I am not surprised that you are having trouble. Laptops are not ideal for running heavy graphic games like The Sims 2. First up ... have you got any downloaded custom content? This takes a lot of time for the game to prescan before it begins loading, proper. I'm not sure of the situation with downloads and University, which was the first expansion pack, some things have changed a bit since then. University or any expansion pack typically requires a higher specification computer to run the game than the base game. With University the difference is not so critical, but even so, more power is better as the game will chug a little without it. The minimum system requirements for the game state: Basically this means that your processor is just too slow (yours is 1.5 GHz). Also 256 MB of RAM is a bit woeful ... Windows XP will have used most of that before you even try to start a game. When you start The Sims 2, the poor old computer is having to swap chunks of game code and Windows code in and out of the spare 4.43 GB of hard disc space ... this will take a lot of time. There are probably several dozen little tweaks you could make that would shave a few seconds off the loading time ... you might even get it down to a few minutes, but that won't alter the fact that the real trouble starts when you try to load up an actual neighborhood ... and then (even worse) a house with sims living in it ... because then the computer is gonna actually have to do some serious computing with its chips crammed fuller than a tick at a dog show. It would be like asking the winner of a hotdog eating competition to enter a marathon immediately after his last dog ... he'd fall flat on his face and barf! I am dubious/curious that your cousin has the same computer ... :(
Clean up the hard disc, get rid of superfluous files to increase free space to at least 33% of total, defrag the hard disc, stop all unneccessary services, tune the virtual memory usage. But like I said none of these will solve the problem that the game will still suck on your computer. Please do not grasp at straws and ignore the headline advice. The headline is this: Your computer is not suitable for playing the game.
