Graphics card help Trying this again, I believe I need to purchase a new Graphics card to have Sims 2 run om my comp what do you all suggest? Preferably one that is not too expensive, Any help greatly appreciated. Here are my specs; Win XP Pro Pentium 4 1400 MHZ 512 RAM 40 GB HD (12.5 GB free space) Radeon 7000 AGP Thank you!
At least you have an agp slot. That will let you get a few more cards than if you had the old style PCI slots only. (As opposed to the new PCI express slots, which are even better than the AGP.) Many of the older PCI express cards are being made as AGP cards now. It all depends on what you call "not too expensive." For example, you can find an AGP based Geforce 6600GT for under $100US or an AGP based Geforce 6200 for only about $60US at NewEgg for instance. Either of those would work well. You should shop around the various computer stores (retail and online). With the current pricing, you shouldn't have to settle for less than a Geforce 6200 (as opposed to when TS2 first came out and the least expensive which would work decently was the FX5200) or an ATI Radeon 9800Pro (which was "top of the line" when the game first came out.)
Thank you! Thanks so much for your help Kat, if I upgrade to one of the cards you recommend, do You think the game will run ok on my comp?
You'll need to try out various configurations of the gameplay/performance options to balance your graphics with the performance because of the processor speed. And you may only get a few people allowed at a time for parties. But it should at least run, especially if you take some of the processing load off with a better graphics card. (They recommend that you have 256mb of graphic card memory, although it will "run" with only 64mb of dedicated graphics memory.) Also, save frequently. It helps with performance when your Ram is at the lower end of the scale of "what will work." Enjoy!
I merged the threads, since they were the same thing. (Hint for future threads: It's always better to tell what kind of help you need than to just ask for help.)
will this card do? Trying to have the sims 2 run on my comp as cheaply as possible as we will be buying whole new system next year, the current one will be for my 11 year old to play games and such, found this card on ebay at a very reasonable price just wondered if you thought it would do instead of the GE force 6200 which I can't seem to find for less than $80.00 (before shipping) this one is only $30.00 nVidia FX 5500 AGP 8X 256MB DDR Video Card FX5500 Thanks a bunch!
