red circle with x?

i just installed sims 2 yesterday morning. it installed perfectly. and i have all the requirements. when i clicked the icon to play the game. it took 2-3 minutes and then it didnt load. it just had a dialogue box.. and it had a red circle with an x in it and that was it. and a button to press okay... but no dialogue. and it wont let me play the game. i downloaded and installed the patch but it didnt help. i also tried uninstalling and the reinstalling the game. but that didnt work either. i am still unable to play. can anyone help me?

I did a search and one of the solutions was removing an old sims folder that appeared.
