University Expansion Madness

Well Havent posted in awile until i got my hands on this new expansion pack
been a great fan of this game since it first batch of sims hit the shelves
i am really having alot problems with this sims expansion and my system is pretty much up to average spec i am running a xp 2 gig Amd chip and 512 DDr with
a 256 ati monster video card with a 80 gig with enough space to park a limo in
the sims 2 game smokes until i drop this expansion crap in ..oops did i say that ..anyway i thought it was my system but it checked out fine ..i am kinda iffy about this University pack update .. also i ran into some long load times
to ..i mean xp is already a hog itself ..and yes i updated my drivers and backed
up my files i dont know what the heck to do about getting this exspansion up and running ..everytime i install it the game just freezes ..you can pan click like its on everything works but them moving ..i almost drove to redwood city and address this in person since i am close by , Anyway any suggestions is welcome
on getting both games up and running ..

 

Hmm. I have found that the game loads slightly faster since installing S2U. The game also seems to run slightly more smoothly ... though I could be wrong about that. I had big problems to start off with. This surprised me. I renamed the downloads folder (My Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2\Downloads) as per my own advice and created a new empty folder and named it Downloads. Clicking my desktop shortcut to "TS2 Downloads" took me to the new empty folder ... Windows is such a simpleton! Cos the game treated the files in My Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2\Downloads_Back as downloads. I had to physically remove the folder to the desktop before the game ran properly (the main problem being that moving a new sim (Jimmy Phoenix) into a dorm resulted in almost instant death due to rocket-speed needs depletion ... after my third go the game asked my if I was intent on just killing sims?

OK ... that's the general discussion bit. Eastbay! You need to try a couple of things before going nuts. (Forgive me for stating the obvious if you gave already tried these but as you haven't told us what you have done so far ...)

1. First utterly remove the contents of the folder C:\Documents and Settings\User_Name\My Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2\Downloads (I explained above how I did it! )
2. 512MB ram. May be up to minimum system requirements but it really is a minumum. Try upgrading to 1GB or optimising your page file virtual memory (clicky) ... or both ... the jury is out on that, I think.
3. Sort of secondary to the above if the game is running but choppily you might need to reduce the detail levels in the graphics settings within the game.
4. If that doesn't work and the game worked perfectly before installing S2U you will need to very carefully check for updated drivers before uninstalling the core game and then reinstalling everything from scratch)

There is no good reason for expansion packs not to work on a system that previously worked well

 

I am gonna to do a complete install ..and see what happens ..heck i got my files backed up ..but i think i got enough hacks in those files to kill a horse lol "
our il have to play the file game with windows ..and your right about windows scanning the drive ..and xp is a big hungry hog ..i got a windows 2000 pro set up in another computer ..and the games smoke on them ..at 1.8 gig anyway il try re installing see what happens ..

 

hacks is the operative word... seems a lot of people are having trouble loading U if they have operational hacks already.

 

So its advised to move the documents folder elsewhere when installing the EP?...Can I just move it to my desktop and move it back and everything will be fine? Cuz I do not want to lose any downloads..I have spent too much time getting them..but I do know that I do not have any hacks...

 

Well this expansion pack is really pissin me off ..all this extra effort to get this program installed i tell ya ..all my little goodies in sims 2 must go and i am gonna have to do a fresh install because some where in there is a corupt file causing a lock up our freeze ..geeze what a complete nightmare i got it up and running but i still got a freeze lock up screen ..i almost did a frisbe throw with this new add on ..so the only way this darn expansion crap will work is i have to re insert
my downloads what a mess also i am thinking there is some conflicts with the update patch to .. for a newbie i feel sorry for them ..there is trouble big time
but i wont stop til i fix this problem but you beter beleive i am gonna let the folks in redwood city know about this waste of time install ..i can imagine once you get a few more packs install after have a ton of hacks in ..your in trouble
anyway i am back on the case of install again ...what a mess !!!

I bought and installed the game the today and thought the same as you Mirelly. Overall I'm very impressed, I haven't had any problems *touches anything that is wood, was once wood, looks like it could be wood*.
However, I'm craving the paintings to increase my Sims' moods. Grargh I hate having to play the game properly. :devious:

My game is also running faster with the EP installed. MUCH faster actually. The only time it seems to take awhile is the very first time I load a community lot or family.

And I still have the painting to increase the mood. Can't seem to live without it anymore

 

Thanks angelyne good heads up on that ..i thought i was seeing ghost with my system ..and i am a tech ok ...lol" I thought i was the only lone ranger with a problem like this ..anyway i backed my files up in case i want to just play the way i have been before ..geeze i was on a roll ok ..i had enough hacks and floors and stuff to make a donkey break dance in this game ..it would really be cool if we could just play fluid with what we had ..grrrr " Oh well the next maxi confrence you bet il be there ..he he he ..hey josh i can drive to the comapany in hour ok ...he he he ..I almost did it after this crap when i had some trouble with sims 2 maybe i should call some buddies over at oracle ...ha ha ha ha :bunny:

 

Well i finally i got this exspansion pack up and running good greif , as for the verdict i have to say it's pretty good and yes it does give the game some pep
but with all the hacks in the TS2 and minus the guitar and extra little goodies
in the EP i am startin to love what i had ..at first i had full blown lots smokin
with loads of fun playing the genetic play of the game what a blast ..somebody will figure out a way to getting this Ep to mesh with TS2 , But for me i love my sims 2 , Maybe after all the exspansion packs hit in full volume it might be worth it like the first generation game was :bunny:

 

I have to agree with you to some extent, eastbay. I am rather miffed with Maxis practically redesigning the game's core architecture for the EP. I also realise that if they had left an unfilled gap between teen and adult that the modders in the communtiy wouldn't have needed to be genii to guess that something like a university EP was in the offing ... but surely there was a way around that problem without resorting to a strategy that -- it looks like -- forces the modders to start over. I sincerely hope that this won't be a feature of subsequent EPs ... it might put off a lot of people.

I think it's not so much that your youst to the hot mods and hacks we all became to love ..but its the familys and the sims we created around the mods and the hacks ..so i was thinking ? Why dont i just upload my familes and sims minus the hacks and stuff to my sims page on the web ok then il just down load them anytime i want that way all you got to do is find a hack free home and experiance the high level game play with each expansion than hiding files re naming files which sometimes can be a complete nightmare , this way your game experaince with your sims is always there no matter what ...we all know we sometimes erase files on mistake also with these new EP coming you dont know what 's gonna happen with your game play because alot of people are so youst to the custom content around there sims ..which from a market standpoint i can understand ..keep the folks hungry for more sims Ep , I mean having some new extra game play is a blast and it would be even more a treat if you didnt have to re structure your game everytime so i thought this idea could help since most of us got so youst to our sims in the TS2 game at least this way you know who is who specaily the kids and familys in a new enviorment :bunny:

 

I noticed my first glitch in the game today:
One of my Sims had graduated with his Maths Degree, so I selected "Move Back to PleasantView" on the phone, and had him dial the number etc etc. The problem was that he'd blurt out his Simlish banter, put the phone down and then nothing would happen. He would, after a time, then lose the capability to interact with objects and finally just stood in one place doing nothing.
I managed to fix the problem by going to the College main screen, moving him out of his rented house and then moving him back in again, which seemed to have "reset" him so to speak and has since allowed him to move back to PleasantView.

Everything was going so well; I'm a bit disappointed that this happened. The reasons for it happening could only be a bug in the game or me re-introducing one of the painting hacks into the game. However, I placed the painting back into the game yesterday, and witnessed a Sim graduate and move back home, so I don't see how the problem could be specific to particular Sims.

I just have to hope it doesn't happen again.

 

Pssh. You don't have to be a genius to have guessed this would happen. In fact, I was predicting exactly such a move from the very beginning. Haven't I been telling you people all along that Maxis is EVIL and out to DESTROY US ALL?

 

I don't think they want US destroyed, just want all our money!!

 

They want to take all of your money, and then destroy you, of course. That way they have everything, and you have nothing.
