We really need system specs to help you. It may be that you dont have the minimum requirements to play, or it could be something else, but until we get those specs we wont be able to rule anything out.
If you want to try a manual uninstall of your game go here

i went to systemrequirementslab.com to see if my comp can run the game and it passed the minimum requirements by alot. itsaid it can run it but it still wont start. but it also said my RAM and video card dont meet the recomended requiremnt but they meet the mininum so it should run i dont understand why it dosnt.

Make sure you have the latest drivers for your video and sound cards and that you close all background tasks when you load up your game.
You're really pushing the limits with your specs, especially your graphics card.
If these things don't work then it could be an issue with your cd-rom or dvd drives.
Let me know how it go's.

I already see your problem. You don't have enough memory. 384 with 128MB allocated to graphics out of the total 512MB you have? That's way below recommended.

Am I misinterpreting this? I thought you'd only need 256MB

The Sims 2 University is an expansion. You must have The Sims 2 installed in order to install and run the game. Your system must also meet these requirements as a minimum configuration for running the game.
    • Windows XP, ME, 98, or 2000.
    • 800MHz processor.
    • 256 MB RAM.
    • At least 1 GB of additional hard drive space (4.5 GB if installing The Sims 2 and University).
    • A T&L -capable video card with at least 32 MB of video RAM and one of the supported chipsets.
    Supported video cards:
    • ATI Radeon series (7000 or better).
      • 7000, 7200, 7500.
      • 8500, All-In-Wonder 8500.
      • 9000, 9200, 9500, 9600, 9700, 9800.
      • X300, X600, X800.
    • NVIDIA Quadro series.
      • Quadro, Quadro2, Quadro4.
    • NVIDIA GeForce series (GeForce 2 or better).
      • GeForce 2.
      • GeForce 3, 3 Ti.
      • GeForce 4, 4 Ti, MX 420, 440.
      • GeForce FX 5200, 5600, 5700, 5800, 5900, 5950.
      • GeForce 6600, 6800.
If you have a processor running at 2.4 GHz or faster, the following cards should also work with the game, provided the newest drivers are installed. Note that some display options will be lowered or not available.
    • ATI Radeon VE series.
    • Intel Extreme Graphics 82865, 82915, and above.

If you haven't noticed, your ATI is not on the list and therefore means you need more than just minimum. Please note the updated specs are:

Yes I'm aware it says seasons, but it's better to follow the latest guide than older guides.

The game crashing out on start on up is nearly always a graphics device failure. Running The Sims 2 on a cheap laptop is doomed to failure (Babewithbrains14's laptop burned out, for example). Laptops get hot and when they get too hot the chips fry and when the chips are fried all you have is a $800 book-rest.

You should turn off the laptop. Allow it to cool to roomremperature (allow 1 hour) Then restart it and see if it works again. If you're lucky, it might.

If it does, turn off again and go out and invest in laptop cooling pad to avoid future overheating.

Hewlett Packar poducts may be expensive but that doesn't stop them being cheap. Those specs are not high end and therefore it is a cheap laptop. Any laptop costing less than $3,000 is cheap period

Have you ran any antivirus or spyware scans?

383mg ram might not be enough. Window use a lot of ram just to run itself.
You might want to take out a lot of special effects that windows uses. run the classic version of windows. Disable windows sounds. And don't use windows effects. Also disable virus protection, any spy ware, and by chance if you have anything Norton, it will use up a lot of system recourses. I got rid of Norton protection. It just hogged my machine. If you use the classic version of windows, you will have more memory in ram and video ram. To me Laptops are souped up word processors. Not gaming machines. I had a Compaq and always ran into trouble. It just didn't quite cut the mustered.
    regards moon.

i have a Sony Vaio with 512 mg Ram and i used to play sims with 3 expansions on it, but the game was really slow and the computer was allways getting to hot... so i buy a cooling pad witch is very cool it really reduces the temperature of the laptop you should try one of those things perhaps your computer is getting to hot...
and i agree with Odin i think your ram is not suficient :( in my new computer i had 1 gb of Ram and will all expansions i was having troubles with the game sometimes the game crashed so i bougth more Ram and now it works just fine, i found that the computer was using more than 1gb of ram  anyway perhaps you should think in play sims in another computer because laptops aren't the best solution for play games

Thank you for that information, Vega.

I have 1GB ram and 256MB display memory (on a PC) and I have problems sometimes with slow-running and overheating. The problems with laptops are ten times greater and even more so for people who try to run the game on min-spec laptops made to a budget formula.

i have 2gb of ram :D and it's amazing to play the sims, the game is really fast, my graphic card is very good too and my graphics are great.. i think that today computers are very powerfull machines and they get to hot, so i have lots of coolers, i even have a cooler in my memories, i don't want to take the risk i think that the money that i spend in the coolers was worth it because now i can play and feel safe that nothing will melt in my computer, you should try this Mirelly, computers really get hot and that is a very bad problem, i stoped playing on my laptop because of that and because it was too expensive and i don't want to crash it... my parents would kill me LOL
