    The Sims 2 Online Functionality?

i am very psyched about this and will most likely have it reserved way before the release. but my question is, what kind of online functionality does it have? anyone know? will it just have the usual house and family database like in The Sims? or will it include more like say maybe a meeting place ingame which has a TSO kind of feel where other real people come to meet and greet?

    Hi there, VChat20..

I posted a thread a while ago roughly about this same thing. I had the idea of having an online 'mall' area where our Sims could go and meet other Sims and hang out, shop, eat, etc.. It would be similar to the Downtown area in Hot Date, the only difference being that every Sim you met belonged to someone else in the world. Real similar to TSO:) This 'mall' could be on a server, and if people wanted to create shops or restaurants inside the mall, you had to pay a small fee every month; almost like rent for using the space. It was just an idea, and I love it if something like this actually happened. I would love to start it up myself, but am too poor to afford any kind of server:D .

Sorry, that didn't really answer your question. I'm not sure if Sims2 has that functionality, but since it has so many new features, I don't see why online capabilities couldn't be added, or incorporated in some way. Maybe ManagerJosh might know, since he attended the Sims2 University last Friday. I do hope it's possible, though - maybe my dream 'mall' might come true:D

i do see it having more online functionality than ts1, but i wish it would have the online community feature like you explained. and maybe as an added bonus if a friend wants to visit your sims they can call up your sims, you answer the phone and say yes or no. if yes, your computer acts as a server and they connect and end up at your house. nice idea imo but would require it to check for a net connection at startup. it would also need a main server still to keep track of who's online and who's not, etc. etc.

btw, anyone know when the next ts2 chat is?

But would it actually be better having it online? I mean you could get abused online, and you could get hackers, and before you know it you will be too scared to touch the game

As far as I know, Maxis has managed fairly well dealing with issues like those you're concerned about... they do already have the Sims Online, and the house and family exchanges etc. they run on the official Sims website....

yeah. many things like that wouldnt be a problem. what id really like to see is the central meeting area already in ts2 be online so you can meet others.

A mall would be ideal. I'm pretty sure some one's already mentioned that, but it's a good idea

yes, but again, getting a way to get online is the major problem.

just a quick brainstorm. with the help of the maxis/ea servers and your site login's, have a kind of buddy list inside ts2. when you load up ts2, it logs you in and shows you as online. if any friends are online you can invite them to go to the meeting area and interact with each other's sim's there. it wont be massive so you wouldnt have tons of people, but you can interact with friend's sims.

Can't they just introduce, a chat room where you meet a whole bunch of strangers. It's just that many of my friends aren't Sims2 obsessed (yet), so if I go online I'll have to start from scratch, with meeting new people, and I'm not very good at being bearable. I am quite a boring person and also very annoying, so I dont stand a chance.

a chat room could very well be part of it, but a buddy list needs to be there as well for friends.

Like Vchat20 said about the user list. I think it would be great to have a built in user list, this way if one person needs help with the game, there would be a easy way of getting ahold of another player who is playing. I think because of the graphics, it would be hard to have a TSO2. TSO2 would totally lock down a computer.

Yeah. But hopefully The Sims 2 Expansion packs introduce online facilities, because I am getting annoyed with the fact that the PS2 versiojns of the sims has online capability. I mean come on! PS2s werent meant to be built for online use, yet they've managed to beat the computer....

True that PS2 wasn't meant for that purpose, and I also like the idea about the 'mall' I think that would be an awesome feature of teh game. Except it would be best if it didn't have a monthly charge like TSO. Because of the charge I didn't buy it. heh... wat can I say. I'm a cheap-o. And its not like everyone who plays teh sims has money most of us r just teens who are too young to work and too old to be kids.

Like I said I think the mall is a good idea, but for it to work it needs to be cheap or more likely free, that way people will be alot happier to use it.

There is a problem with online some people who don't realy like the sims 2 (weirdos from mars) will traumatize peoples sims. Besides sims was not meant for online in my opinion.

I think it was about a year or so ago but they had a story on CNN about "griefers" on the sims online. Griefers are people that log on with the sole purpose of making other people's experience Hell.

Via direct connection maybe up to 30 or so users could connect via direct connection? sort of role play online with a select few users? Not just random people from the net:p Or maybe even make a mod where users can take their sims online to chat with other users and use their sims as avatars?
