An 8.8-Magnitude Earthquake Rocks Chile When I woke up earlier, I read news that reminded me of one of my bus driver friends whose family lives in Santiago, Chile... From the BBC: For more details and pictures, it is all on the BBC front page: http://news.bbc.co.uk/ -- also, for the article, it's on http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8540289.stm with one video.

The damage is great. Dang. This has been a really bad year for Earthquakes. Friday, a 7.0 sized earthquake strikes the southern portion of Japan Saturday, an 8.8 hits Chile and a 6.5 hits Argentina. Let's not forget the on that hit Haiti recently too, which was also a 7.0
Today marks one week since the massive and one of the most violent earthquakes of all time rocked central Chile. Right now, reports from various news agencies said that nearly 800 people have been killed from the devastating earthquake that has rocked near the city of Concepcion, but the official count by the government has posted the death toll at 452, way below estimates. More deaths and lost people may still occur since there are areas near Concepcion are still cut off from the main roads as a result of the shaking. Now, many governments, including the United States, and political organizations, including the United Nations, are working with the Chilean government to help start the long recovery process that would cost billions of dollars in repairs and rehabilitation.
