    Backing up files...

Hey All, i just got OFB today as my first EP, because thats the only one the store had, but i plan on getting the other 2 tomorrow or sometime very soon, and i was wondering, I will be backing up my files, and if (knock on wood) i have to uninstall my game for some reason, how would i go about getting my saves back? I would backup the files by copying the entire The Sims2 folder thats in EAgames into my documnets.

    Hi Simon :)

I might be suggesting the long way round things, but what I would do (and I did this myself lol) is to copy the entire 'The Sims 2' folder in EAGames in My Documents, and paste to desktop. Change the title of this to something like 'Sims 2 backup pre EPs'.

I wouldn't install OFB until you have installed University and Nightlife first (as you said you are getting them tomorrow anyway). After you have installed each one (over your current game), if there is a problem you could uninstall each EP until you only have The original Sims 2 on your computer, then move 'The Sims 2' folder to another location, rename it to 'messed up Sims 2 with Uni NL OFB' or whatever, and copy/paste your backed up Sims 2 folder in its place in the EAGames folder (renaming it back to 'The Sims 2' ). By copying/pasting, this means that you always keep your backed up game on the desktop until you know the game works properly with the EPs.

If you have time, install Uni, and then test the game. If all seems to be working ok, install NL and check again to see if it works, and then the same with OFB. Or, if you're keen to get started on OFB, install one after the other and hope for the best lol. As long as you have a master copy of 'The Sims 2' (pre EPs) on your desktop, you can relax if there is a problem. Simply uninstall each EP until you only have The Sims 2 left on your computer, and replace the folder with a copied version of your backed up game.

Uhh, I think I repeated myself too much there lol, and I'm sure there was a simpler way of saying all that but my brain is kinda lazy today lol. :)

haha, well thanks for your help, and i already installed OFB, i was planning on waiting, but it was just to tempting:rolleyes: but i backed up my files prior to it, and saved it into my documents so if anything does go wrong upon installing the other ones, I will do exactly as you said, thanks again!

I just back up my neighborhoods folder, and usually just the one I've been playing. I don't play the three hoods that come with the game (N001, N002, and N003) so backing them up is silly. If my daughter plays I back up her hoods as well.

You should read Mirelly's FAQs on installation before adding an EP to an existing game. It's saved my butt a few times.

You should back-up your downloads folder as well. It'd be disappointing to lose all that you have, and your sims and houses won't show up right.

I really ought to update that "before installing an EP" guide.

    The basic are this:

Saved games files match the expansion pack flavour that you played (to get those saved games). So if you have The Sims 2 + Nightlife and you back up the saved neighborhoods and install University, the back ups will only be of use if you either (a) successfully uninstall Uni [I doubt this would work because Uni pre-dates NL] or (b) fully uninstall and then reinstall TS2 and then NL and then return the backed up files.

If you have TS2 alone then back ups would good to have because you can go back and reinstall TS2 clean and then return you back ups before installing University, then Nighlife then OFB. Hope this isn't getting complex :p ... doing that would mean you get to have a free play around with OFB before cleaning up and reinstalling when you get the other EPs to install them in chronological order ... waaay past my bedtime ... sorry for the typos and lack of sense

yeah, well i got Uni today, and they still didnt have Nighlife :(, but i installed Uni, and something got messed up, so i jsut uninstalled OFB and Uni, and now im down to just vanilla TS2, but i only had 2 family that barely mattered, and one of them i still have because i didnt do anything with the EPs with that one, the other family I lost though, but it really doesnt matter...im gonna wait to get NL then i will install OFB, that way i can in order, and im gonna re-install Uni tonight
