Unable to download from Sim Exchange as before

I have been searching for an answer to this dilemma or to find someone who has had this happen to them and haven't had any luck. I, up until recently, have been able to download houses/families from the exchange and they would load into the game as they should. Now, when they download, windows XP does not recognize the file and asks if I want to search the internet for the appropriate program etc. I can't imagine what has happened, I have requested assistance from EA..........haven't heard a thing....

    Anybody have any suggestions?
    Thanks!

Ooh, something's gone wonky there, hasn't it? How annoying is that?

Right, first thing to do is check and see what you've done in the past.

Have you downloaded or installed any new programs or games between when you last successfully used the sims exchange and when you started having trouble?

    That's the most likely cause.

Now if Windows has gotten its panties in a twist and forgotten what to do it's fairly easy to put right.

First download a nice clean new download from the exchange and save it where you usually save stuff (so you can find it again to install it)

When the download is complete go and look for the file. It should have a dark blue diamond shaped icon to indicate that Windows recognises it as a Sims2Pack file ... of course your Windows probably won't :p

Right click on the file and ...
    1. Choose "Open With"
    2. If you see a list of Recommended Programs that includes Sims 2 Body Shop Package Installer just choose that option and your troubles are over.
    3. You should be so lucky! :p
    4. Click the option "Choose Program"
    5. You'll get a list of programs to choose from. Ignore it and click the button labelled Browse
    6. You will get into the list of installed program files ... don't panic!
    7. Open the folder EA Games
    8. Open the folder The Sims 2
    9. Open the folder CS Bin
    10. Choose Package Installer and click OK
    11. That takes you back to the Open With window
    12. Make sure to check the box "Always Use This Program To Open This Type Of File"
    13. Click OK again and Bob's your uncle.
Of course if you cannot locate the Package Installer program you may have a more serious problem that might require reinstalling the game. Post back here for more advice if that's the case.
