Working Around Limitations OK This is not any sort of a problem. I've been looking at ways of getting around some of the things that cannot (on the face of it) be done. For example. My first 3 or or 4 attempts to put a window in a basement were failures. Either I couldn't even place the window or else it refused to let light thru. Yesterday I succeeded. I still don't know why ... but meanwhile ... Now I found another quirk of the game's logical interpeter. Windows on fully enclosed courtyards, don't seem to want to let light thru either. Indeed all the build mode really wants your to do is roof it over. LOL Here's a screenshot of a castle that I threw up today to see if the principle works. If anyone wants to play around with it you can download it from the exchange - click link below ...
well... now that u mention LIMITATIONS...i had this idea to put a pool into a sunken level in this bit of my first house (it's crap, it's failed, don't ask). the thing is, i used terrain tool to lower ground in, and then when i tried to stick walls around it, i had some major issues...so i then just tried tiling them, but that flattened them out... now, not sure if this will help anyone, but here goes: if you do the tiling as part of a room (shift+click thing) then it tiles the surfaces so that they aren't grass, but it won't flatten it down. hope that helps someone...and send the house ideas along...i want to keep building now... ps if someone has created the following: - a waterfall city type neighbourhood - elf skins of any description (particularly ones that you are happy to let other ppl tinker with) - an elven settlement type thing - a futuristic type neighbourhood - a modern, contemporary house please tell me and share some pics...much appreciated...thank you all
To make a lowered area you put in a complete foundation, then remove the center part of it (but leave the foundation of the outerwall area). Then you can level it inside and put in stairs. I don't know if it will let you put a pool in that area, however. I may have to try that in my next mansion.
I have a modern house, I don't know how big you need it, but you can find it here: http://thesims2.ea.com/exchange/lot_detail.php?asset_id=7525 Hope you like!
ok..here goes much thanks ij, had a look but i'm more for an excessive overkill house...i want something crazy... and if you cut out a chunk from a foundation it won't let you put a pool in. the other thing is, this pool was...sunken...like the norm floor height was like a balcony to it...so yeah.
more lims... can't put furniture against diagonal walls...grrr incidentally, i'm trying to do something wild and crazy...i'm looking through various bits of final fantasy art for some sort of inspiration...i just don't want a bog-standard house..like...that oriental pagoda house was cool and unique and i want to get something along that sort of idea: odd but works
mirelly: Out of curiosity, when you bore holes for the moat like you did in that castle, do you notice any particularly unusual terrain artifacts when you view the lot from the neighborhood view? On my system, I find that if I bore holes, for, say, basements, or moats, that are too deep, too close to the certain edges of the map, the surrounding terrain, on the neighborhood view, looks like it's sunken in a very strange way: You'll see things like steps floating in the air, or possibly on a column, like a bad case of receding gumlines. This becomes particularly apparent if you pave over the ground with some kind of patterned tile, and then see the resulting "warpage" in the neighborhood view. In the lot play/build mode, everything appears fine, though. Have you seen this?
Hi JM, I was going to say no ... but then I remembered that one of my lots looks very odd when seen in the neighborhood view. It is a sloping lot and there is a swimming pool at the back of the plot that required the corner of the plot to be seriously raised to level the ground. In the neighborhood view the water looks like it is self supported. While we are thinking about 'hood views ... I have a fairly high end system and I have been experimenting with cameraman mode in the neighborhood view ... am I the only to notice that it is possible to create a movie that looks like your sim is driving thru the 'hood? Could this be a feature for an EP, I wonder? A minimal amount of new control features would be needed to make the driving work and ... I've been trying to work out why diagonal roads are not supported .... Let's not forget that SC4 gave birth to RH ... LOL
So you've seen it, too, then? I guess it's not something that's just specific to my computer. Keep an eye out for this sort of thing if you do any mid-to-large size houses with basements, or those with basements near lot edges: One prominent example which can occur is if you try boring a basement into an existing, Maxis-built house, like, say, the Pleasants: If you make it as large as possible for the existing foundation, you'll notice the warpage when you go back to the neighborhood view. Everything always looks fine while you're on the lot, but when you get out to the neighborhood, you'll see a strange warping effect occurring on the lot.
