Using objects from "residential" in "commercial" spaces

I just created an awesome observatory for my Sims (sims 2) thinking I could use a couple of the high-powered telescopes on the roof deck. Only they don't show up in the menu of objects (although so much does) when I'm creating a commercial lot.

Also - I created an art museum which is kind of cool, but I would like to use some little "real" art (monet, vermeer, etc) - I can create them in photoshop, but how do I get them into the game.

And finally (and I appreciate everyone's patience and help) - I want to create a "art gallery row" for my sims to visit (one large lot, multiple buildings). Is there a way to get the art my sims create into a space like this - one of my sims is really doing some great work.

Do you have nightlife? If so, you can place the artwork he/she made into their inventory and go to that lot. You should be able to access their inventory when in the museum then and place their artwork on the walls there. Hope that helps! Same thing could be done with the telescope, if you have a rich sim who wants to donate a telescope! ;)

Alas, I don't have Nightlife - only Sims 2 - but thank you.

I was poking around the object files of the game - but of course filenames are indeciferable. I was thinking I could transfer the object (or objects) into the relevant folders and then open the program and access it that way.

Does anyone think this will work? Any other ideas?

You can change a lot's designation by using a zoning cheat if you have University.

Load up the community lot and ctrl + shift + c and type:-
    changelotzoning residential
You have to save the lot to fix the change. Reload the lot and now will be able to buy residential items because it is a residential lot.

When you have finished don't forget to turn it back into a community lot with:-
    changelotzoning community

Note the cheat only works on games with University installed.

Sims cannot gain skills on community lots unless you have a little hack that permits it to happen. Try searching the web for sims community skilling

Pescado has a suitable hack at moreawesomethanyou.com

    I don't wanna be a smart-arse ... but

You just save and exit the game the instant you have pressed the C key to capture the scene you (don't) want for a portrait/still life (in other words you have the sim of your choice go to paint a still life and when you get the framing option to choose your view just press C and save and exit.

    Now open My Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2\Storytelling

Find the pics called Screenshot.bmp and Snapshot.bmp and replace them with the image you want your sim to "paint". (remember only the middle of the image will be painted  )

NB The game only uses one of the above pics but I don't remember offhand which one, replacing both will ensure a result. Of course if you were too slow in saving and the sim has already started the pic ... ;)
