What was Will Wright inspired by to make Spore?

Seen the idea behind Spore somewhere else? Post it here!

Has anybody seen "Alien Planet", the documentary on the Discovery channel?

    Check it out here:

After I saw this, I couldn't get it out of my mind as to how similar it is to Spore. It almost seems like Will Wright flipped his TV on one night, saw this movie, then came up with Spore.

If you need something to tide you over before Spore is released, buy this DVD, you won't be disappointed.

    Um... well, first off, welcome.

Second.. Yeah, Will created the Sims game franchise. From Sim City in the 80s to today with TS2, ect.. I think Spore is just the next step, combining most of the games he's already produced with other genres.

Spore was originally going to be called Sim Everything, so I guess that explains it better.

    Yes, welcome!!

I have seen this, and it's OUTSTANDING! Also 'Extraterrestrial' on the National Geographic Channel. But I agree with you both, will had to have had some kind of inspiration......whether it's the question, "what if sims were creatures?" or the statement: "hmmm......my own creatures, hahaha." But he did it and it's going to be a great game, and alien planet is fascinating.

I believe Will Wright said that he started his reshearch about 6 years ago. He was inspired by the Drake Equation, a way to estimate the number of civilasations in the galaxy, we can commnicate with at any given time.

He was also inspired by the field of Astrosociobiology, who deal with evolution of lifeforms on other planets in the universe.

Lastly, the SETI project have him wonder about life in the universe.

I would say this is his three main souces of inspirations. Alien Planet was premiered May 14th 2005, roughly around the time of the GDC where Spore was revealed.

i just listened to the gamingsteve podcast and gs says that will's inspiration was astronomy pictures of nebulas, galaxys, etc. Maybe the space phase and the art you see when you're in space was inspired by astronomical photos.

*looks out window* Well, there's the universe up there. And... we're creatures. Pfft, blatant rip-off of Spore, that is. Perhaps there's a god just trying to play Will Wright with us.

Haha, yeah. What a rip-off artist. I just hope we don't end up like Jurassic Park. *snarl*

But seriously, I heard something from Wright about how he always looked at astronomy pictures but never really got the depth of the nebulae and all the other stuff. So he wanted to make a game where one could see the depth and 3 dimensions of heavenly bodies. I guess he built the rest around that?? I dunno, just a thought, but I know he said that somewhere.

yeah, that's probably right IB. The author of holes, In his autobiography, said that he wanted to create something around a desert with a desert theme and look how that turned out. Same prinicple
