Resolution problem, nothing working to solve issue, please help!

    Here are my specs-
Processor: Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.6 GHz
    System Memory RAM: 512 GB
Windows Version: Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 1 (5.1, Build 2600)
Free Hard Disk Space: 13.14 GB (spread over two partitioned drives)
Total Hard Disk Space: 40 GB
    DirectX Version: 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
Display Adapter: ATI Mobility Radeon, not sure about the model number
Display Driver Name and Version Number & date: ATI Mobility Radeon, 8.163.0.0, 8/9/2005
Approximate Total Video Memory: 32 MB
Game Detail: The Sims 2(DVD), Sims: Nightlife(CD)

    My problem is-
I have had Sim 2 since the day it was released and after installing it the first time, I was given the option to change my resolution to 1024x768, exactly how my default is. After a while, I lost some interest after a very long time and have since ghosted my computer numerous times. About a month ago, I reinstalled Sims 2 and the option for a resolution above 800x600 was no longer there. Almost two weeks ago, I purchased my first expansion pack for this sequel (Nightlife) and now have it installed. Still, there is no larger resolution option than 800x600. I've tried everything to increase the resolution of the game, considering it looks extremely choppy and pixely. I'm stuck on what to do, I've tried updating the driver and everything. By the way, my default is resolution is 1024x768.

OK. Here's my two cents on this one.

First I am not certain I understand your use of the term "ghosted my computer several times"

Second did you install Nighlife immediately after reinstalling The Sims 2?

Ghost, as in using NortonGhost, or whatever similar programs are out there, to make an image of your computer or certain partitioned drives. That's beside the point, though.

No, I did not because I didn't have it at the time. I just got Nightlife a few weeks ago, while Sims 2 has been on my computer for around a month.

Ah, OK. It's possible that something was stuck in your registry. This sort of problem is becoming more apparent as time goes on. Maxis doesn't really appreciate that people like to install and then uninstall the same game and so their uninstall routine isn't as neat as it could be.

If you follow the FAQ link in my signature you should quickly find a set of of instructions to perfom a full manual uninstallation (including removal of registry keys) Once done you should be able to reinstall TS2 to the same condition you originally achieved.

Note that laptop graphics are extremely sensitive to excessive heat and this might also be a factor ... maybe you have some opinions/input on that aspect. Meanwhile try the manual uninstall and reinstall one pack at a time test playing between and don't go forward until the previous tep is resolved to your satisfaction, OK?
