I'm confused...what do you mean by import them into a new expansion? They stay in the game when you add a new expansion. Your families don't disappear when you add a new expansion as long as you've saved the house before exiting.

I should add, you should always back up your files before installing a new expansion though; that also helps to insure your families will be there in case an install goes wrong.

last time i tried that my custom sims went missing which is why i want to keep these custom sims when moving to a new expansion pack, i save and save to my hearts content but i find if i load a new expansion my custom sims go missing.

If I'd need a pack of a specific Sim, I would use the clone/package option in Bodyshop. (Clone the Sim in question, package it and delete the clone afterwards)
That still only gives you the Sim without any family ties etc. but that could be corrected in the worst case through SimPE

For neighbourhood-backups I use SimPE (b/c here it saves the complete hood incl. all sims and their resp. data...as they are in game and it sure is more comfortable than packing up all those N00x folders manually ;)
Just make sure you use the correct SimPE version for your Expansion
(The version for BV is not official yet, so you only get it through Quaxy's forum as a member his QA program)
