No, just the parent. I accidentally fed a baby red milk one time. She didn't learn much but was otherwise unharmed. I don't think the game lets you hurt the kids. I can't even get mine to fight with each other. We all should have this problem.

Depends on if you count the elixir of life as a "cheat." I've done it, with help from the green stuff. Six kids the hard way, four by adoption, in the same family. Look in your User Profile for the avatar options. I think you need to have a certain number of posts before you can have a custom avatar but I could be wrong.
