    HELP! Can't Install Sims 2!!!

I have Windows XP w/ sp2 and cannot install Sims 2. I get to the third disk and there is a file called CatBin......I have tried taking the software back to the store 4 times and it still stopped at this CatBin file. It requested that I retry or cancel the installation. HELP! PLEASE ANYBODY!!!

I've seen this with other games but not the Sims sorry... I have the DVD version so that helps I suppose. Umm... try browsing the CD and locating this file... I have had to copy the entire contents of a CD to HDD and install from there cos of some screwy files ( Neverwinter Nights ). That worked for me, but I seem to remember it asked for the path of each new CD, rather than the EA way of 'insert CD3'...

No... sorry I don't think I can help there.

Yeah, you gotta love how the modern installer program has gotten so ludicrously and unnecessarily complex that they can botch something as simple as copying a file. I had problems with DirectX whining about this for ages, always saying it couldn't copy the file, and I'd be like, "WHY THE HELL NOT? I CAN COPY THE FILE JUST FINE, SEE?!?"

I really, really, loathe this modern installer nonsense. Why is this even necessary? Why can't we just go back to the days where files could be copied manually, or there'd be an included .BAT file that would basically do the exact same thing for you? If it ain't broke, DON'T FIX IT.

Firstly: try disabling DMA Mode on the drive. To do so:

    1. Open Device Manager by Control Panel > System > Hardware tab > Device Manager.
    2. Expand IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and open Secondary IDE Channel.
    3. Under Advanced Settings, set both Transfer Modes to PIO Only.
    4. Ok and close everything, then try installing the game again. Note that with DMA disabled, installation will go MUCH slower. If it still doesn't work, reenable DMA Mode.

If that doesn't work, and you're desperate enough, you could try raw imaging the CD with an image recorder (Nero, Alcohol 120%, etc.) onto your hard drive and mounting the image to a virtual drive using Daemon Tools (www.daemon-tools.cc) or Alcohol 120% (www.alcohol-soft.com), then installing the game from there.

    Problems installing Sims 2 ?

There is a possible problem with DLL file corruption that prevents Sims 2 installing.Try running System File Checker by clicking Run then typing
sfc /scannow and clicking OK.You might be asked for the Windows installation
disk at some point. When sfc has finished try installing again.

    Hope this helps!
