Sims2 Homecrafter Plus ACCESS_VIOLATION I've read through most of the posts on the site, but I still have this problem. Essentially Homecrafter won't start. I'm getting an ACCESS_VIOLATION error. I put an excerpt from the error and my system information below. I tried running changing the compatibility mode of the .exe file. I tried to see if ATI had a later driver for my graphic card, but I wasn't successful finding one. It can't be system memory because I have 2GB and I'm not running many applications. ACCESS_VIOLATION is a Windows error generated when an application hits a "read only" folder and Homecrafter requires read and write access. Homecrafter writes to: C:\Documents and Settings\~~\My Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2\Projects\ To my annoyance I find that my own project folder is "read only" although it works fine. Plan B (hey, don't smirk, I'm thinking out aloud here on purpose ) The error can also occur if directory is not found. Confirm that your My Documents folder exists physically on the same hard disc partition as Windows (usually C: )
Also make sure that you aren't running either TS2 or BodyShop when you try to get it going. I've had the "access denied" message come up from not waiting long enough after I exited TS2, so that Homecrafter thought I still had the game running. If your computer can handle it, it should be able to run Homecrafter and your graphics program too. I always have either Corel Painter 8 or PhotoshopCS2 running when I'm working with either Homecrafter or Body Shop. (But that may not work well for some computers without adequate memory.)
Still not working I tried to change the folder properties. For some reason, I can't change this attribute. I even tried to do it from a DOS window using the attrib command. If this is the problem, can I configure the program to use a different directory?
Sorry cmsim21, but we now have too many unknowns (too many irons in the fire) You'll need very specifically to identify the full path of the folder you're using as well as explicitly to state that you have ruled out all previously mentioned possible causes of the problem (both the 2 suggested by me and the the one suggested by Kat ... and all of those suggested between this post and your answer ... sorry if this seems picky but you wouldn't believe how bad things can get when wires are crossed.
Still Not working I understand the need for detail, so I don't think you're picky. Especially when you're trying to help me. Path Exists: C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\My Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2\Projects And YES I do log on as HP Administrator. And YES, HomeCrafter is installed on the same hard drive. It's installed here....C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\The Sims 2 HomeCrafter Plus attrib -R /D /S c:\docume~1\hp_adm~1\MyDocu~1\EAGAME~1\*.* This is the command I ran to try and change the permissions, AFTER I couldn't change them via Windows Explorer. My older computer didn't have these problems. Of course, I was running Windows XP. I got a new computer 3 weeks ago and these problems started then. Of course, it's running Windows XP Media Edition. It seemed like a pretty decent operating system when I ordered the computer. But now I have these problems. 1) I tried changing the compatibility mode of the executable. I changed it to Windows 98/ME . That didn't work. 2) I downloaded DirectX 9.0B. In accordance to Manager Josh's suggestion. DirectX 9.0B Can't run The Sims 2 Body Shop because no DirectX? Get it at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx AND rebooted. This didn't work. 3) I emailed my Graphics card provider, ATI, to see if they had a newer version of the driver I could download, still waiting to hear from the. 4) I uninstalled and reinstalled the Homecrafter plus about 3 times. Rebooting between each to see if maybe, just maybe it would work. No luck. 5) I entered a support request with my graphics card provider, ATI, just in case they have a driver download for my card that I can see because their website confuses me. I'll admit, it confuses me. 6) So now I'm posting on this website, in a desperate attempt to get this working. I really don't know what else I can do.
Thanks for all the full detail and sorry for the delay. I can well imagine how you're feeling Well the truth is I am also stumped. I must admit I had pinned most of my hopes for a rapid cure on Kat's amazingly obvious suggestion (admission of my shame that I didn't think of it too neither Body Shop nor Homecrafter will run if TS2 is also running ... I feel the problem is most likely to be a system one, either hardware related (eg: ATI driver ... not hugely likely to be honest but worth keeping hopes alive pending a reply from ATI support) or, more probably, it's a OS issue. I only skimmed the MS knowledge base for ACCESS_VIOLATION so it may be the best bet to point you there and wish you luck http://support.microsoft.com/gp/mediacenter
A Hint??? Well, even upgrading my Video driver didn't work. But I found this website: http://www.updatexp.com/0xC0000005.html It discusses how Microsoft has implemented DEP (Data Execution Prevention) which prevents some applications from using certain memory regions. The fix is to re-compile the application, with specific flags. Or turn off DEP in the boot.ini file. Wish me luck. If this is truly the root cause, it would be nice if EA would re-compile this program. IF this is the root cause.
Don't bother Well, this didn't work either. Multiple changes to the boot.ini file, yielded nothing. I even tried to add Homebuilder Plus as a exempt from using DEP, same result. I'm reduced to calling Microsoft and they'll probably charge me for nothing. I've got a computer that doesnt' run Windows Media Center that I can use. Buyer of operating systems ... Beware.
Whew! Thank you for keeping us updated cmsim. This still looks a lot like a problem related directly to that fancy dual core cpu ... have you looked into a motherboard BIOS upgrade?
I have the same processor and I've never had anything quite like that happen. (Here's to keeping my fingers crossed!)
