however many you want... there is a cheat in the game that will allow you to set the max allowed... type help into the cheat console to find the cheat.
Without the cheat, 3 plus a basement seems to be the max for a playable house. If you build a giant house, you need a good processor and video card or else your sims will move slower than molassas. :(
