Two qestions about cities Hi, Two days ago I heard for the first time about the awesome game that is Spore. I've since watched the gdc video and read as much information as I could find about it. Currently I have two main questions (ok, I've got dozens, just like everybody else, but these will do for now The information I've found mentioned there will be no floating cities. Is there any particular reason for this apart from gravity? Surely once you're able to build a UFO the same antigravity device could be put into your buildings. For my first race I'm planning a flying species so once they get advanced enough (I can understand not being able to make flying huts) I'd like to make a floating city. Does anyone think you could just make building meshes that are off the ground to simulate floating? Or at least be able to make the entrance above ground level? The other question is about city size. In the gdc video all three cities were pretty much the same size and relatively small. Would it be possible to keep expanding your city until eventually you had a city covering the globe (think Coruscant from Star Wars)? It would add a lot more depth to the simcity part of the game I think to have a city larger than about 15 buildings.
Most of the information is really unknown since the game isn't finished just yet. I beleive flying creatures will have ground cities however. (Lots of technical issues such as your enemies wouldn't really be able to attack now would they?
Well, so far it appears anyone can build flying machines. If not, everyone could have access to rockets so being able to attack shouldn't be that much of a problem. I just figured since we're going to have a game that can simulate virtually any environment you can think of there should be no artificial restrictions on more fantasy-ish/impossible locations.
if it's that big of a problem, learn to mod. I expect there to be a fairly large modding community for this game; I hope so, it can make it more entertaining.
HmMmMm. If there will be lots of mods and custom meshes, etc, that players will download, will they all show up on other players' screens? Do you think there will be an option to not display custom graphics/mods? Hope someone finds this out... This way it'd be much easier to get custom stuff without having to download it yourself! :silly: Plus, I HOPE there will be floating building meshes. Maybe cool custom space ships, too... And lastly, I don't see why a city couldn't fill up a whole planet, though it'd probably also depend on the planet's size itself. But let's not be too sure about this stuff...
Flying buildings (or floating for that matter) would be nice, but still what about armadas, I don't want just one space ship I want thousands. :grumpy:
I didnt read enough to have seen anything about floating aquatic bases, but that would be cool. The closest thing I could come up with to flying cities were ones suspended on realy high poles, like bird houses
Thats probably possible, because in the building editor you can stretch, or shrink buildings as you please...so just make a building with a long, thin base and put the inhabitable building on the top. :spin: (or atleast I think you could)
another question if u can have land cities and underwater cities can u have cities floating on the surface of the water?
There will be no flying cities. Will said it. Why? Probalby the same reason there aren't dyson spheres or ring worlds. Unneccessary complexity without any real gameplay advantage. What would be the advantage? What if you can't use vehicles that fly til you reach a certain point, can you not hit cities? Can they not fly until after that? If they can't fly til UFO then what's the point? They aren't positioned any better or any easier to defend then ground cities (actually less so), ESPECIALLY against enemy UFOs.
It is possible of course, but I'd think of flotaing cities as the flying version of water cities. the same gameplay problems would exist I think as with flying cities (going underneath it, and other things). I'd say it's not likely.
I would just like to put my two cents in and add that the game itself IS a modding community. Unless you're content with drifting around, looking at what everybody else has done once you reach Interstellar, of course. And you can always 'take' this stuff to populate your planets, but to me the real fun of the game is the creation and distribution. I know I, for one, will be making absolutely everything I have the energy to make. Who needs a premade 'buy' menu? :laughing2:
Of course, but all the editors and gameplay is limited at SOME point, and I think flying/floating cities are not going to be included. In terms of mods, people are speaking really high of mod possibilities, and I really don't see them becoming very large. The way Spore works it'd be hard to have this game have extensive mods since the AI would have to probably be tweaked and only CIV4 has an option to REALLY tweak AI a lot, but even that is still promised, it hasn't been released yet. So I'm not expecting anything like that for a while at least.
yep, though we will probably all at least once make one of the "standing on a stick" or long "bridge" connected to land, it would just be based above the water or in the air
