Pictures of a house that turned out pretty spiffy, just thought I'd share.

So now it's your turn. A thread just for showing off our best houses ...

OK. Updated. My camera's wonky today. No fine motor movement. :D

So they're a little slanted.

Anyway we can get some daytime shots? Even turning up my screen intensity doesn't let the details be seen very well.

As to houses, I'm pretty pleased with this one

Ooooo! Nice work, you guys! Love the pond, SBW, And the mansion looks elegant and homey...

And what a great setting, Kat! It looks like a home one would see overlooking the North Shore of Lake Superior - or perhaps on the coast of Maine!

Can't wait to get hone and pull out some of my creations. Great idea, SBW!!!

I'm always disappointed with all of my houses, so I just download ones from the Exchange. :o

Your house is very spacious, SBW. Mine are always jam-packed with furniture because I run out of space with new and better items once the family starts to make more money. I guess I'm too materialistic.

The lower part of the blue is water. This house sits on a high spot on a penninsula (the Kat City suburbs) surrounded by water. It's overlooking the "ocean" but it could be on Lake Superior or something like that.

I'm glad you liked it! (Unfortunately it's not one I can upload. The poor thing is on the largest lot available and won't upload to the exchange or even cooperate iin turning into a package. It's just too big!)

Thank you! Not all of my houses turn out so well. I built this one as you see it, unfurnished except for appliances and minus the outbuilding and swimming pool, and waited until I had sims who could afford it. I usually start from a small house and build outwards, which is fun too. I've made some cool houses that way, and some not-so-cool ones. The cottages you see across the street are meant to eventually have a second story, for example.

I've got seven people living in this house, so I needed to leave room for them to move. I don't mind a little clutter, but I hate it when my sims are always stamping their feet because they can't get around something.

So I give some thought to traffic flow, and leave space for them to walk. Also, I like lots of bathrooms. I hate bathroom traffic jams.

The building out front is their home business. (This is Alec, Jordan, Piper and Vyn's house, if anyone's interested.)

Amen to that. I'm converting a lot of my sim's homes to have his 'n her bathrooms.

I've totally given up with the conventional staircases though. Does that double staircase of yours work? With seven in the house!

In my experience if two sims set off to go downstairs at about the same time they'll both decide to use same stairway and the last to arrive will do the stampy feet thing and then forget why he was going down anyway.

I now only use the modular stairs as each 4 step module is independent. With the OFB stage I also like to wrap them around a corner and it also means that they then only need a 3 x 1 hole in the upper floor (same as the whole staircases)

surprised_by_witches
05-05-2006, 07:52 AM
So far, putting two staircases in seems to work, though of course you need a big house. I have another house with two completely separate sets of (single) stairs. Five people share that house and so far, no foot stamping has occurred.

Porter and Xena have a double staircase in their house, though, and even though it's just the two of them I sometimes get foot stamping, which puzzles me. I mean, they each have their own staircase!

Foot stamping usually happens when the maid is there, but even so ... (this was before they became vampires. Now, if they want to go downstairs they just fly.)

Not the one I uploaded but this is my own fave house. I built it more or less as it still is, but it has been lived in and loved and minor changes have been made from time to time. It's footprint hasn't changed since it was built (the plot has some wicked slopes!) so some creative thought has had to go into maximising the square footage available. I have 7 in the house at the moment and another is on the way.

Sadly those aren't his n' hers, one belongs to the pleasure son who needs his daily blast at the bubble blower before he can do anything  I am still mulling over how, exactly to redivide that floor without going wild. If the roofline needs changing things get complicated. I must admit that I really love tinkering with houses. I kind of just slap them down anyhoo and then juggle around later as the money rolls in. I also hate flat plots ...

this is the only house i have made and im very proud of it - inspired by a picture in an american victorian homes book. the interior isnt finished because the house cost 96,000 and my sims ran out of money, but right now im thinking a classic, subtle 60's/mod interior, because traditional victorian interiors arent really to my taste
here are my screenshots ;)

by the way i couldnt get the attachment button to do anything on thsi forum so i had to use an outside host - hope thats ok

I'm with you, Cheesey. Unless I have a specific reason for it, I never use motherlode. I occasionally use kaching if the game does something stupid that I don't agree with and my sims end up broke.

Like charging for flat roofs but not pointed ones. What's up with that?

I love your house! Very nice and so grand. Thanks for sharing!

LOL This has been so interesting. I also don't use the money cheats except the occasional kaching to replace broken/stuck items if there isn't enough money in the coffers.

I am actually losing interest in my current neighborhood because the fifth generation is starting to move out and the main hood is looking really neat, but I'm able to send those kids out with $150,000 start-up funds (I use Pescado's no automatic 20K hack and transfer money wth his money order hack ... and I still have too much money floating around )

I was looking at one of Ricky Andrews' (a former llama mascot) offspring, who was swanning around in a big 100K home I'd built a while back and there he was, a gas pump attendant (I also use Pescado's harder jobs hack), who goes to work in a Ferrari, and has a pool and spa.

After a good sleep, I'm thinking of starting over again and having one family called something like de Banque, or Guvamint so that I can use Pescado's money order to tax my families ... every Friday they have to pay their taxes ... could get kinda nerdy .... I think I'd better think it out again!

Do you have a problems with poor envirnment scores with those large rooms, SBW? Maybe I am just too picky, but I've tried open-plan before now and could never drag the environment score out of the yellow. Bad e-score affects things like headmasters' visits, party success, or just keeping a visitor happy to to stay long enough to become a friend.

I'll post some more of mine later. I carried out my tax threat. Pennfield now has a Mr. G Mint living in Kristalrose's Wilminton mansion. I used the debug cheat to make him know everyone and every Sunday night each family has to "do" their taxes. I am charging them 7% of the value of their property plus 25% income tax (actually I just make them give up 25% of whatever's in the bank on Sunday night) ... I have some complex rules I am still making up to cover situations where they can't afford to pay. Also Sims who live in trailer homes are exempt the property tax and only pay 10% income tax. I've yet to figure out what to do with the upwardly mobile sims in (I guess you'd call 'em 'tract house' ... I have a few different designs of 3/4 bed family homes in 25-35K bracket) ... maybe 3% property tax and 15% income tax  Either way it's made playing the fifth generation fun again ;)

Not generally, to answer your question. I am having a problem with Max & Avery's house. No matter what I clean the family's scores have been way in the yellow, even orange, environmentally speaking. Not sure why that is, since it's not even open plan. Maybe something to do with six people living in a small space?

When they get more money I'm expanding, or possibly moving them to a larger lot.

In the pictured household everyone's fairly happy most of the time, except when the robots run amuck.

Y'all have beautiful houses. Kat, I love your landscaping! SBW, I love your layout and the lake in the front. Cheesy, I love your gazebo! And Mirelly, I love the garage in the basement! :) Y'all need to make them available for upload here at World Sims.

Lynet

All these beautiful houses. I'm feeling inspired.

BTW, although it doesn't really matter for pictures of houses (in fact, the grid is a useful point of reference to judge size) I thought you may not have noticed that if you're in the build mode and click on 'ground cover' (which I believe is a selection under the picture of a shovel) the grid pattern disappears. You can take a picture while still in build mode but without the black squares on the lawn or the white squares sticking out of your building. (you need to keep an eye out for the white circle on the ground, though--move it off to one side, out of the picture)

The reason I find this useful is because while in build mode you can change day to night, or vice versa, for pictures. Of course, you can also use the setHour cheat but that messes up the sims' schedule.

Good tip, Lynet and nice house, Kristal.

I have polished up the Sim City terrain that I use for my main hoods -- I always use the one called CrystalSprings, although I barely recognise it these days. Since NL I have often wanted more plots with gentle slopes so I can bury garages in them (and vampire crypts ;) ). This weekend I plan on starting new 'hood on the recently modded terrain and just spending the weekend building houses sans custom content. I can then upload a few of the best along with suggestion as to where they fit best on my custom terrain. The big trouble with houses built for contoured plots is that they don't fit well into a landscape that isn't made for them. Indeed my present CrystalSprings hood (Pennfield) was so undulating that I had to plop down some blank 5x6 plots and then bulldoze them again just to flatten out an area to take a row of clapboard houses.

I must admit that I quite like house building. I rarely build while the sims wait on the front lawn thses days, I tend to prefer just building because mistakes don't cost money. I've seen advice that says build each room to suit the purpose, joining each room to the next paying attention to circulation ....

That's all very well for real life building design (where the occupants have slightly more sense than a drunken cockroach and where a host of other factors -- ranging from plumbing runs to energy conservation thru engineering issues relating to material properties) but in the Sim world designing like that tends to make everything look like a simple dolls house.

I start off by deciding what general shape of building I want and most often start off by thinking about the roof (seriously!) Once I know where the gable-ends are gonna be, whether there'll be any setbacks or steps in the roof, dormer windows etc. I can begin to sketch out the outline of the building; I nealy always have all the roof on before I begin subdiving into rooms. Once I start drawing in the walls to divide up the space it usualy becomes obvious that some part is too long or too short or whatever ... then begins the first of several long sessions with the undo button; it being generally easier and quicker to start over than to modify because sim roofs are ornery things and hate changes being made . To my mind the roof more than any other part is what makes a building look "right" or "wrong".

Argh! Lookit the time! I'm only out of the game now because Windows decided to reboot after installing some updates ... I really must turn off auto-update. Good job I noticed all the sudden disc activity and game hiccupping and did a save ... the whole lot crashed two minutes later just as Cadence was getting out her coffin to give birth

surprised_by_witches
05-10-2006, 08:54 PM
Hey, I had a sim named Cadence. She got blown up in the great motherboard earthquake, but I really liked her.

May have to resurrect that name. I forgot all about it!

I know what you mean about the roof, which is why I give my sims the flat roof for free (I reimburse them). I mean, they could have a different roof but it'd look pretty silly on say, a warehouse.

Mirelly
05-11-2006, 08:37 AM
OK this is the abode of another branch of the extended Simmonds family (the name is nothing to do with Sims BTW ... it's just a name I plucked from the air when building a big family in CAS (2 male adults, 2 female adults, 2 teens, and 2 kids ... various races and genotypes ... I played them all for a while as 2 families in a big old house then moved one family out. Of course they were all Simmonds's so I have two families by the name of Simmonds who are not related to each other ... except that they are ... confused? Not half as much as I am?

Anyway this house has a checkered history. The design first appeared in Willisborough but that 'hood became a BFBVFS when I did something irreversible to Windows ... man, still smarts. The design surfaced again, modified as it was built from memory, in High Oak, but both the house and the whole 'hood became very wobbly after installing NL. So Sketched out its measurements and built it for the movee-outy Simmonds's. Are ya keeping up?

Anyway OFB caused that lot to crash and crash and crash, so I moved the poor fambly out and nuked the house and then built it again. I like this house ... and yeah I am always tinkering around with it ... moving internal walls this way and that way ... but the general layout hasn't changed in a tomato's age (thanks for that Ruthie ... ;) )

Anyway ... I give you the property at 17 North Street. There's a joke in one of the pictures and there's a stonking great §1,000 prize to the first poster who identifies it.

(Of course it'll probably look better when some trees have grown ... but they ran out of cash and even having their house bulldozed by the Maxoids hasn't gotten them an exemption from my harsh new tax regime ... they had to sell one of the cars ... and most of the rooms are barely furnished ... I'm sure the crashing problem was their fault anyway ....

Lol the joke got lost in the World Sims database. The ground flor pic was called grnd.jpg ... cos I'm too lazy to type in the vowels when no one's gonna read 'em. The others were called roof, front and rear but the upstairs pic was called first_floor_cos_I_aint_a_bloody_yank_LMAO.jpg

I've been in one of those moods all day ... maybe it's because the roofing contractor finally showed up today and sealed up the hole in my outhouse roof. I was kinda hoping he'd need to go inside the wretched thing cos then I could've got him to escort Harry the spider from the premises. Sadly he was content to sit on the top with his gas burners and roofing felt and try to outloud my music with his own boombox. Looks like it'll be up me and the cat to face off Harry ... that as she's only 10 inches tall and I have another 5 feet on that and Harry is up in the (driest part natch) of the roof I guess it's all down to me. Maybe I'll try to tempt her down the wall with nice freshly defrosted chicken from the freezer ... with a bit of blue food dye and some old lace curtains for wings I could probably make it look like a nice appetising fly of bitesize proportions ... yeah I know you thought I was joking about it being a big spider. I ain't going in there with anything less than a rocket-propelled grenade launcher and a fully-packed silo of Patriot missiles

Ground floor, first floor, sheesh. I think the British system makes more sense, personally ... but it was awfully confusing for this yank when I lived there, nonetheless.

My favorite thing I saw was the punkers drinking tea with their pinkies crooked, like their grans had taught them to. Cuz you know they'd get wonked on the ... what's Emma's word? ... the fob, that's it, if they did it any other way.

Press C on the keyboard at any time to take a picture. The picture will be of the whole screen so use the pause key to freeze the action and then zoom/pan around to get an artistic shot. Remember that sims like having walls -- for privacy -- so don't just snap photo's with all the wall down

Remember, too that the photo's are much smaller than on your screen. If you're after a facial expression zoom in closer ... then get closer still. I get so cheesed off when someone insists on showing me the snapsots they took at their friend's wedding. I have to bite my lip sometimes to avoid asking why the people are only like one inch tall on the big 6x4 glossy prints ... and I swear the next person who gets out a cellphone to show me their dog/grandson/rose bush is gonna be a needing a longer cord for recharging the wretched thing :( Anyway ....

Finding your pics ... this can be complicated or easy depending on how you approach it. This is the easy way ...
Where are the pics?
Some pics are stored in the folder called Storytelling in
\My Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2\
The first two images you'll see there will be the last snapshot you took in the game. One is called "Snapshot: and the other is called "Screenshot". Both are bitmap images which means they are too large to use for posting on the internet.
All the other images in that folder are either Maxis ones placed there when the neighborhood was created (even if it's one you you made yourself) plus any phote's you've taken in the neighborhood screen or at community lots or else shots you might take while building when there is no family.
So is there anywhere else to find pics then?
Yes
The bulk of pictures are also stored in folders called Storytelling
There is a Storytelling folder in each and every Neighborhood folder. For example:
\My Documents\
EA Games\
The Sims 2\
Neighborhoods\
N001\Storytelling
N002\Storytelling
N003\Storytelling
N001 is Pleasantview, 2 Strangetown, 3 Veronaville (unless you have deleted any of those and then made custom hoods ...)
YIKES! HELP! There's zillions how do I find the one I want?
You need to use Windows sorting tools
Click View then Select Details
Look for the column headed "Date Modified"
Click the Date Modified header until the most recent date is shown at the top
You have now sorted all your pics into date order
Make sure the details tab in the left hand column is open and when you highlight a file you will see a preview
Keep the window sized so you can see a bit of your desktop and drag any that you want to upload to the desktop.
Don't use any file starting with 'thumbnail' they are tiny like the preview image. Use the ones starting with 'snapshot' This concludes this Finding Sims 2 Pics 101 ;)

wow, bulletpoints.. im impressed :)

i know where to find my pictures, i have no problem with that, my problem is, that when i am in game i take loads of pics (i took about 10 pics, 1 of each floor and some close ups of the best rooms) and when i go into the folder there is only one pic, always the last one i took. the only thing i can think of is that when i take a pic it overwrites the last pic i took each time, so i only end up with one picture.
if this is correct then there must be a way to stop that happening right?

if this is not correct, then please accept my humble appologies :)

thanks

Sigh ...

Para number 1 describes where you are looking. The last pic you take is always stored in that folder as a bitmap (which is much to large a file to upload anyway!) and as it has the same name everytime it is bound to be overwritten

Paragraph number 2 describes where you should be looking. Those pics are jpg's with unique names and are never overwritten.

Please stop being impressed with the bullet points and start reading the words they accompany :p

the problem i had was after reading your bullet points was i went into the folder and saw N001/N002/N003 and you said they are the maxis made neighbourhoods, i was expecting it to create a folder for my own neighbourhood but it hadnt.
having now looked again i have found all the pictures in N002, probably because i deleted that neighbourhood so it just used that folder.. right?

anyway, i found the pics, so here ya go.. my most recent house..

LOL ... it does help to look first then ask questions

Nice house ... do you find that garage gives you problems seeing all the action on the ground floor of the main house?

And I bet that bath and shower in http://www.geocities.com/caduto11/snapshot_f16fe9e4_91713fef.jpg can't be used at the same time cos a bathing sims would wanna use the righthand side to get in and out ... hmm must try that myself and see what happens ;)

By the way you can upload pics to World Sims. There's a limit of 5 pics per post but you can always make another post. Just use the Go Advanced or Post Reply buttons and scroll down to the manage attachments section.

PS I hated Strangetown too ;)

ive never tried to use them at the same time, only 2 people living in the house at the moment so havnt had the problem yet, and there are 3 other bathrooms in the house...

also, the garage never gets in the way, of course, while on the 1st floor of the main house you are actually on the 2nd floor of the garage, but thankfully the game is 3d so you can just rotate the view and see it from the other angle :P

i have tried the 'insert picture' icon but it just does exactly that, and you end up with a massive pic in the middle of the post, was wondering how you all had tiny thumbnails going to a nice big picture, i will have to try that for my next house :)

thanks

Very nice house. I can see you're into symmetry! Love the swimming pool. Very attractive.

You've given me some ideas for my own houses. I like the piano next to the dining area. I'll have to try to find a grand piano. They just look nicer, don't they.

If you have the room, that is.

Oops. Looked at it again and it's a deck, and that's the bedroom!

Still looks nice, though.

Finally created a house tonight I'm very proud of. It's quite large, which it wasn't meant to start out that way, I got away from myself. I'm disapointed in myself that I didn't put it on a larger lot though now...any way to change the lot size a house is on? Anyone? I'm guessing not, but that would be nice.

Anyway, Frontview, only room for one car since I choose too small a lot, telescope in backyard on side.

back/side view, notice the nice decks.

Basement with a walkout; pool table, poker table, bowling lane, musical equipment, treadmills, indoor pool, darts and a bathroom.

Middle floor, huge kitchen and dining room, two half baths, two fireplaces on middle floor, hot tub off the dining room on the balcony..

Upper floor, 4 bedrooms, each with their own bath, an office, sitting room off the master suite, fireplace in the master suite, and room to read in the hallway, which is really just another big room.

I like that, a lot. It can be very difficult to make an interesting looking house out of basically square foundation but you have succeeded in spades! The basement fun zone is a great idea! The two main floors are well laid out ... though I am not too sure about that 12 place dining table plus 3 counter stools. Mostly I love the wrap around porches, balconies, the roof and the chimneys ... :D Heck I'm gonna hafta make my own, now

Plus 3 stools...look again, plus 4! LOL, I'm planning on turning this into one of those home businesses where people come and play in the basement, the rather large table will be nice to have, and for parties of course as well.

I moved a family in last night and it plays rather well, no bumping into each other in the hallways. I'm proud to say this is the first house I've ever built that has a basement! I couldn't figure it out before, but now I've got it down.

Thanks for the compliment Mirelly from the woman who amazes me with her houses! I have a few of yours downloaded into my game.

Ooooh, pretty! I love the second floor, with the nice big rooms for the kitchen, LR and dining. My daughter loves those patterned floors but she tends to put them all in the same house, which hurts my head. You've managed to make them look classy.

Love the landscape. I don't think the lot needs to be bigger. Reminds me of those gorgeous houses in Kenwood that are all right next door to each other. Sometimes that's what happens in RL, too ...

Very nice, Shana! Love it.

I played around and made another, smaller house last night.

I think I might change the roof on this one, haven't decided if I like it or not yet.

I didn't furnish this one completely yet, and I still have a few changes I might do to it, such as add another room in the basement...or rather partition it off.

Front View - overlooking the ocean!

Back View - I'm planning on putting a swimming pool down at the end of the steps once someone moves in and can afford it. And looking at this I noticed that I need to put more windows on the back on the top level.

Basement - empty room and bathroom

Middle level - kitchen and bathroom (I just noticed I never put the door into the bathroom, this needs to be fixed!

Upper level - bedroom

Here's Morgan, Mallory, Selena and Random's house. It's not much to look at on the outside, kind of large and sprawling, but the interior turned out quite nice, as you can see.

There's a separate music room, library and family room, as well as a foyer. I wanted to have a separate dining room, maybe someday when there's an upstairs there'll be room. Right now the four bedrooms take up a lot of space on the first floor. The two little boys share, and Hunter, as the only girl, gets her own little room.

Once I put in an upstairs the exterior should look nice too. Right now, not really worth posting. Just a loooonnnng white house with a red roof.

Been meaning to add my two cents to this thread for a while...Finally got the chance.

Here is a cozy seaside cottage. It includes an old root cellar - perfect for those unsightly Aspiration and Career Rewards; a front porch for those warm summer evenings, as well as a double-decker back porch with ocean views; A cozy livingroom and lovely diningroom with spectacular coastal views; and finally, two well appointed bedrooms upstairs.

What more could a Sim Family want?

So this one isn't clever or carefullly planned. BUt I think it's pretty, so I thought I'd put pictures here. I decided to build a large chapel for a big wedding which will eventually happen for Joe and Ania in my story. Not soon, but I felt like building. It may change as I think about it later (not too happy with the wallpaper right now).

I found some interesting windows over at MTS2 under the 'Midsummer Night's Dream' thread and decided to experiment with them. I put lots and lots of windows in this fairy tale chapel.

wow, that chapel is amazing!!
really good work lynet, the windows look beautiful, but shouldnt the big round stained glass window be behind the 'alter'? really like the wallpaper too, i can never find stuff like that when i need it, lol :)That was my original plan, to put the round window behind the alter area. However, I didn't look first to see how many spaces the rose window required. So it would have been off center. I considered tearing down walls and adding or subtracting space...hmmm...to heck with that. It's a fairy tale chapel, not a real cathedral. ;)

As always, I'm in awe of your architectural skills:D Thanks, SBW.

Maybe there's a big cross-like structure on MTS2Check out that thread I mentioned at MTS2, 123. The stained glass windows are beautiful and include the scenes you'd find in a real cathedral. I know there are crosses available at MTS2. I decided not to use them in my fairy tale chapel. Just trying to be respectful of important symbols.

Just wanna show off a bit cos I'm proud of meself. I just designed this for Pescado's Building Contest Of Awesomeness contest ... :o It's probably utterly unawesome but I like it anyway. Y'all can download it if you want ... no custom content except for Pescado's phone and security hacks plus the other useful debug and macrotastic tools

On the market for a reasonable 120,000 simoleons is this fine, not to say modestly awesome property comprising some fine accomodations for sims combined with economy of system resources. The house stand on a small plot and the main rooms are all easily accessible on two main floors. There is additional accomodation in the attic suitable for guests or any other purpose.

The house comes with a nice sized pool and there is plenty of extra space in the rear garden for the addition of a crypt with or without a cellar should such a feature be needed (or thought desirable).

All the family bedrooms have en-suite bathroom/shower-room facilities. The master suite has his and her bathrooms plus a useful dressing area and is immediate adjacent to a good-sized nursery.

Pictures tell the story far better. All labels are above the pictures they relate to.

Camera Presets
For maximum playability, the house is designed to played with preset camera positions. I chose these:

4 = The master bedroom with visual access to all the essential features as well as access to the nursery
http://www.mirelly.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/maty_comp/008_cam_4.jpg
5 = The 3 first floor family bedrooms with visual access to all bathroom elements
http://www.mirelly.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/maty_comp/009_cam_5.jpg

5 then Page Up = View of the attic rooms (note that this view shows an alternative floor plan - the spacious landing area could be used for one or more career rewards.
http://www.mirelly.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/maty_comp/011_cam_5u.jpg
6 = Close up view of the dining area
http://www.mirelly.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/maty_comp/012_cam_6.jpg
8 = View of the family room where studying and games may be played. This room could easily be converted into a business if desired
http://www.mirelly.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/maty_comp/014_cam_8.jpg
9 = A view of the mailbox also giving sight of the lounge and the ideally located homework area near the front door
http://www.mirelly.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/maty_comp/013_cam_9.jpg

NB The numbers follow my own system and have no other significance. I leave 7 unallocated for miscellaneous ad hoc usages as and when needed.

That completes my description. The house has not been overfilled with useless clutter. It is playable and economical and should cope admirably with 8 sims.

Oh, it's awesome alright. Wow. All that for 120,000 simoleons? Amazing. If it doesn't win the contest then I'm going to have to go see what did win.

You know, it never occurred to me to program preset camera positions simply for playing a house. I only ever did that for setting up to take pictures. :o I think my brain is frozen in time somewhere.

BTW, totally unrelated to your house or any of your houses, I downloaded a house that, of all things, flooded the neighborhood whenever I tried to place it. I was not amused by the damage being done so I deleted the house after the third attempt. It looked fine in the bin but the thing would spring a leak once placed in the neighborhood. Even the road was under water. I'm really sorry I didn't take a picture of it. (You heard right. The camera freak took no pictures. :( ) The lucky thing about this is that I had decided to put the house in a completely new neighborhood because it really did make a mess of the surrounding area; for example, turning grass to sand. Oh, and I think (not sure) there was a stream or water along the rear of the yard. But that could just have been part of the general flooding.

Does anyone know what the creator did, or maybe what I did, to cause this?

Lesson learned: have a neighborhood set aside to use just for testing things.

Lynet, I have never heard of anything like that. Do you still have the .zip file? Or maybe the name of the site and the house? You could PM me with those, and I can see if it does the same thing in my game.

BTW--thanks for all the praise of my house. I actually didn't think anyone would like it since it's a "personal" house. I have a few others I've made in my game but haven't made available on my site yet. (Mine always seem to be....I don't know...lackluster...)

Sylla inspired me ... ;)

I have a family that badly needs a new home. They lost their original home in the OFB Re-Nu-U orb debacle and they've been pretty much gypsies ever since camping out in ridiculous buildings that were thrown together with scant regard for function. Anyway due to a mishap with the coin tossing Momma French is anticipating the arrival of child number 4  and their house is so awful ... a great sprawling post-modern nightmare where every room seems to be located with maximum inconvenience in mind.

Anyway I built them a purple palace to raise the new junior member in. A five bedroom marvel of spacial economy, on two floors plus a huge cellar under the entire ground floor suitable for all those cellary needs. The upper floor contains four family bedrooms (all with ensuite shower rooms) plus a massive open area easily large enough for a pool table plus a lot more.

Downstairs is a master bedroom with his and hers bathrooms and private access to a large separate nursery. The front door, handily located with feet of the mailbox, is close, but not too close, to the twin-footed stairs as well being close to a homeworking area and the large double width archway that access the kitchen dining area. To the left of the front door is a cosy open-plan lounge where the residents may watch TV, dance or read. At the back of the entrance hall is a door giving access to the rear garden and a cloakroom.

Access to the cellar is lockable to keep visitors out.

Usually I take the default houses in the house bin and place them in my blank neighborhoods. I'm not much of an architect, just a genetics obsessed writer. :o

On my laptop, though, I started a Legacy-type family and attempted to build a house for the founder (as I refer to her as "Good Kiara," I didn't want to lose a pretty face to the forces of evil again  ) and her family. I took pictures of them and the house complete with floorplan overhead shots, but my brother is playing Sims at the moment. After seeing what I had done with Kiara, he wanted to start a Legacy challenge as well. Unfortunately, whereas Kiara Gonzales Cormier has been blessed with baby boys three in a row, Garko Salvadori has been blessed with baby girls three in a row, the second birth giving him twin girls! :D See Al? That's what happens when you marry your guy to Jan Tellerman. ;)

Thanks for the lovely compliments guys!! And I'm glad to be your inspiration Mirelly!!
Here's the floor plans to those houses, they are both easily playable, haven't had any problems so far...

This is the blue house...

And you are more than welcome to upload it form http://www.savefile.com/files.php?fid=2010181

OFB is needed for the cone roof, other than that, it's all maxis content (I think).

And the red house I had to remove all the content that wasn't maxis so it looks a bit different now, and I belatedly realised you couldn't get to the second floor so had to add some steps lol.

Two houses downloaded! Thank you! I feel such a heel that I am not uploading any houses at the moment. I use Pescado's mod to synchronise my families and removing it from the downloads folders causes me to have to reinstall it individually in each playable house. BTW although I donwloaded your two houses for eye-candy for the neighborhood screen the blue house looks perfectly playable from the outset and it has scope for tweaks to fine-tune ... something that I try to go to a lot of trouble to design out of mine cos I'm a born tinkerer so by deeply complicating my floor plans I sap the will of my player-self to contemplate wall moving ... move one wall in one of my properties and you pretty much end up having to move them all

I'm very impressed with all the great work I see here. There's so much talent, it's amazing!

By comparison, most of my houses turn out kinda crappy. :o The pictures below are probably of my best house. It's a 5BR, 3BA Victorian.... and unfortunately, I can't seem to make a cheap house! This one is around $218,000. :p If any of you have any tips to make it more attractive, please, let me know! :D

Now for what you're actually seeing... the first view is kind of obvious. The second picture is a view of the second floor, and the gthird picture is a picture of the first floor. The fourth picture is a sample of the interior (in this case, the front parlor/living room/whatever you want to call it), and the final picture is of the kitchen.

-John

PS. If any of you would like the house, let me know and I'll upload it to one of those sites that host files only--somehow, I just don't feel right linking to a download on another sims site.

I never even thought of making porches that wrap around the corner of a house...:o Mine are all just big squares in the beginning. After a while they get interesting shapes with all the rooms I add on, but they're still not designed nicely...no cool stairs or anything like that. I once used the in-house foundation to make stairs with a landing, but that's not all that cool either.

JohnEZ
07-09-2006, 08:10 AM
Thank you Michelle. :) Funny thing is, I had to rebuild the thing at least three times. The first time I completed it and the lot was too big. Second time, completed it, decided the lot was too small. This time it's just right :p (It's almost a Goldilocks story!)

Person123: If I was designing my own houses, I'd admit to that. My houses used to be big squares unfortunately. But I've found sites like www.coolhouseplans.com and www.globalhouseplans.com, which really help me out as far as design is concerned. More or less, I go on and look for a house that is visually interesting (and Sims friendly, lol) from the outside. If the layout works, that's all well and good, but most of the time I'll adapt it so the interior is more... custom.

I've yet to make a house with the L-shaped stairs or anything interesting like that. But now that I have OFB with that split level foundation-y thing, it should be more readily possible. I'll have to experiment some :p

Thanks again,
John

I echo everyone else, John. A very pretty house both from the outside as well as nicely decorated and furnished inside. I would want to rearrange the inside room layout a little ... mainly to create small private bathrooms for the upstairs bedrooms but that's just a little quirk of mine  Mostly I design by starting at the front door and sketching out where the traffic is going to pass between there and such important places as the homework dumping spot (kids and teens can waste so much of a day trekking just to put down their homework). I try to make every one different because after that it's a case of seeing what rooms can be fitted around that area (I count the stairs, if any, as a "room". I try to keep each room as small as possible without making it cramped, so kitchen areas are generally 4 or 5 by 3 or 4 with dining areas in the same general size area. Living rooms can be any sort of size really because sims don't really need them except as a place to watch TV ... Sometimes I like to make the lving room and integral part of the reception hall as in my recent brag. Once I have a ground floor mapped out that I like I try to avoid messing with again and sweat blood trying to shoehorn everything else the house needs within the same profile of the upper storeys. It doesn't always work

JohnEZ
07-09-2006, 10:20 AM
First, let me say thanks for the compliments! :)

Mirelly: LOL... if nothing else, TS2 will teach one how to use "trial and error"--but, one could say, "It's more fun that way." For me, the size of the room all depends on what the room's going to be (although, planning out the areas for the kids homework and whatnot is a pretty good idea.) Personally, I always put two "living" areas in the house--a formal parlor, and a TV room (one of my quirks). You are right in that each of the rooms on the top floor should've had their own baths--it'd have been a good idea.

But I digress. Back on track, I build houses the same way--from the foyer through where I think the flow of traffic will most likely go. But it has been known to result in a funky looking house :p

I always tend to overbuild my houses. Sorta makes me angry, but I'm a fan of big houses, no matter how many sims are living in them. You know the Victorian house I posted earlier? It has only 3 occupants--so I have 3 empty bedrooms, too. Haha :p

Thanks, everyone. I'm really proud of that house, too. The decor is cool, hard to see from above, I know. I'm going to start a new thread that talks about my crashy problem. I think I'll recreate it if my sims have to move. It's way too cool of a house not to use.

No third floor next time, though.

I haven't downloaded anything new in almost two weeks. This lot has had other bugs, fixed with the lot debugger. I'm hoping it's just the lot.

I played another lot just before it and it was fine. Crossed fingers.

Youall should be very proud of me. I uploaded my first house!

I got the idea for this house when I was browsing some European architecture and home decorating magazines. They reminded me of the row houses I saw when I was in London a few years ago. However, Simhouses won’t go that close together because the wall closest to the edge has to be at least 2 squares from the edge, as opposed to right on the edge.

I also have a fondness for the Maxis-made Townhouse, although I always wish it had a bigger backyard, similar to those row houses. They always seemed to have a cozy private area with trees and even fountains and ponds.

So, I built this house.

You can find it here:

Thanks. It's on the list of "small lots". I wanted to do a small one similar to the Maxis townhouse that I like so well, but with a bigger backyard (and a big longer house.) Most townhouses seem to be very long and narrow, hence the lot shape.

I had a lot of fun doing it too. The Degas Ballerina (pink) bedroom is one of my favorites too. However, the one that took the most work was the Master bedroom. I didn't want to just have the wood to be "ivory". I wanted it to be ivory colored with some of the green done in a way that would be like the "antique" staining methods I've seen in some of the home decorating books. So, I had to hand paint in each and every dot of green on the ones that I did the "stain" effect on. (Well, it was actually a combination of airbrush, "smear" blender, single pixel pen and "eraser" although I ended up using the pixel pen a lot.)

The solarium was loads of fun to make. I had to use the "constrainfloorelevation" cheat to do it without having to use someone's new meshed object. But there are several tutorials that explain how to do it. I used one of the TSR tutorials: "Creating Roof Skylight Windows" to learn how to do it (on a house for one of my regular families) and had so much fun with it, that I wanted to use it in this house.

I had a lot of fun making the recolors and I'm sooo bummed out that they didn't upload so people can have them. (Grumble, grumble, grumble.) But now I feel comfortable enough with the process that I'll do it when I'm missing something, same as I make clothes recolors when I have a Sim who just can't find the right outfit.

It's a "big house" on a small (4x2 is what I clicked, the Exchange says 5x1) lot. I really had fun making it (and now I'm jazzed about my next one!)

I just wish that the curtains and bedding had packaged. I deliberately used my husband's computer (without Pets) so that it would package the recolors, but the curtains and bedding *still* wouldn't package. That just bummed me out. Have you looked at regular house plans? They can be very inspiring.

Roofs can be tricky. They've gotten easier to get just what you'd like with each EP, but there's still some things that just don't work like I'd like to see. (I don't like that I'll have a shed roof doing just what I want, but I go one space further and the durn thing decides it wants to be a different direction! That irks me!)

There are also some great tutorials on how to make interesting houses. TSR and MTS2 have the best ones I've found (although anyone with others they've found, let me know. I have a notebook where I keep copies to refer to while I'm building.)

There are also stories on the Exchange that are meant as tutorials. SimMasterRalph is a housebuilder who has done some great ones that I've found useful. And you can do a search for "tutorials" on the Exchange and find more that way.

I have two new houses on the Exchange. They are both meant for Seasons.
The larger one is "Tidewater Plantation" which has covered garden plots, a fishing pond, a pool and an orchard.

You can find it here:

The other one is a variation on the "Plantation" but is meant for people who like smaller houses and lots (for personal or computer reasons.) It's called Tidewater Cottage. It has garden plots, a fishing pond and some fruit trees.

I had a lot of fun making these! Unfortunately, I neither Seasons nor Pets includes recolors of Maxis items when it packages a house (either for a file or up to the Exchange) so I'm having to have the furniture uploaded separately to a friend's website. I don't have all the pieces uploaded yet, but they'll be under "objects" on Sterling Skye's Creators Forum: http://www.sterlingsims2.com/phpBB2/index.php

I hope you enjoy them!

That's nice, Kat. I was planning to build a new house today for my new hood. I've got a nice stock of standard homes that I use as common stock, but when I want to bridge a gap I need to build from scratch. I had an unever plot so was able to exploit that and I kept muttering to myself that this house was starting to look more like Kat's than any other. (It certainly didn't help that I <ahem> "borrowed" some ideas from you for the garden.)

Anyway. Under 71,000,

Lots of excellent build mode CC (plus one hack --Pescado's phone hack -- if you don't want it, just pull it out after installing.)

Coral. Your house looks good. What's the environment score like in that huge open-plan kitchen/diner/lounge? And is that a laundry room, I see to the right of the kitchen. What do your sims do in there :p ?

Love your modern home, Vega! Really nice floorplan and great use of windows! Imagine the views one could get!

And Kat...WOW...Just WOW!

Here are some interior shots of a house I made last night. Not much to look at on the outside, but the inside is freaking beautiful. And is my sim grateful? No, of course not. The stupid little cow stomps her foot about her environment score being in the red whenever she's upstairs, just because there's a big hole in the floor.

I've had holes in the floor before, but apparently she thinks she's special.

I had to add walls to the kitchen, ruining my artistic vision.

Sims. Sheesh.

Lovely interiors SBW! Love the pool room with the bar in the corner. Can your say "Pool PAR-TAY!" (I knew you could!)

By the way, how is it that when you look over the balcony railing, you can see the furniture on the ground floor? Is this a game setting I don't know about? Or is it something new with Seasons (which I don't have yet)?

surprised_by_witches
03-26-2007, 04:57 PM
It's a graphics setting called Hide Objects. Just click it to off and voila, furniture on more than one level. I think it's available with all permutations.

Glad you like it, and it isn't the pool she objects to, because she loves the first floor. It's the upstairs she hates. Stupid sim.

She's stupid, I agree, 'cause I'd like to live in that house. Wow

Here's my big old Victorian pile...Once it was the elegant summer home of one of Sim City's captains of industry...Now it has been turned into an orphanage. With room for five children in the attic dormitory and a rather more comfortable suite for the caretakers, this fully furnished home could be yours, off of the Sims 2 Exchange, for a mere $222,000.

Will you use it for your own Orphanage? Or will you restore it to it's former grandeur, and
move in one of your own wealthy simtizens?

Thanks for the kind words. It was one of the lots I lost during the GBFBVFS incedent last month. It was one of the few lots that I had failed to package and back-up, so I had to recreate it from scratch. Luckily, I had many pictures of the original, including the floorplan. I took the opportunity to make a few tweaks for the better, and I think it turned out rather well. Oh, and NO CUSTOM CONTENT! (I've learned my lesson!!)

I am now in the process of repopulating the orphanage with orphans - which is a long, tedious, and often heartless process! (Who knew "Death by Flies" would take so long!)

All of your houses make me jealous, I am such a bad house-maker.
Hey, if I want to move a newly created family into an expensive house,
is there a way to get enough money without moving to a separate lot
& then cheating? :)

Lynet
05-26-2007, 08:15 PM
If you have Nightlife, you can type the cheat: familyFunds Smith +100000

Use this cheat while in neighborhood view for a family that's still in the bin. It doesn't have to be 100000. I can be any amount. If there is no + sign then the the amount replaces the 20000 they already have. Otherwise it adds to it.

Here's a starter house I made. It's around 17,000-18,000 which leaves about 2,000-3,000 for food. It's fully furnished. Hope you like it as it's my first house. Just wish I was better LOL.

For some reason I'm getting unable to move/copy errors when attaching my images so here they are from photobucket.
