    Whats the difference ??

Would there be any difference between these ?

THE SIMS 2 (DVD VERSION) - EA Games

THE SIMS 2 - EA Games

I found a website which did them. I am after a version as cheap as possible and the dvd version ins 17.95 and the other version is 32.95 How come there is such a price difference ??

Also while i am posting do you guys think that:

    AMD Athlon 64 3000+
    512 RAM
    GeForce FX 5200

would be good enough specs to run The Sims 2 on sort of high settings ??

Unfortunately, the FX 5200 isn't that great of a card. As for the difference between the DVD and CD versions, there are none. They both contain the same game, with the same objects. The difference is in the media. :)

Ok thanx. I already knew that the FX 5200 isnt that great but what settings do you think it is runable in ?

Will there be lots of jagged edges and things on the characters ?

The 5200 isn't a terrible card, just not great. Let the game choose the optimum settings and then tweak them to suit your personal preferences. Also you didn't say how much video memory you have. If you have the bumber 256MB version you should get better performance that with the lesser spec cards. The big performance challengers are reflections, transparency and the gaseous effects. The most demanding graphic challenge though is the movie making facility. I tried setting 256MB 5600 to the largest and best quality movie setting and finally found its only real weakness :p

Before you go out and purchase the game, please make sure your comp has a DVD ROM in it, the Sims 2 DVD will only work on a DVD rom player, where as the other will go into your normal, every day CD rom. Other ppl have made that mistake before and then wondered why it wouldn't work....

Do you have a very powerful CPU? :)

I suppose that depends on what you consider powerful. I know of the Intel Pentium clock speeds, but have no idea how an Athlon 64 3000+ would be.

Hey again Whalley, I'm running Sims 2 on an AMD 2500 (with the processor running at 1.8 Ghz, the 3000 runs at around 2 Ghz) and it works just fine, I put a 128 MB FX 5200 into my sisters comp and while the graphics aren't great, they are far better than an integrated chip so she was pleased with the result. If there is anything to upgrade it would be your RAM, but at present your machine meets all the required specs to run the Sims 2.

And now knowing that you do have a DVD ROM, then I definitely recommend getting that one as it is only 1 disc while the CD version is 4, making installing time much quicker with the DVD.

:) HI Whaley. Great that it's coming! :) In a few days you will be just as addicted as the rest of us. ;)

I have the DVD and see no big diffrence in it except while installing I don't have to keep changing disks. :)

My computer is 2 /2 years old. Before we upgraded, I was running TS2 on a nVidia GeForce 440. I couldn't run the cinematcis, I had to run on lower settings like no reflections and such, and I had to be careful using the "MaxNumOfVisitingSims" cheat because it would slow my game up so. And with my settings low, I could only have 3 sims at a party or community lot. We upgraded for just over $100 to a GeForce 5500, one set to just above yours, and my game looks beautiful, can run the cinematics, and now I have to fight off the townies with a stick at community lots! LOL So I think that with your 5200 you will be ok as far as graphics are concerned. Oh, I don't think you'll be at optimal levels, but it will still look good and be playable. :)

    Sims have reflections?!!!

Yep. Why, did you think they were vampires? LOL Just kidding. Check your graphic options and see if it will allow you to turn the reflections on. When the game 1st installs it sets it's default graphic options according to what it thinks your game will work the best with on your computer. Sometimes the options are available but it will make your game a little laggy, like reflections. Sometimes they are "grayed out" like my cinematics were. But as poor as that old graphics card was, I could still get the reflections okay after I turned them on.

Yes, that's exactly what I said when my daughter asked why they had no reflections. I told her they were vampires. LOL

I just thought they didn't have them. I only just got the pixellated modesty blockers. I used to get a solid block of color ... helps to have a faster hard drive. But even with it I don't have reflections.

Not sure it's worth it if they'll slow my game down. Not really a big deal. I was just surprised, is all. And not by witches this time. :D
