    downloading

 I am having problems with sims2 expansion packs. everytime I try and download a house, sims etc. it comes up with an error saying need expansion packs. I have all of them. I saw another message earlier and I did what it said 5 times and it still won't work. do I have to re-install the games again? and if so how can I save my family? a box comes up with unknown file. by the way a friend of mine has the sims game and I noticed she had things on her sims mailbox like all kinds of things to make them happy. etc. how can I get that also?
    thanks for any information.;)

    Theresa,

Too many questions, too little information, dear.

Name the expansion packs you own.

Give the name of (or the link to) the message you referred to in:
We'll talk about reinstalling if we have to ...

Those mailbox option you refer to are debugging options. With your problems I feel you shouldn't be adding to them by trying to run before you can walk. We'll leave that till later as well, OK?

I have sims2,sims2university,sims2nightlife,sims2openforbusiness and the Christmas cd. when I clicked on this forum I saw a post from a person (can't remember her name) with the same problem as mine. at first it says windows cannot find the file. ok here we go....... I can download something but when i try and install it it says (requires expansion packs) .
I have re-installed them all. is it microsoft having this problem or my computer? I hope I am making sence here this time. lol
sorry, I am on meds. and I forget certain things. please help.:)

    OK no problemo ...

Let's find out what you are downloading. Can you tell us where you have been downloading from?

If you go to a page where you have downloaded something and click your right mouse button in the web address area (where all the http:// stuff is) and choose the option "copy" then nip over to here and click the Post Reply button.

Use the little blue sphere button with the little silver links below it to post a link . When the pop up appears right click in there and choose paste and your link will magically appear. :)

Do that and I can see what you're trying to do, 'kay?

Ah, our Sim Master Kat might wanna take a look at some of those skins

Teresa. I am clearer as to what the problem is but not a huge amount closer to an answer.

It does sound like Windows is having the trouble.

    Look for:

    C:\Program Files\
    EA GAMES\
The Sims 2 Open For Business\
    CSBin\
    PackageInstaller

To make sure it actually there and working double click the icon to run the program. It should start up after a short delay and helpfully tell you to double click some custom content to install it.

Next make sure that your downloaded file has the same icon as the PackageInstaller program icon (means that Windows associates the file with the program)

If that's not the case post back and we'll see if we can work thru the next part. If they do have matching icons then I am stuck for a reason why the packages won't install unless the packages themselves are corrupted. Are you getting the same problem with downloaded Sims2Packs from every user or just the one?

Hey, I did what you said and it came up as the package installer. also, it said double click. whatever that means. they are the same in my browsing box. and yes it's on every sim, house, object. don't know what's wrong.
when I downloaded a house in the past it was always a yellow compressed file. now it looks white and sorta blank?? like unknown file.
    thanks for any information.:D

OK. This is why I asked where you were downloading from :)

Files from the Maxis exchange are .Sims2Pack files that open with PackageInstaller

So right click on one of those "white and sorta blank" files and choose the option "Open With"

A box will open. At the top will one or more "recommended" programs (although that's not guaranteed)

If one of the recommended programs is: "The Sims 2 Body Shop PackageInstaller" then that's your baby. Choose that and be sure also to check the box "Always use this program to open this type of file"

If that option isn't there, use the "Choose Program" button and scroll down the alphabetical lsit until you find "The Sims 2 Body Shop PackageInstaller". Choose that and again check the always use this program button ...

Now we only need to worry if you find that "The Sims 2 Body Shop PackageInstaller" isn't in the list ... though (in theory) that cannot happen

    Must have a serious problem

it's all there about what you told me to do.
I re-installed the sims today. is it possible they have to be in order?
because when I click on start they are not.

No, it shouldn't make a scrap of difference. Because you can edit your Start button menu and arrange all the entries any way you want.

I just noticed you mention "reinstall again"

I am now thinking that you have a Window's Registry error caused by a bad uninstall. This can be fixed but it needs a careful and methodical approach. Have you got a technically confident friend or relative who is good with computers who can help you?
