For the record, Sims 2 is not damaging your PC. What is happening when you turn on the game, you are exceeding your resolution/refresh frequency rate that your monitor can accept.
Well turning the PC's power off won't do it a lot of good ... The best advice is don't keep doing it ... try using the Window's key (between Ctrl & Alt) which should restore you to a desktop view ... you should then be able to get the monitor powered back up. What is your monitor, Amias? See my FAQs (in my signature) and post a full system specs by running dxdiag ... tell us everything to with the display and video parts of the report.

No. Your video card is more than adequate. It's the monitor. You need to find a way to drop the resolution and/or refresh rate for that resolution.
Amias. There's a much newer driver for your display card. http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp For the refresh rate thing ... Right-Click on your desktop, and then click Properties. Click the Settings tab, and then click Advanced. Click the Monitor tab, and then set the screen refresh rate to 60hz

First confirm that you have updated that driver ... I gave you the link already. Next what is your current screen resolution? (it'll be in the same general section as the refresh rates) As a rule of thumb you don't want to be over 1024x768 ... if you have a widescreen monitor maybe that might be the root of the trouble ... erm what's an equivalent widescreen ratio 1366x768 is the nearest I can get ... of course a WXGA screen uses 33% more video memory per screen frame ... might be a good case for running the game in windowed mode ... anyone else got any thoughts on that? Also make sure you have the latest patch for the game from EA games Then report back if you're still in trouble

Just as future reference, each resolution has a different refresh rate. Setting one refresh rate on one resolution won't affect others. And glad we could be of service Amias
