Of course, J.M. Fish would come to make a snide comment. I was shocked too when I found out how much my brother has to pay every month for it, and how often the servers are down. I was able to play TS2 for almost 5 hours straight because WoW wouldn't be working until 5 pm the other day.
I justified getting WoW and paying the monthly fee b/c well...other sources of entertainment would be just as much, if not more. The servers are down for maintenence every Tuesday. There are random server shutdowns. W/e. I have a life, I can live with stuff like that. I can simply walk away or play Sims 2. WoW's just my cup of tea at the moment, along with Sims 2 Uni. I can always opt to not pay for it anymore when I get tired of it. For some reason I can always find something to do in Sims. So w/e.
