My computer freezes when I insert The Sims 2 PC DVD-ROM!

I have a big problem! I have the PC DVD-ROM version of the game. Almost every time after I insert the disc into the DVD drive, absolutely nothing happens. The Sims 2 doesn't load up. And my computer freezes, and I can do nothing but move the cursor about. This problem is occurring more and more. The few times that the game does load up, the game is fine. What is wrong?
