Re-install (without losing any saved stuff) Uhm, hello! I'm not entirely sure that this is the right forum for this thread but I will try here, and if someone (a mod) disagress, it can always be moved. And that's all nice and well. Anyways. My problem is this. Someone in my family has messed up the game entirely. I don't know how, maybe it has to do with custom made-stuff, maybe with using boolprop codes that they can't control, that's not be discussed here anyway. The game's at least messed up. So. I figure that to be sure that this problem is eliminated, I will have to uninstall the game, and then, well, re-install it. I would, though, want to do this, without losing ANY saved content at all. I figure this might be tricky because, the neighborhoods and the university and downtown and all that are interconnected. Which would mean that all that would have to look exactly the same, in file-form as well, when I've re-installed, for it all to remain. Right? So, my question is, does anyone know how to go through with this?
If the game is messed up then it may be the saved games games that are the cause of the problem. Before planning a reinstall first remove yoyur saved games from play by a renaming trick. Open > My Documents >> EA Games The right click on The Sims 2 folder and rename it to: My The Sims 2 Now start the game itwill regenerate a brand new The Sims 2 folder and ignore the original My The Sims 2 one. See if the game is still "messed up". If it is you need to reinstall, if it isn't you need to look at the contents of the original folder and see if a bad download is causing the problem ... though the files may simply be corrupt beyond redemption. It happens to everyone sooner or later, I'm afraid. It happened to me at least twice.
Hi Humus First of all, can you describe how the game is messed up? what are the problems in the game exactly? There are other members here who know more about boolprop than I do (actually I know nothing as i don't use it lol). Hopefully we can help you to sort out the problems without having to reinstall. When you make a backup copy of your game, you need to copy the entire Sims 2 folder from the EA Games folder, and paste it to desktop. Then when you uninstall/ reinstall, you simply replace the default folder with your backup copy. However, by reinstalling and then replacing the default game folder with your current one (with neighbourhoods and downtown links etc), all you're doing is putting the same problems back into the game. If you tell us your problems in more detail, we can hopefully give you some solutions.
Uhm, well... Some of the pop-up-messages don't show, which means that you don't get paid for going to work, for example. A lot of the tiny pictures and stuff (that show what the sim is doing, talking about, working with etc.) have disappeared or gotten totally blurred. Purses are crawling around on the floor... And some other weird stuff I can't recall. And concerning that thing about changing the name of the game folder... How do I go about that, if there are several folders? One "The Sims 2" and one "The Sims 2 Nightlife" .. ?
Hi, Humus. I think you're looking at program files. As Mirelly said, it's under My Documents. Start Menu > My Documents > > EA Games > > > The Sims 2 Don't change the names of the EA game files under Programs.
Sorry I missed seeing humus' query. Lynet is correct. But if your mum made the same mistake and deleted files in the Program directory then a reinstall is probably your only way out of difficulty. You need to do the folder renaming test, which I described earlier though, because it takes only a few minutes to do to test if the game installation is sound or not.
I will as soon as I get to my gaming computer. Haven't done it yet though because I missed the My Documents-thing, and checked where the game is installed instead.
Really sorry for spamming, but I can't find the edit button again. For some reason. I tried renaming the folder and, well, yeah, it seemed to be working fine. So, that would mean that there is something wrong with the saved content, right? What was that about my mum btw?
