    game crashes when saving

I have no problem playing the game, but whenever I try to save, it crashes and forces my computer to restart. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, and it allowed me to save once, and then started crashing again.

    Any suggestions?

We need more information to help you out.

When it crashes while saving, does it crash on a particular family or does it do it to all of your families?

Have you been modifying anything with the game such as changing sims attributes with SimPe or downloading files?

What error message is it giving you when it does crash?

It crashes on every family. No, I haven't been doing any modification. I can't tell what the error message is, because it flashes a long string on my screen for about 5 seconds before restarting the computer.

Ok, that helps. This might be a lengthy process and a lot of Q&A before we can figure out the problem...

Can you run a DXDIAG on your system and post the information here to see what your specs are? To get that information, you go to the Start Menu, select Run then type in dxdiag into the box. Save the information to a text file and post it here.

Also, has the problem just started or has the game always done that too you? Which version of The Sims 2 are you running, (CD, DVD, Deluxe, expansion pack...etc).

Hopefully we can get you back on your feet :)

    Thanks for the help. :)

The game has always done it to me. (I just got it for Christmas.) I'm running the CD version.

    Diagnostic is attached.

Jud seems to have gone to bed. ;) A quick look at your dxdiag reports suggests nothing obvious. You could do with more memory is the most obvious thing I can suggest.

Beyond that I might be concerned that this is a Windows thing.

Can you double click My Computer and then right click on the disk Local Disc C: and choose the option "Properties"

Is there enough free space on the disc. You need a minimum of about a quarter of the disc to be free (in the pink). That proportion is a very rough rule of thumb and it depend on how big the drive is.

eg I would recommend the following:

20 GB Hard Drive. Keep 5-6GB free (25%-30%)
40 GB Hard Drive. Keep 8 GB free (20%)
80 GB Hard Drive. Keep 10 GB free (12.5%)

Larger drives should be safe with 10% free space ... but the fuller the disc the more chance of error and crashing.

Personally I always keep 25% free regardless of the size of the drive.

This is truly going to be difficult to figure out... I can give you a suggestion - not sure if it will work but it is worth a shot. On your desktop, right click your sims icon and select Properties. Look at the Target line and it should be something like "E:\The Sims 2 Bon Voyage\TSBin\Sims2EP6.exe" (it varies on the location you installed it and which expansion/version you have." Put a space after the .exe" and then type -w. This will run in window mode. Try playing the game and see if it still crashes.

    Didn't help.

I have about 30% of my hard drive free, and it's recently been defragged.
