comp being very very slow Hola... my comp has been real real slow for the last few weeks and i cant figure out how to fix it. I think it might be all the stuff xp automatically saves and then doesn't delete.. i've tried all the norton system works stuff.. anti-virusing, doing a spy ware scan, and plan on doing a defrag tonight. I was just wonderin if anyone knows how to get rid of the extraneous stuff that xp makes (like old restore point files and stuff). Thanks.
about 40 things are listed in the background. most of them take up under 5,000k mem usage. hpoevm08.exe Studio.exe hpohmr08.exe ADUserMon.exe ccApp.exe hpotdd01.exe HPZipm12.exe AUpdate.exe Imgicon.exe (Zip disk software) trillian.exe Netscp.exe hpoSTS08.exe EXPLORER.EXE cidaemon.exe ADService.exe SVCHOST.EXE (system) tcpsvcs.exe nvsvc32.exe NPROTECT.EXE (norton?) navapsvc.exe AppServices.exe cisvc.exe alg.exe CCEVTMGR.EXE SPOOLSV.EXE SVCHOST.EXE (local service) SVCHOST.EXE (network service) taskmgr.exe SVCHOST.EXE (system) SVCHOST.EXE (system) RUNDLL32.exe LSASS.exe SERVICES.exe WINLOGON.exe CSRSS.exe SMSS.exe DvzMsgr.exe System System Idle Process long list :| Wonder why there are so many SVCHOST.EXE.... prolly half or so of the above list were system stuff.. and randomly a new process would pop up and then disapear a little later. Thru out most of this the cpu usage stayed below 20% with a few spikes.
You might wanna try to delte some things u dont need. Also if you dont have a cable modem u might wanna thing about it.
SVCHOST.EXE is Norton Anti Virus (from memory) it shouldn't be there more than once ... a reboot should do the trick ... but before rebooting ... ask yourself the following question. Have you ever installed a program called Trillian? If the answer is no then you may have a bigger problem ... :( I am not familiar with it but a Google search on trillian.exe produces a lot of security alerts and other issues. NOTE that Symantec say that it may appear to be present as a result of a number of malicious worms. See Symantec Security Response Pages (click here) A severe slowdown in a computer is very often the first sign that have been infected with a mailer type worm. However as you already have Norton you're probably OK so the next question is. What's your system specs? How much RAM? CPU Speed? Size of hard disc? AND most important of all ... what % of hard disc is free? I'll bet the disc is pretty full ... you wouldn't have an expensive zip drive if you weren't running out of room on your HD. If you can aim to free up at least 20% then defrag again ...
I have installed trillian, and never presented a problem before. 512 MB Ram 1.2 Gz P3 one 10gig (windows is on it) - 1.33GB free one 20gig - 4.8GB free Btw, my dad was the one who put the zip in.. when we got our comp a few years ago. it's only a 100mb one. I was exploring around in System Properties and noticed that under User Profiles the name BART\Jake (me) has a size of 255MB.. what's in the size? For the most part the slowness has been fixed. However, it takes a couple minutes to log into my account when the comp is first started up..
