAO Shana but over here in Britland we have a different slant on popcorn. Butter and salt is just not enough. We like it with butterscotch, toffee anything incredibly sticky and vanilla is an essential ingredient for almost everything.

All of which put me in mind of a story about an American mother driving home with her young daughter after visiting with friends. The friends had also been entertaing a relative of theirs who was visiting the US from the UK. The little girl was inquisitive and asked the sort of questions that only little kids can come up with. "What do the people in England eat, Mommy?" she asked at one point. "Same as us mostly," the mother replied. "'cept all their food is wrapped up in pastry." (She'd gotten that piece of intelligence from her father who'd learned it the hard way ... in the pubs of southern England while waiting to invade Europe during WW2.)

Man - I'd forgotten that! I remember when I was going to school in England, my friend and I were on a home-stay with a lovely couple (Anne and Peter) in Birmingham.

Well they'd invited a bunch of college students over to meet us one Sunday evening, so Marilyn and I made them some popcorn - American Style - with butter and salt. They politely ate some, but Anne told us later, that as soon as Marilyn and I had left the room, all of the Brit students were reaching for the Sugar Bowl! Well, I said there is a reason why I am not allowed in the kitchen. Here's another.

I had three friends to stay over last night - Katie, Eileen and Channie (pronounce it like Shannie - it's actually Chantelle, but Channie is her nickname). Eileen is MAD, Channie is a blonde version of Eileen, and Katie a little quieter but still just as fun. So we had fun, did the usual girly stuff. And then this morning - well, it was more like two in the afternoon - Eileen got hungry. Big surprise. So she moaned at me until I said yes, as long as she watched what she was going and was careful, she could cook the ready made pasta thing she had brought on the hob.

So I made myself toast (safe and yummy - and for once not burnt) while Eileen faffed around making the pasta sauce. I went back upstairs where Channie was absorbed in the computer and Katie was in the shower. I sat down to watch Friends with my scrummy toast in my bombsite of a bedroom. Eileen came upstairs and sat down on the fold out couch (which was at the time a bed lol) and I said reminded her to keep an eye on the sauce, to which she told me it would be okay - it would be a few minutes yet. After 2 minutes or so (I don't remember, I was pretty absorbed in Friends) (and my toast) she went off back to the kitchen. A minute later I thought 'something isn't right here' and a split second later the fire alarm goes off.

Now our fire alarm is pretty weird. It goes (really shrill) beep; beep; beep; and then this womans voice goes 'fire - fire' then it goes beep; beep; beep again. So I ran downstairs to find the place filled with smoke and Eileen laughing her head off at the fire alarm. It turns out the sauce boiled over and now there are burn marks on the hob. We spent 2 hours with the Mr Muscle. It actually really was fun!

They want to stay again tomorrow night. Yay! But I haven't spoken to my Mum yet. Going to stay up tonight because she's out with some friends for their annual curry so I'll catch her when she gets in. Hehehe!

:p Your daughter does have a beautiful name. Is it a family name?

No, not a family name. Actually found it in one of those baby name books. Moselle is the feminine form of Moses. It is also a river in Germany I think, where they make Moselle wine.

It means "taken from the water" Her middle name is Renee, which means reborn.

Originally we had chosen Lianna, but when she was born she just fit Moselle better.

Maybe I should package Errol and Harcourt, or Alka. Or Granddad. They're in the body shop -- no personalities or friends, just empty-headed sims. :p

Actually, I think Harcourt's one of the Maxis supplied models in the CAS window although I've saved him in body shop now because I often forget what color eyes I've given them :o . I just made a couple of minor adjustments; skintone, eyes, etc. The same with Alka.

I have Chee-z's Franz sim, although it's just the form, not the substance. ;) . I think he'd look cool as an overweight shop owner. Selling toys is what I'm thinking but haven't acted on it yet.

surprised_by_witches
04-13-2006, 09:58 AM
There's a bartender who looks a lot like Errol. In my game he's Dominique Zaidi or something like that. Very exotic name for a guy with a mug like that. Olivia made friends with him. I liked his face because he reminded me of Errol, but I've learned my lesson about fraternizing with bartenders (once you do, it seems like they work freakin' EVERYWHERE ... you try cheating on one sometime).

I may have to incorporate him somehow anyway ...

And, Lynet, you want people to actually want to buy toys, right? I think Franz would make me run in the other direction ...

Lynet
04-13-2006, 10:27 AM
Errol is a creation dating back to when I first got the game and discovered movie making. I was out to create organized crime types and he shows up as a bad guy (a killer) in my unfinished movie (to be found on Pharaohfarrow.com but only if you have the patience, because they are big files, and I think the music files might have gotten corrupted, too. )

Later on (much later) I discovered Helaene's skin tones, and lots of hair and clothes downloads from all over. I recycled Errol with new skin and hair.

Actually, Granddad is also a recycled gangster from the movie. As well as Duke Sidewalker.

I just love their faces.

However, I can easily believe you may have seen a similar guy in the game because I'm sure that although I used body shop I probably went through the various Maxis made models and used one to modify, although much more extensively than with Harcourt and Alka. Maxis models don't look quite mean enough for gangster types. :bandit:

(This is a slow day at work. Plenty to do, but it bores me.)

And, Lynet, you want people to actually want to buy toys, right? I think Franz would make me run in the other direction ...It could be so much fun. :p

Hope y'all had a Happy Easter too! Turned out to be a lovely afternoon here - and I discovered scads of violets all over my yard! What a lovely easter surprise! (I know - some people would just think they were weeds! But I LOVE the happly little flowers and was thrilled to see them popping up!)

I haven't yet played around with recoloring stuff - and I don't have enough black clothes for my Sims! Maybe the next time we Minnesotans get together, you can have a little tutorial! (Yes, I'm assuming we will get together again - the last time was so much fun!)

Yes, let's get together! When?

Recoloring stuff to black is easy, LOL. Actually, recoloring anything to most colors is easy. It's adding patterns that gets tricky, or trying to make something that's dark, white. That can be problematic ...

I've been meaning to check out the tutorial on SageSims. She walks you through making shadows, wrinkles, etc., on clothing, all things I don't know how to do, yet.

Perhaps I should try that before we meet!

If we are talking weekends, April 29th/30th or May 6th/7th works for me...

Week nights, probably nothing until after May 7th...I've got some looming deadlines at work, so I'm anticipating late nights and early mornings! ("Less Simming and WorldSims" she pouted...)

When I recolor things with patterns (search on google for the website of a fabric shop--http://www.thefabricshop.com.au/Default.htm I use that one) I really don't care if the patterns connect between both sides of the clothes. I just pretend it's the seam. :p

Sacharissa and Shana, Witch Baby's going to a birthday party this coming Saturday (the 29th) from 1:30 - 5:30. I'll see if hubby unit wants to have a date or not. It's during his bedtime hours so he may just want to sleep.

Clarification please - If you really mean Saturday the 29th (which is a week from Saturday) then Yes - that would work out fine for me.

If, however, you really do mean this coming Saturday (the 22nd), then no, that would not work for me. It is Book Club weekend - at MY house, which means that I will be grocery shopping, cooking and cleaning, and then hosting...(But this is why we have people over, isn't it -- So that we clean? I am so befuddled. I think the party is this Saturday, but then I thought this Saturday was the 29th. It could be the 22nd. I don't know! If it isn't I'll see if I can find her a playdate.

My brain's not working this week. I've got too much on my mind I guess. Hamster still isn't doing well, car is having problems (it's an old car), tons of doctor type appointments I've been putting off, and I paid the library for a CD that wasn't stolen after all.

Be glad you're not in my brain. It's a confusing little place.

Well it looks like we found a car! 1998 Ford Taurus, 68000 miles, excellent condition, $4300.00. It has a moon roof!!!!! It seriously is in beautiful shape! It's maroon in color, and excellent interior and exterior. It's in the shape of a car that is a 2002 year vs. 1998.

I'm excited. Brandon is going to look at it again with me tomorrow, so far only I've seen it. I did put $200.00 down on it for them to hold it for me. So as long as Brandon likes it, we're getting it. Now I have to wait for the loan to go through. If it doesn't I do have a line of credit I can use, but the loan is cheaper. *does a little dance* I'm really excited about this car!

And, talk about a sign that this was going to be it, when I was walking out to my current car, someone stopped me and told me they were VERY interested in checking out my car tomorrow, even with the high miles and defects it has! So it's possible that my old car sells tomorrow and I get a new one tomorrow as well! Wouldn't that be just awesome!

So I have tried several times tonight to upload one picture to the Worldsims Gallery without success. It seems to lock up on a blank white screen. So I'm going to try to attach it here. It's jst a picture of some flowers on one of the cherry trees.

I guess it will need to be 'approved' before anyone can see it.

If I can figure out again how to get pictures up in the Gallery I'll add a couple more of the cherry trees. They're beautiful. And way too big for one picture, unfortunately, although I tried and tried to find an angle that fit all four of them into one shot.

I am now! Meet my new car! Isn't she pretty! I need a good name for her still.

Get this story though, so apparently this car has an alarm on it, or at least a panic button, my keyless entry remote doesn't have the symbols on it, only numbers. Somehow I managed to turn the alarm on at my parents at 10pm! Yikes! My parents live in a really quite neighborhood about a half an hour out of the twin cities. Not a whole lot happening...our neighbors lights were turning on. Anyway, we could NOT get the alarm to go off..3 straight minutes of the darn car beeping at us, and the keyless remote wouldn't shut it off! Not even turning the car on with the key worked! My dad ended up disconnecting the battery! It's fine now, but for the meantime I'm not using the keyless thing till we can figure that one out.

Anyway, here are some pictures of my new baby safe in her parking spot in our garage!

Well the plates, which aren't on the car yet because I am waiting for the tab stickers from the dealer are: NSL 500. My thoughts immediately: No Speed Limit, 500 miles per hour!!! Hehe, but its not really a name.

And I'm sorry SBW. My attachement options doesn't work anymore, which is why I have been posting my pictures right in the thread. Kind of sucks. Quick posting to say: My car's name is Nico, as in the Velvet Underground. She used to be cute and sassy but she's got a few years on her now. I've had her 14 years and she's a little rusty and tired but runs great.

Only 130,000 miles on her, and she's been to Savannah, Georgia and back, as well as one trip to Granville Ohio and several to Duluth and other parts north and to Appleton, Wisconsin to visit the parental units.

We, um, don't drive much.

We broke down in McGregor, Minnesota once (nicest place on earth to break down, BTW) and when the tow truck came he asked how many miles we had on the car. I told him and he said he didn't think their mechanic had any parts that new. I said, "It's a 92."

He looked at me like, "Who ARE you people?"

LOL. I guess in McGregor people drive to the video store, even if it's next door. We live in the city, so we walk most places.

Sky King? I got his autograph once! It was like 100 years ago, when the circus came to town - he was part of the circus. Can't remember what he did in the circus, but my sister made me go and get his autograph, 'cause she remembered him from the TV show.

As for my car - His name was Strauss, the Waltz King - named so, because he was a little Geo Metro with a 3-cylinder engine. (Ah one-two-three, one-two-three...) Stauss served me well for 14 years, until he finally gave up the ghost - the day before Christmas Eve - somewhere in Iowa while I was on my way to Oklahoma for Christmas! It is a long, eventful tale, but ends up with Stauss (or more exactly, what's left of Strauss) currently lying in my Garage, waiting until I can figure out what to do with an engineless car...

Yay! Another chapter of the Zephyr Family Legacy! Very funny stuff!!! :D (There, SBW - Now you're not talking to yourself anymore!)

You really want a place in my box of heads ... I mean jewelery, don't you Babe. (Sharpens axe.)

I'm starting to feel better, which means I should have story updates soon. In case anyone was wondering. :p

Have you noticed I'm addicted to ellipses? What's up with that?

Ooops ... :o I think you caught the ellipsis thang from moi ... well maybe not ... but I've been overusing the old dot dot dot ever since I found out it actually had a name. Before that I would just machine gun a few, or a lot, of period points in random places in most of my casual scribblings. I had a terribly poor standard of education in languages in school; my natural talents -- such as they were -- had more to do with taking dead critters apart to see what they were made of ... (it was mostly icky, sticky, stinky stuff but there's no accounting for the tastes of adolescence, is there ...?) So I came to discover the finer points of grammar and punctuation late in life. My father was a printer, an old fashioned one who could set type and arcane stuff like that. He'd served a long apprenticeship in order to qualify and when he died, I inherited some of his books. One was a book that I still think should be on every kid's bookshelf. It was the most complete grammar text I have ever seen. It explained all the rules far better than any other crammer I ever saw ... it also introduced me to points of ellipsis and my literary ramblings have, ever since, been as dotty as their author ....

I thought ellipses were ovals, and thats why i didn't reply. I thought it was a bit strange you were addicted to ellipses - and how would we notice?

Just smile and nod, guys. :p

Wow, that's what they're called? I use them all the time.

And thanks, guys! I thought it'd be harder for me to kill sims off, but it turns out I don't even feel an ounce of guilt. Perhaps that's not a good thing.

I feel okay after though! :D

LOL Me too. I just offed Komei Tellerman cos he kicked over the trash can of a new couple who'd just moved in. Normally I am quite sanguine about such shenanigans but honestly! They didn't even know the nasty townie; besides he was sporting a silly face-paint job after a makeover mishap and had so far resisted all attempts to be repaired. He took so long to die that I got bored and had to intervene with some boolpropery

My favorite grammar book, and one which I enthusiastically recommend to my friends, is Karen Elizabeth Gordon’s The Transitive Vampire: A Handbook of Grammar for the Innocent, the Eager and the Doomed.

It is one of the most amusing books I’ve ever read – And it really does teach you grammar! Here are a couple of examples the book uses to illustrate Subjective Complements:

The tea party remains a domestic farce with passions kept on a leash.

The famous courtesan, Mog Cinders, was an accomplished lepidopterist, too.

And another example using Collective Nouns:

The entourage lolling about in the lobby were hanging out their tongues. (Apparently, this was an existential act for each or them.)

Ms. Gordon’s books (she has several) actually make grammar fun!:D

LOL at all of you guys. You crack me up.

Thanks for the laugh.

Ovals. Sheesh.

Mirelly
04-28-2006, 10:30 AM
Striclty speaking ovals are egg-shaped and rather less susceptible to mathematical definition in comparison to an ellipse which is a circle gone wrong in that it has two foci instead of the usual one ... though why a greek word for incompleteness should have been chosen is beyond me ... but then I'm the kind of person who still worries about whether the colour orange was defined before or after the fruit ... also when did flies first start buzzing because if they have always buzzed wouldn't it have been more sensible to call them buzzes? :o

LOL Witch-momma ... over here the drugs are a compulsory part of life under Mein Fuhrer, Herr Blair. We're electing local government officials next week and I can't decide between voting for my incumbent local rep for whom I did not vote previously due to not living here four years ago and who is not a member of the faction I normally support but who has a nice face and who sent me very nicely worded and well punctuated article of literary mendicancy <deep intake of breath> and a chinless geek whose propaganda looks as though it was written by the reception class (K) of the local primary school and who -- according to his photgraph -- looks like the kind of person who tries to put his elbow in his ear everytime he hears that old chestnut concerning the impossibility of the same <gasp turning red in the face> or else a fence-sitting twirp who cannot decide if he's Arthur or Martha, the sort of chap who doesn't know whether he's with the Co-op or the Home and Colonial ....

And you thought ellipses were for cutting sentences short :p

I have loads. She sold them to me. I think. I don't know what I'm talking about.

If I didn't need 'em before, I need them now. Laffed so much the cat took off from my lap using all her crampons for traction ... I'll be smelling of tea tree oil for a week now! Thanks a bunch! :p

on the mend thanks for keeping me company... probably should have gone in today but since I had doctor's "permission" to play hooky one more day did so... hey this is the most I've missed in four years they really shouldn't tie knots in their shorts about it. anyway it's been 24 hours since I've had a headache or a fever so I think I'll live. you all are so amusing and clever and wise. guess I'll stick around.

also when did flies first start buzzing because if they have always buzzed wouldn't it have been more sensible to call them buzzes? :o

I thought their flying caused the buzzing... does that help?

I've always wondered why cookies are called cookies, when we bake them! I say we boycott the word cookie, and say bakies from now on!

alliekat
04-28-2006, 03:52 PM
Down south we really only call them biscuits so I never say cookie anyway :p . Interestind theory though.

The sperm whale thought of names for a few things, then he died. I don't think he got to flies or cookies though.

Did he think of his own name, too? Cause, eeeew.

Heh. Bakies. I love it. I told my husband that one and he agreed with you, 123. He's a professional baker. He said "I wish I had some bakies right now."

LOL at Mirelly. Been there myself. My cat, who is ancient, missed my leg in a mighty leap and hung from my bare leg with her little crampons firmly embedded. Twice. I was thinking of writing an essay called "The holes in my leg, or why I no longer love my cat."

I've got scars. Now when she looks like she's thinking of leaping I help her up. Safer that way.

Now, back to my sims. Working on getting all those little simmies to child stage. And whew, little Ella Hourvitz turned out cuter than could reasonably be expected from her toddler appearance.

So much fun to catch up on this thread. Hope Michelle and SBW are feeling better. Those colds sound depressing. Michelle, that avatar is hysterical--a cat in a bathing suit?

I know the attachment will take a day or two for approval. It's just a goofy picture from an Amsterdam canal boat ride.

Lynet

As for the trip, I wish we'd had more time in Holland. Our plane left a day late and although it was orginally going to be a one-stop in Iceland before getting to Amsterdam the delay added another stop--Heathrow in London. I adore London, really, but Heathrow doesn't work well as a connection--way too big. Then, naturally, all the mix up resulted in lost luggage. It finally arrived a day later than we did, and it arrived on two separate planes, which meant two different hunting grounds--a storage room and then Baggage Belt #10. Ah, well, everyone's got travel stories and this one wasn't too bad.

We spent one entire day riding the canal boat bus round and round in Amsterdam, taking it all in. We spent another day in Den Haag (The Hague) just walking through the streets in the vicinity of the train station. Friday we went to the Rijksmuseum and then, because it was quite cold out and we were so tired, too a movie with my son. So funny because the movies they list out in front aren't necessarily showing. I asked the ticket lady when the Tom Cruise movie started, thinking she'd say 3 pm and she said 'next Friday.' So we saw Ice Age 2. Very cute :D. (The only other one showing was Scary Movie 4 :yuck:)

I was fascinated by the houseboat living and took a number of pictures of that. The public transportation is so convenient. I wish we'd had more time to see areas outside the two cities, even more of the cities. We walked alot. Everyone was setting up for the queen's birthday celebration on Saturday. Lots of people on the streets. Bicycles everywhere, ringing their bells when we blocked the path :o. We even saw a multilevel parking garage for bicycles and it was jam packed. Cars park within inches of the canals--I watched a guy parallel park, the driver's side facing the canal with maybe a foot of room. He got out so nonchalant and walked around to the street. I was holding my breath.

I was disappointed we didn't get to see more. My husband loved it, though. He likes just walking the streets of a city, soaking it all up.

Welcome back, Lynet! Sorry you lost a precious day of vacation. I sounds like still managed to have a fabulous time, though! Waiting to see your pics, once thery're approved.

No kidding. Scary guy torturing our beloved Errol, and you run off to Holland? You heartless creature, you.

I love Europe! Wish I could go more often. I haven't been there since my honeymoon, which we actually took two years after we got married (had to save up first).

My Great-Aunt Florence died at the ripe old age of 93 and left me a few thousand dollars. We used it, and our savings, to go to Florence, Italy.

I thought that was fitting, somehow.

But, je sigh. Green with envy. Someday I'll have the means to go again ... in the meantime, I can look at your pictures.

If they ever get approved.

Lynet

I'd love to visit Florence.

Yes, I'm thinking about Errol, too. Trying to get the next chapter written.

Peeking in here while at work. :o But I've got every surface in my office covered with papers that piled up over the past week and I'm slowly wading through them, trying to make order out of chaos.

Tried to post my pictures to the Worldsims Gallery but can't seem to get them uploaded. Strange, because I can do it through this kind of entry but then have to wait for them to be 'approved.' And they use up my limited allowance for story pictures here.

Anyway, back to work...:(

Lovely pics, Lyn :D I'm liking that loft-window in the pink-stucco building. I bet that apt costs an arm and a leg to live in ... maybe it's owned by the driver of that green van :p ... explains why he can't afford some new tyres

I've always wanted to live on a boat like the one in the last pic. There's a canal back of my house ... maybe I'll just build my own ... now where did I put that hammer .... ;)
