Heh. I know what you mean. I've been clawed up by my danged cats quite a bit.
The one batch of kittens (the ones before the last photo of mine) are quite wild and when I tried to catch the one (Dieter) he spun around and sprung-off of my arm with his back leg. Looking back I should have just stepped on him to hold him down, because now I have a 3in scar from about my wrist going up towards the elbow (on the top of the arm).

owwwch! at least dogs give you a warning when they've had enough attention. Cats decide, act and you wear the consequences.

Up until recently (when my elderly cat, Bony, died  ) I've always lived with cats. My parents had a cat or two before I was born. There are pictures (somewhere lost in time now) of me as a baby sitting next to a cat. Then there were one or two cats following one after another for more than 50 years. With a cat you learn to move fast to avoid those painful claws. My husband has commented on how fast I can move at times. It surprises him considering I'm otherwise a quite lazy person.

Bony was an easygoing fellow, though. I didn't have to dodge his claws because he never used them on anyone.

I don't know if it's luck or what but my cats have never been the scratchy type. We had a mouser when we were little who was occasionally feisty but every cat I've had since has been, well, a pussycat. The only scratches they give are accidental.

My sister's cat is feisty, uses his claws in play, but that's because we made the mistake of using our hands as toys when he was a kitten. Never let a kitten use your hand as an attack device ... it's cute when they're little, the way they grab on and squirm, but a 12 pound cat with lethal weapons is an entirely different story.

That cat is great, though, claws and all. He and my sister do this complicated little playing ritual. He adores her.

Cats are great. Dogs are more dangerous than cats. A cat can't kill you, at least not directly. A dog, now ... don't get me wrong, I love dogs. My dog is my little sweetie. Last night I had her cuddling in my lap like a baby. Awwwww ...

You just have to get to know a cat. And don't mess with those you don't. Never pet the tummy of a strange cat, for example, even if it's offered to you. You'll regret it.

I had a friend who had Himalayans once. Or possibly Birmans. Anyway, they looked like fuzzy slippers and were the most laid-back cats I'd ever met. They weren't even catlike in their behavior. More like sentient dustmops. :D

On another thread everyone talked about ninja-like cats. I was clueless about this behavior. Apparently it's because I had a Himalayan. It is the ultimate pasha cat. Your description is dead-on, sbw! ;) They are fuzzy house shoes. For dog people, it's the perfect cat. It was so laid back my daughter could dress ours up like a doll or take it for walks on a leash...if you walked really slow. It was an adorable dumb teddy bear.

I just realized that surprised mentioned me in the first post, and I will correct you: I had a turtle. I'd wanted one so badly when I was 10, so my cousins gave me theirs--and it was in really bad condition, too! I tried to give him some UVB in time, but no go. He died within a couple weeks. And then the next time I saw my cousins, they were like, "YOU KILLED OUR TURTLE!" Talk about insensitive.

When you say laid-back, do you mean that they don't scratch very much? If I could convince my mom...then again, I have an innate fear of scratches and bites, too. Whenever Pooky (my hamster) opens his mouth, I whip my hand out of his cage faster than you can say "ouch". Maybe it's because I got a shallow gash in the back of my head when I was...3? 4? I don't know. My brother and I were having a pillow fight. We were using humongous cushions from the sofa, and since my brother was older and stronger he kept hitting me with them, backing me agaisnt the wall, and WHAMMO!

That reminds me--today I got this teeny tiny papercut on the tip of my finger, and it hurts like ****(yes, those are my own astericks). But then I skinned my knee the other day and it hardly hurt at all.

I like turtles, too. You used to be able to buy these little tiny ones that lived in small plastic bowls with a little island in the center. I had a bunch of those when I was a kid but it's illegal to sell them now. You get diseases or something. You should keep your eye out for a box turtle. They make great pets. I find one periodically making a trek across my yard.

I think all kittens will scratch. I've never had one that didn't put multiple scratches on my hands and arms. Kittens' nails and teeth are quite razor like. My Himalayan, if you attempted to rub his tummy, would wrap his front paws around your arm and scratch with his back. It seems to be a game most cats like to play. If I didn't attempt to tickle his tummy, he was basically a lap warmer or fluffy paper weight. His only quirk was that he loved blond hair. Hubby and I don't have blond hair but anyone with blond hair that visited would find Eli sitting on their head licking and purring. We rather enjoyed watching visitors try to quietly dislodge a determined fat cat from their head. You might consider getting a grown cat instead of a kitten. The pounds are full of them. You can pick one that has the temperment you want. You can even get beautiful purebred cats.
Papercuts are the worst! Amazing how something so little can sting so much.

Yes, it is illegal to sell turtles of any kind under 4" long now, because back in the--well, I don't know what decade, but sometime in the 1900s a whole bunch of retarded snot-nosed kids got their hands on tiny defenseless red eared slider turtles and shoved them into their mouths, almost immediately getting salmonella. Of course, it isn't entirely the kids' fault, as all turtles, particularly younger ones, carry some degree of salmonella bacteria, but seriously, where were their parents? As long as you wash your hands regularly after handling the turtle or it's water, it's harmless--unless you get bitten, but that's a whole different matter.

I feel funny lecturing a grown adult, but those tiny plastic bowls with the little islands in the middle are like a prison cell to the turtles. A nice 55 gallon tank is really what you'll need in the long run for a red eared slider, the turtles that most people have, as they can grow to a foot long. Box turtles are great pets, yes, but they also need nice large enclosures.

Yeah, when I went through a pet craze a while back I decided early on that the first cat or dog I ever got would be from a shelter, because there are just too many horror stories of kids forcing their parents to get them tiny and sick puppies from puppymills and then losing interest in them like a month later. Adult pets are really best for a beginner, I've heard from many websites.

One time I decided to make some lemonade, old-fashioned, with squeezing the lemons and everything, and as soon as I squeezed the slice, my finger exploded in pain! It was horrible, stinging like crazy and just--ARGH! I hate those tiny unidentifiable cuts you get who-knows-when.

Alright, it's about time that I post in this thread, as my three cats are pretty much all I ever talk about in real life. Like I said, I have three...in a 1 bedroom plus den apartment that I share with my boyfriend...can get a little cramped, but we love it. Anyway, first off there is Hailee.

Hailee is the royal duchess of the household. She's kind of one of those stuck up cats, but still a sweetheart, when she wants to be. She's a two year old Calico, beautiful cat. Her markings are light grey and a pretty tan and a white stomach. She also has the softest (and unfortunately for shedding, the finest) hair I've ever felt on a cat. She's picky, and was starting to get fat so she's now on a diet. She has been getting more active lately, so it must be working! She also makes this adorable little coo'ing noise.

Tanner comes next in line. Appropriately this cat was born on April Fools Day. He is (surprise!) tan in color. I call him my little lion cub because that's the exact shade of tan he is. Now Tanner is also a very special cat...when he was born his third eye-lid, which if you don't know cats, it's an eyelid that actually comes up from the inside corner of their eyes, was attached to high up, therefore blocking 1/3 of his vision from each of his eyes. He also when he was a kitten must have been playing with a sibling and got scratched in the left eye, resulting in scar tissue over that entire eye. So basically he only has good vision out of 2/3 of his right eye...resulting in terrible terrible depth perception...which makes for some hilarious incidents. He's always running into things. The other day he was on our balcony, with the screen door open about 6 inches so they could go in and out. I was shaking some cat treats to get them to come in and he came barreling...smack...into the screen door...poor little guy! I was laughing pretty hard though, he wasn't hurt. Tanner just picked himself up and came running for the treats.

Our true baby of the family is Addie. She's a bengal cat (grey, black, white, tan, and her tummy looks like lepard spots and huge eyes that will make her forever look like a kitten) , and basically bengals act like a feline version of a ferret. I never know where my hair ties are because she finds them and hides them. She is very talkative and regardless of the fact that most cats won't let you pet their belly unless they trust you 110%, she rolls over for anyone. Someone walks in the door and she's on her back coo'ing and meowing for attention from the new person. She is seriously the sweetest cat we have. Like I said, she's also the baby, every little noise she makes gets attention. When she was a kitten, until about age 7 months (she's just over a year now) she used to suck on our ear lobes...for like 5 minutes at a time! It was a comfort thing for her, and once she got declawed since she did the cat massage at the same time, it didn't hurt any more. I kind of miss that!

Okay, just found a better picture of Tanner that really shows off his personality. He has a wire toy with a little peice of rolled up cardboard at the end of it. We had him jumping up and down so much that he started panting! A cat panting, it is one of the funniest things you'll ever see. Anyway, sorry about the quality of the pictures, the majority of them were taken with a cell phone. But here's Tanner with his tounge hanging out!

    Pictures of our pets!

I know we've had a thread like this before, but I can't help but want to show off my babies...Hailee, Tanner and Addie. So I figured I'd start another Pet thread, with pictures! Mainly because tonight Tanner and Addie are curled up so cute on the couch. Tanner was cuddling next to me and Addie decided to come and lay on top of him and they both promptly fell asleep after a quick bath. So cute...

    Here's a picture of that.

This is our other cat Hailee, obviously not wanting to be bothered...

So here is one where she is paying more attention!

Here's Addie paying atttention, and Tanner sleeping again
    [IMG]

This one I just thought was hilarious!

As is this one of Tanner sleeping in our cat tree...this is very common for him to sleep like this...he's kind of strange

Aw bless! I just love the one of Addie with his tongue poking out a little ... aw shucks! I love 'em all :D

... and what is that orange fur thing poking out the top of the cat tree? I do hope it's not the other end of Tanner :p

Lol, do you mean the thing at the top of the cat tree? That's the brace that holds it against the ceiling, it's a floor to ceiling cat tree, and it uses tension to keep it upright.

Oh, and our Addie is a girl! :p As is Hailee of course...being that she's a calico and calicos are always females. Tanner is our only little man in the house. Addie is short for Adelaide.

Mirelly, we know you have a cat, show show!

How adorable! I love the one of Tanner in the cat tree, limbs all akimbo! And don't you just love it when they snuggle up together? They always looks so sweet and innocent! (We know better, though!)
