Setting default Custom Content Folder?

    Setting default Custom Content Folder?

I'm having fun with Body Shop, but I've got one pretty significant problem I can't figure out how to deal with. I've installed Body Shop to my F: drive instead of the C: drive where I have almost no space left. However, when I make custom content, it automatically sets the file paths to the C: drive in the My Documents folder, and this is a problem!!

Has anyone else successfully installed Body Shop in a different hard drive other than the default C: AND gotten the default custom content folder path set to the proper hard drive also? I don't see anywhere in Body Shop itself where it gives you the option to set the file path for where to save stuff to. :(

I hope I'm missing something obvious, or I won't be able to make any more custom content as I'm out of SPACE on my C drive! (I've got almost 9 GIGS free on my F: drive though.....)

    Im also having the same problem, I only have free space on my F: drive too. >.<;

Well, I don't know if it works yet but today I'm going to try making some custom content projects, and then see if it lets me move the folders to the F drive after I'm FINISHED working on the project... I'm HOPING that when it says it's uploaded to the game, that means it's putting the finished files in with the program files where my Body Shop is installed... I figure if I move a folder from the My Documents C drive and then my custom content still shows up and works in Body Shop then that would mean I could work on a FEW projects at a time saved on my C drive, then delete or move finished ones to my F drive after they've been uploaded to the Body Shop.... or something like that.

I'd still LOVE to do it the easy way and have a way to re-set the file path for where to save in the first place though!

Thats too time-consuming and kind of complicated, so I freed up some space on my C: drive, and re-installed BodyShop there.

Now, when I export a project, it stills goes to a seperate directory, it goes to My Documents to be exact, what the heck? o.O

Yes, that's my problem, it seems to be set to export the projects to the C: drive My Documents folder no matter WHERE the actual program is installed! :(

I didn't get a chance to test my folder moving experiment today as we had a HUGE thunderstorm so I had to shut off the computers and light candles... just in case. We're still in a flood watch here but the rain has let up a little and no more thunder and lightning, so I'm back online! :D

Fae. Its possible to can move your My Documents folder to a new drive if your C drive is straining for space. On my last PC I had two HD a 40GB and an 80GB. These were partitioned so that C:\ and D:\ were on the 40GB. C had Windows, D had downloads and back ups. The 80GB drive had drives E, F, and G. E Was program Files; F was My Documents, G was a mirror of My Documents ... woohoo paranoia rools. Double back up :p

My new TS2 ready puter has an unpartitioned 110GB HD (too big for my copy of partition magic). When I can summon up the enthusiasm I'll eventually add one or both of the old machine's Hard drives to my current ones distinctiveness ... oooh ... how 'Borg-sih' does that sound?

Did you have to do anything unusual to set the file paths to programs could still find your My Documents folder or did you just cut and paste or move it? It would be GREAT to have my My Documents folder on the F: drive! I've been stuck with it being the default place for the digital camera pictures as well and between that and this... well... it was only a 6 gig partition in the first place and it's FULL of the operating system and program files alone!

Your computer sounds much more organized than mine. :D

Does BodyShop actually find it if you move it to another drive? I think that would be my concern about moving it (as the program may not see it if it's only looking on the C drive.) It all makes me very glad I don't have my drive partitioned.

Well, yesterday I spent quite some time trying to work out this problem... I managed to copy the My Documents folder onto the F drive, but then it would NOT let me delete the original from the C drive so that didn't work out! :( :( Waaah!

My husband has suggested that I may have to backup EVERYTHING and completely wipe out the whole hard drive and partitions and re-partition it with more room on the C drive just for Sims 2 and Bodyshop. Ak! :( But all this would be SO SIMPLE if they would ONLY give us the option of WHERE to save files to in the Body Shop program itself!!! Aaaaaah!

    Maybe they'll release another version?

    OR

Maybe we'll just have to live with it... v.v

Oh I hope and pray they release another version! Or a patch! Or SOMETHING!! ... I'll be so sad if I have to live with it and reformat and reinstall EVERYTHING on my computer because of something as small as a default save path.... sigh. :p

Well, I don't see a point in leaving BodyShop on my computer, will it still work if I copy it on a CD? Wait...is that actually allowed even?

I would think it would be ok to make a copy of the installation file and backup your custom content to cd so you don't lose it, but don't try to sell it or anything like that because THAT would be illegal! I don't think it would work to try to copy the installed program to a cd though... I think that would mess things up with the registry like when my friend tried to move her sims 1 game from one hard drive to the other instead of uninstalling and reinstalling.

I moved My Documents like this:

How to move "My Documents" to your home drive

    • Right click on My Documents on the Desktop and select Properties in the menu
    • In the My Documents Properties window select the Move... button
    • In the Browse For Folder window open (click on the + sign) My Computer and select the H: drive
    • If you want to have it in its own folder in your home drive open H: drive and select the H: drive. Select New Folder and rename it to the desired name (for example "My Documents")
    • In the Browse For Folder window select the OK button
    • Back in the My Documents Properties window select the Apply button, the new Move Documents windows opens which warns you, that the Documents will be moved, select Yes, depending how many documents are save there, it will take some moments to copy them
    • Again back in the My Documents Properties you see in the Target: field the new path (for example H:\My Documents) where My Documents points to now, select OK to close it
From now on all documents which you save in the My Documents folder will be save directly on your home drive (respectively the folder you created).

I did all this described above, and now that My Documents -folder is on G:drive. And Body Shop found everything!

It is a bit odd, because Install Wizard lets you choose the place of the program itself, but not the folder for Projects, downloads and stuff like that. And that is what takes the space!

Thanks Delenn and Sorry Fae ... I should've explained better how to go about the business of moving "My Documents" ...

Mostly the instructions work for any version of Windows but beware of the fancy-pants versions (eg XP) Firstly you have to be the system administrator to do anything like this and second My Documents exists only in users profiles eg : c:/documents and settings/user_name/My Documents ... this kinda complicates things ... if you don't pay acreful attention to what you are doing/

You can do most anything if you know how. In "Windows Explorer" keep clicking the "up" button. This should be Desktop

In the list of files and folders iin the fight hand pane you should see:

    My Documents
    My Computer
    My Network Places
    etc.

Each of the these can be right clicked and from the menu that opens you can rename. eg if you have a home network you can rename My Computer to match the name the computer uses for the network

You also have access to a "Properties" dialog where you need to be more careful but (if you are careful you can change things at a more fundamental level.

Take My Documents. If you have only used the 'rename' option you may be surprised to see that it seems to think (in the "Properties" dialog) that it is still thinks it is called "My Documents".

This is because all you did was to rename a shortcut Which is fine if all you wanted/needed to do was to change the 'appearance' of the lists in Windows menus.

In other words Delenn is right ... use the properties dialog.

Incidentally. I think that Fae was also perfectly right and correct in "copying" her My Documents folder to the new drive.

No computer operation is fail safe ... especially not Windows ones. Always best to work on a copy rather that on your only copy.

So the best (recommended by Moi) method of moving My Documents to another drive is
First copy My Docs to new location
Second In Windows explorer, at desktop, (or just from the actual destop view if you like!) follow Delenn's instuctions to persuade Windows to use the newly made copy as the My Documents folder.
After that you can do what you like with the original C: drive My Docs folder ... but one good bit of advice if you have the space is to move to a location with plenty of space ... you can then regularly back-up the contents of your My Docs by just copying the one to the other checking to option "Yes To All" when you're asked if you want to replace files that have changed.

NOTE WINDOWSXP users. (And I may be wrong about this ... cos I haven't actually moved my My Docs ... it is renamed as "Abz Stuff" but all the directory paths have been taken directly from my Windows Explorer address bar where I have only chnaged the user name from my user name :cheeky: to 'user name' or even Fae Luna ... LOL)

So where does WindowsXP think that My Documents is? If you look at the directory structure it is show as being at:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\My Documents

I may be wrong here but I think that it would be ill-advised to try to move the C:\Documents and Settings\user-name(s)\ folders from the C:drive.

I don't think that Windows would have any trouble coping but hey!" best not to temp fate. But .... :tired: ...

Windows is happy to regard the 'My Documents' bit in C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\My Documents as a shortcut to another drive.

Again. If you follow Delenn''s instructions and Work From Desktop this is what you will achieve so ... even after you have moved My Docs from C: to Z: Windows XP will still seem to be saving your stuff in:-
    C:\Documents and Settings\Fae Luna\My Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2 Body Shop\Projects

Final Note (where's the emoticon for crawling in an exhausted way? :tired: :tired: :tired: )
My My Documents is called Abz Stuff but I haven't forced this deep into WinXP's psyche ... I don't care what it calls it so long as it doesn't forget where it is. Abz Stuff is what I see when I look for the My Docs menu ... (For me) WinXP still saves using the pathname C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\My Documents\

i'm just worried what we are doing will screw up Windows. I haven't looked into the how Windows manages stuff, but doing that may screw up your computer as you are tampering with system files.

Plus we don't know what Maxis has in store for the game too. There maybe a reason they aren't telling us on why it needs to be in that folder, like each game having individualized custom content.

Good point Josh. Never tamper with system files. However My Docs are not system files and I see no 'real' harm in moving them ... documents are meant/i] to be 'tampered' with. ;)

Best advice to anyone (regardless of how much space you actually have).
    1. KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid LOL)
    2. Its better to mess up a game installation and have to reinstall it than it is to reinstall Windows
    3. From #1 and #2 above NEVER allow the contents your My Documents to get outgrow your removeable storage device .. such as a Zip drive or CD/DVD writer.
    4. Eeven if you have plenty of disc space?extra hard discs it is probably still better to leave MY Docs on the C; drive and keep it slim and trim by moving stuff like music and big files out and into other drive spaces or partitions. (My PC has nearly 5GB of my data on it and its less than 3 months old. More than3/4 is audio/video and should really be transferred to CD rom. Over 2/3 of the rest is "clutter" that doesn't need to be there either ... so if you'll excuse me I'll go practise what I preach...

Well I finally have it all worked out thanks to everyone here!! :D I changed the Properties of where the computer saved the My Documents folder content to. The C drive is happy and has room now. My Windows system is happy because it still has a My Documents folder to automatically save stuff to. And I'm happy because I don't have to pick and choose which few custom content things I want to use at a time!! :D Whooo-hooo! This has also helped my situation with our digital camera saving to the My Documents too, I had been moving older folders of pictures to the other drive to make room for new ones and now I don't have to do that either!!
