SecuROM Causes These Problems I'd like to compile a list of known problems SecuROM causes. Please keep a list of known problems caused by SecuROM here. Please do not go offtopic. Thanks.
SecuROM can cause some CD burners to fail to work. (These are mostly older software versions as the newer ones will still work with SecuROM in place as long as you're not trying to copy a game disc or copy a music disc more than a set number of times.)
It shuts off firewall without notification. My son is a singer, songwriter & composer and it wouldn't let him burn his own songs - in other words - even tho it left the reader part on mine alone, it wouldn't let us use the burner. It totally mucks up the comp to where you have to constantly reboot the comp. My comp tended to forget that it was supposed to be loading the game which is something I never have a problem with now that I no longer have SecuROM on it. The only way I've been successful at getting rid of SecuROM and the problems it causes is to reformat my comp.
To be fair, this computer I'm using right now has SecuROM. I don't have the problem burning anything to disc at the moment.
It doesn't seem to affect everyones comp...just some, and in different ways. My one son (not the one I'm living with) had SecuROM on his comp and he had no problem with his, but I, on the other hand, had problems from the get go. I'm using a different comp, right now, but I refuse to see if it'll work on this one.
Understandable, that when you don't have the problem, it's hard to understand when someone else is. Apparantly, the problem depends on the PC and how it works with SecuROM.. I bought a brand new computer for Pets.. My NVIDEA card was one of the ones that didn't work with my game.. I spent $500 to upgrade the video card and RAM. This took till January 2007 to resolve. so my game played well with the new stuff packs and Seasons.. When I installed H&M and Pet Lifestories, suddenly my PC was no longer working properly.. It disabled the abililty to reformat my PC. HP sent me 6 attempts to give me new reformatting disks.. It somehow wipes the previous saved system restores.. Which then causes the computer to also sometimes alter the thumbprint of your PC.. ( which I guess is the technical word not sure.. ) This causes the format disks to no longer be valid for your own personal PC.. Then the your PC company has to reload the windows themselves.. IF they can do this.. SecuROM seems to cause my PC to run harder.. It caused it to run and sound like a jet airplane warming up.. When I had my PC problems I ended up getting a brand new motherboard put on a 8 month old PC, New RAM, New Fan... a ton of things.. on a brand new computer. It still didn't solve the problem.. It took them finally sending me a new Hard-drive ( free of SecuROM ) before I could reformat my computer and it would run quietly. The CD/DVD drives of most and all new computers are now writable.. It seems to cause this drive to either corrupt or malfunction, my PC CD/DVD will open and close 50-70 times when I attempt to try to run the game. my barely a year old PC now has a drawer that is wearing down.. Updating Video cards, etc can sometimes become a problem.. If I update my video card, sometimes it takes uninstalling back to Seasons or Bon Voyage ( using the SecuROM removal tool) to get it to finally accept and run properly.. I still haven't gotten my game to work this time after a new driver update. When I say work right, it seems to choke and dumps to desk top or has flickers of blue screens.. then an hour glass.. I do have alot of custom content but I have upgraded my PC to handle this.. Something with SecuROM seems to irritate the PC to cause this.. I have to literally keep working till I make it work. I think the biggest problems are anything to do with copying, creating, or reproducing documents, CD's etc. It interferres with updating drivers, alters your thumbprint of your PC, somehow changes your registery to make things go wacky.. There is more, but it's all I can currently think of.. I have tried my best to do the right thing this whole past year, but I can no longer play my game trying to use my CD and this is with my brand new Freetime.. trying to keep the drawer closed and getting the PC to recognize that a CD is in there so it can start to run is getting wearisome.. then if the game crashed or I had to uninstall it meant doing the process all over again.. My computer is not that old, it shouldn't have this problem at all.. Especially getting all new things not 6 or so months ago.. it literally spent 3 months with HP instead of with me. I fear it going downhill the same way as last summer and I know it was when I had the H&M and Pet Lifestories SecuROM on it and then the Bon Voyage SecuROM.. So in essence with all that HP did on my computer, it isn't a year and something old, it's "technically" only 6 months old with all the hardware exchanges trying to resolve the issue. When I used the SecuROM removal tools my PC calmed down and began to function properly again.. So I was able to play Bon Voyage again using the SecuROM removal tool after each game play.. Now with Freetime and Kitchen & Bath, my PC is acting up again and I am once again trying to calm it down.. and yet in 3 months I have to go through the whole cycle again if I want the next expansion and they choose to use another aggressive version of copyright protection software.. I used to play 10-12 hours a day or more when I had lots of time, I loved playing my game!.. Now.. I barely play every two weeks per resolving issues or barely play a couple Sim days cause the PC acts up. My PC is not old, it shouldn't have this much problem with the Sims 2 game, it is the only thing it does have an issue with until the drives get wacky or the drawer does. This kills a Simmers enthusiasm to have to troubleshoot any more than they have to, to have to validate for the new SecuROM etc.. would only add to this burden all the more.. I hope this post helps you have some insight to what some are having problems with and I know I haven't touched on all the issues it causes.. Even though your not experiencing this right now, some have been hit really hard, and some have had their PC's degrade slowly due to it then have it go really bad all at once.. I really hope someone listens and does something to improve this situation.. Getting a new expansion pack or stuff pack shouldn't cause this much trouble and issues as what we have been experiencing with the Sims 2 product especially since Pets NVIDEA issues.
That's horrible azsimmer! It sounds like SecuROM doesn't behave well when there are hidden partitions that has backup information on there.
That's what I am wondering because it still is running hard and I attempted to remove it all.. I really miss being enthusiastic about the game. I was the most diehard simmer of all that I personally knew.. I used my game to escape problems or think and mull over problems.. Or simply to relax when I had rough weeks.. But to have to stress over playing the game, it totally puts it in a new perspective and a burden.. I really wished they would understand how this is affecting their most faithful customers, it isn't just what it does to the PC Josh, it is what is happening to their customer base, when other simmers see someone having problems with their PC due to SecuROM then it makes them mistrust it too, some aren't willing to take the risk.. It's not just the PC's: it's the loyalty, the trust, and the enthusiasm of the Sims game that is being destroyed by what has happened with the SecuROM.. I hope that helps with the understanding too. ETA: I have since Pets keep hoping that the next expansion will improve.. so to go from the Pets NVIDEA issue to my current one, I am burnt out trying to resolve the issues just so I can play my game.. :cross-eyed:
I just haven't bothered to buy any EP or SP since BV after all the problems SecuROM caused me....I'd rather lose out on playing them rather than possibly losing my whole comp. At least this way I can still play with the ones that don't have SecuROM.
My PC came with a DVD/RW drive as the default. It is a LightScribe one, the odd thing is, I have never used the burning part of the application, so not sure why it causes it such an issue.. I have a HP Pavillion a1520n if you want to find the specs on it.. I upgraded to a ATI X1600 PCI express video card with the 512MB and then added another 2GB of RAM.. I have all the latest updated drives. Oh and one other thing it did was actually disabled my USB ports last summer too.. So far those are still working this round of problems.
I have a HP Pavillion DVD/CD RW. It is a LightScribe a1253w. I can't tell you anymore than that, for now, as I can't remember the specs. I bought it off the Walmart shelf with the LightScribe and didn't add anything to that so I don't know why it doesnt like my comp. It does have an extra expansion bay but I've never upgraded that part either. Oh and it does have partitioned drives in it...if that helps.
If that was to me...I've only used a comp to be able to play the sims... (Yeah, I'm pretty lame when you start talking compineseo.
Funny I can't burn any dvd-r's or rw's at all on my computer. I have a Sony dvd burner AW-Q170A and if I have the My computer window open and I stick in a dvd recordable disk it will change the name of the drive from dvd-rw drive to cd drive and tell me to insert a disk into the drive. I'm not using any kind of burning software ( that I know of ) other than the built-in Microsoft software that came with Windows xp. I still think this is a Securom screw up. Just out of curiousity would this also prevent me from manually making a restore point on my computer?
It wouldn't prevent you making a manual restore point at all.. but there is no guarantee that same restore point will be there in a month from now.. Mine seem to disappear and I don't have a time limit on them.
I'm wondering if you used a burning software like Nero that it would correct much of the problems with burning.
Actually I tried a version of Nero I had gotten as part of a software pack from some motherboard I'd bought and it still wouldn't work. What hint was that Granny? Glad I could help !
