Any Musical Fans? Ach, not happy. I guess it's all I seem to be these days. At Stagecoach (my last term there - ) we're doing Guys and Dolls. I decided to go for the part of Miss Adelaide, as I'm told I can do a great Janice from Friends accent and apparently she's a lot like Janice. I acted my *** of this afternoon auditioning, and everyone said I was going to get the part. I gave it all I had! I didn't really want my hopes raised, but they rose anyway. And then they're reading out who gets what part, and I didn't get Miss Adelaide. I am so disappointed. I got Arvide Abernathy, which I'm told is still a good part, but not the part I wanted. And as well, one of my best friends got Miss Adelaide. I am very jealous of her, but as a talented actress, I can act happy. So, for our Guys And Dolls fans on the forum, could you please tell me what sort of a character Arvide is? Is she sarcarstic, what's her accent like, is she clever, is she a bit dumb - what? I don't have a clue about this part. A mini bio, please!
Can't really help you with the bio, Babe ... but seeing you all fired up and detrenined the get the detail you need makes me real confident that you're going to slay them in the role you've been given.
Been surfin' the web doooodes, and discovered my part is usually male, but the dance teacher told me my part can be male or female. Mirelly, I've been let down so many times now about a part I want, and every time it knocks a bit of my confidence for a while. I wanted to be Snow White - I got to be the huntsman. I wanted to be a superhero - I got an 'extra' part. I wanted to be the baddie - I can't even remember what I was! Someone who got to recite a poem, I think. So I'm used to not getting parts I want - every actor is. It's just I so wanted a decent part because it's my last term, and I wanted to make an impact in my last show. I've never really had any decent parts with SC. Don't get me wrong, I'm completely unfazed about playing a male part - I've done it several times now. Ah, well. I will act my little cotton socks off and be the best male/female Arvide. So, still - any suggestions?
My two pen'orth .... Babe, I suspect that your class is a little light on the male side (in spite of Billy Elliot ) I must admit that I thought Arvide sounded like a chap's name and Google indeed shows a raft of male performers have played the role. Quite what Arvide's role is hard to say as "he" is variously referred to as Sarah's Uncle or Grandfather. I guess Arvide is there as a parental character. Looking at this synopis: http://www.lyricsondemand.com/soundtracks/g/guysanddollslyrics/guysdollssynopsislyrics.html I would suggest that you might consider playing Arvide as a sort of Pauline Fowler ... slightly petulant, a lot feisty, difficult to budge when her mind is set. You've already been told that the part can be for male or female so maybe you are not expected to play the part as a male. Final thought. A good show (score and libretto ... Guys and Dolls fits the bill. It's not a show I have seen but the songs are well known and excellent ... Luck Be A Lady, Tonight! Awesome!) relies less on the talent of the leads and more on the quality of the supporting roles to make good the overall quality of the performance. Better still if a show crashes and burns everyone blames the director and the leads ... for you Arvide is a win-win situation. I'm glad to see you also realise the same thing by a different route and plan to grasp the role by the scruff of the neck. Good on yer!
Acting will break your heart! You put everything into an audition, and just KNOW you'd be great in the role - but the director has something completely different in mind! Still - when all the stars align, and you get into the right role, then it's like magic! The trick is to make the most of the role you get. And often, it is the minor roles or character parts that are more fun to play than the romantic leads... Good luck with your part, Babe! Or should I say, "Break a leg!" (Do they say that in England?)
Yep, they do. Funny that. I've never ever broken a bone, but do have a bit of a calcium deficiency. I hate dairy.
