    Auto shutdown of screen?

Not sure if this question belongs in this section, but here's my problem.

I was playing sims2 on my PC.. and all of a sudden my monitor would go to powersaving mode. I've had this same problem happen to me with another game too but never found out what causes this. I could still hear the game running. As with the other game I could get alt+tab to work and get it back to the desktop, but it doesn't seem to work for Sims 2. Nothing seem to be able to get the screen turn back on (even with ctrl+alt+del) and which the only thing i could do is reset/restart my computer. It really sucks cos I just finished decorating my house and haven't saved it before this happen again! Anyone know what causes this to happen? and any solution? Thanks a million!!!

I moved this here, Julia, because you mentioned that the problem wasn't limited to The Sims 2 Not that I'm sure it even belongs here  I sometimes feel as confused as I guess most everyone is when they look at all the choices

Now then ... You might start by changing your desktop power management settings and see what effect that has. To do that:
    1. Right click a blank area of the desktop and choose Properties
    2. Click the screensaver tab
    3. Click the Power button in the Monitor power section
    4. In the Power Schemes section (at the top) select the option "Always On" from the drop down menu
    5. Click all the OK's to exit out
You then have to just keep playing to see if it's fixed the problem ... meanwhile make sure to save often.

Sorry I can't be more help ... maybe someone else will have better suggestions.

Thanks Mirelly for the tips. But I'm pretty sure I already have that on always on. which is why it made my head spin when it happened again. :(

LOL I was only recently out of bed. I missed a crucial point. You said that with other game you were able to alt-tab to the desktop ... because did that action cause the monitor to re-awaken or what ... exactly please. The Sims 2 is a very heavy user of system resources and if a problem occurs then a <ahem> 'strained" system might be hard-pressed to respond to keyboard entries. eg. For some reason, for me, Sim City 4 sometimes remains running, as a "process" after the application has visibly terminated and I often don't notice until I realise that the puter is on a go slow ... ... by which time Ctrl/Alt/Del can take take upwards of 10 minutes to respond ... depending upon how many mouse click initiated orders are still in the queue ... :mads:

You got my curiosity aroused now and I'd love to see this fixed ... even it means you have to get a new monitor ... some initial searches point to blaming the hardware ...

Meanwhile ... to speed things up do this http://forums.worldsims.org/showpost.php?p=94501&postcount=4 (update your graphic drivers) then come back and post your dxdiag report (instructions in the link above)

that make alot more sense with why it (alt+tab) didn't work for Sims 2. I'm guessing it's not the monitor's problem cos I've recently bought a new monitor. And it happened on both monitors but differen't games.
Oh and as to the alt+tab question, it did reawake the monitor and of course, it brought me back to the desktop. And the game would still be running when I click back in from the taskbar. There wasn't any errors or anything showing at all.
I'm sorta guessing it's my video card that might be causing this? I got a new computer last Sept after my old one totally crashed. And the ppl who put together this new computer didn't put back in the new video card that I got for my old comp. I'm not too sure how many MB this video card I have now has. But from looking at the graphic quality I'm getting currently, pretty much tells me it shouldn't be as good as my previous card. And from what I remember, I haven't had this auto shutdown problem occur for quite awhile before the computer crashed.

It probably has to do with a BIOS/CMOS setting on your motherboard. Unfortuantely I'm not comfortable with giving instructions unless you have had past experience messing with CMOS settings.

I guess I'll have to ask my bro-in-law about this... I dunno anything about computers! lol

I'll post any updates if I figure anything out... as a reference or something :)

Yea..sorry about that! You'll need to ask your bro-in-law to check out the settings in the CMOS related to the monitor (i believe it's the wake-up function). Not sure off the top of my head as I'm not in the mood to reboot my PC to figure out what setting it is :p

    Hi

Got similar problem, just posted it in the torubleshooting section,
there aren't any replys yet but hopefully will be soon. My screen
goes black as soon as a misplaced item turns red. Well, it isn't really
going to power saving mode, but I guess it does look like it.
Seems really unlikely to me it is power-saving related, you would
have long figured out how to switch it off.

Seems more like a bug to me, maybe SP2 for Windows might help
you in this case. (I suppose you updtaed all drivers and stuff)
